Way back in June of 2014- that was the last time Tom Townsend sold a winning 50/50 ticket. His long dry

spell couldn't have ended better for Terry Doll. Her September drawing ticket was worth $409.00, and Tom earned the well deserved $50 seller incentive. It won't be long before 2016 annuals will ready for purchase. Right now, we have sold 262 annual tickets. The cost for (1) annual is now only $3.00. One annual will guarantee you (1) chance for each of the remaining months of 2015. They are a great gift for the hard-to-buy-for person. If you have purchased an annual, but don't know what you're lucky yearly number is and would like to know. Just stop by the 50/50 table and I will be more than happy to take the time to look up your number.

Fr. Brian’s Blarney Rummage Sale

Many Thanks and congratulations to Carol Fuelling and all of the volunteers on the

success of the Rummage Sale. They raised over $14,000 by their hard work. There were

a number of estates that donated their goods to this rummage sale. The waves of estate

sale donations came in the summer leading up to the rummage sale, so there was plenty

of good furniture, clothes, toys, and all the good stuff found in the Man and Woman

caves.

Tom Townsend also referred a veterans’ association to Carol, so she had the extra

furniture and housewares set aside for them to pick up on Friday. Many of our veterans

go without (we are helping to furnish some apartments for these veterans with the

donations to the sale). Kudos to Tom for the referral and to Carol and the volunteers for

helping our veterans out.

Prayers After Mass

In light of the escalation by Russia and China in the Middle East against ISIS, we are

going to pray the prayers that used to be said in the Old Rite at the end of Low Mass.

The Worship Commission was looking into adding something like this to combat the

talking in church after Mass has let out.

This issue seems to be working itself out, because Eric Hite plays an organ fanfare of

some sort after the final hymn, which was traditional to the Catholic Church until

recently. I noticed this practice in the churches in Europe while in the seminary on our

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Rome. Those who did not want to stay would quietly

walk out of church after the hymn. Those who did stay would sit quietly and listen or

pray, making their Thanksgiving to God for Holy Communion. Then, they would walk

out quietly and gather outside or in the narthex/gathering space after Mass to socialize

and for fellowship.

Fr. Jacob Gordon had me cover a Sunday High Mass at St. Joseph Downtown Toledo

for him a few weeks ago. At the end of Mass, the servers were inviting me to come back

to the front of the altar to lead some prayers after the final hymn was over. I didn’t know

what they were doing and I was in a rush to get back here, so I couldn’t lead the prayers.

While driving back to St. Anthony to cantor at the 11am Mass, the thought occurred to

me that we could adopt this practice.

Come to find out, Dcn. Trevor taught the servers this practice at St. Joseph before he

was ordained and was their lead server. He said the prayers that were said after Low

Mass in the Extraordinary Form were the ones used. However, instead of saying the

prayers immediately after the final blessing at the foot of the altar, they would process out

and back to the sacristy. (The Benedictine Monks in Chicago would process out after

Mass and back to the sacristy, where they would immediately begin the prayers). Once

the hymn and organ fanfare were completed, they would then gather at the foot of the

altar and kneel down to begin the prayers. The laity who stayed knelt down as well and

joined the priest/lead in prayer.

The prayers (said in English) are: The Hail Mary (said 3 times), the Hail Holy Queen, a

prayer said by the priest/leader, the Saint Michael the Archangel prayer, and conclude

with the priest/leader saying three times “Most Sacred Heart of Jesus” with the response:

“Have mercy on us.”

Since I have offered Low Mass in Latin on some Saturdays, we have already said these

prayers at the end of Mass (after the Prologue of St. John’s Gospel is read). With the

escalation of Russia’s activity in the Middle East (bombing ISIS in Syria), I invited those

present at Mass on Thursday to pray these prayers for the intention of the Holy Father, for

peace in the Middle East, for the conversion of Russia, and for our own intentions. At the

Mass in Latin and Mass in English, most (if not all) of the congregants stayed to pray

these prayers. Some stayed in church to make their Thanksgiving, while some gathered

afterwards in the Narthex. Those who stayed for prayer in church then gathered

afterwards in the Narthex.

We will try this out after the weekday Masses to get familiar with the prayers. I would

like to implement this for Sunday Mass beginning in November, so that we can also pray

for the Repose of the Souls of our Beloved Dead. We can add that intention to the list I

described above and possibly add a specific prayer for them as well.

Continued on the reverse…………..

The Power of Prayer Someone has said that if Christians

really understood the full extent of the

power we have available through prayer,

we might be speechless.

During WWII there was an advisor to

Churchill who organized a group of

people who dropped what they were

doing every day at a prescribed hour for

one minute to collectively pray for the

safety of England, its people and peace.

There is now a group of people

organizing the same thing here in

America. If you would like to

participate: every evening at 9:00pm

Easter Time (8:00pm Central, 7:00pm

Mountain, 6:00pm Pacific), stop

whatever you are doing and spend one

minute praying for the safety of the

United Sates and for a return to a Godly

nation. If you know anyone else who

would like to participate, please pass this

along.

Our prayers are the most powerful

asset we have.

God Bless America!!

Guardian Angels: 7 Interesting Facts

by Dr Taylor Marshall

http://taylormarshall.com/2013/10/guardian-angels-7-interesting-facts.html

Friday was the feast of the Guardian Angels. Your Guardian Angel has been with you

since you were conceived in your mother’s womb. We should always revere these

angelic beings and even ask their prayers.

7 Interesting Facts about Guardian Angels

1. The concept of “guardian angels” is thoroughly Jewish. Moses records human

interaction with guarding angels in the Torah, and Daniel frequently mentions

the powerful role of angels as guardians (see Daniel 10 for details).

2. Christ our Lord explicitly teaches the existence of guardian angels in Matthew 18:10:

“See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that

their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”

3. The early Church Fathers also spoke of our guardian angels. St. Jerome, for example,

taught that each person (whether they are Christian or not) has a guardian angel

appointed to a person from the beginning of his existence.

4. Saint Thomas Aquinas taught that all humans have a guardian angel and that these

were chosen from the lowest hierarchy of angels.

5. Blessed John Paul II emphasized the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the ministry

of guardian angels: “Let us invoke the Queen of angels and saints, that she may

grant us, supported by our guardian angels, to be authentic witnesses to the

Lord’s paschal mystery” (Regina Caeli Audience, 1997).

6. Maria Agreda, the visionary, taught that the Blessed Virgin Mary had hundreds of

guardian angels, including St Michael and St Gabriel. I’ve heard some people

say that Catholic priests have “two guardian angels,” but I don’t know if this

tradition has any magisterial support.

7. And to raise a very controversial topic, you’re not supposed to name your Guardian

Angel. Sorry, just don’t do it. Some Catholics practice a devotion of giving

personal names to their guardian angels. However, the Holy See does not allow

this practice and formally discourages it. According to the Directory on Popular

Piety and the Liturgy, 216 (under the heading about Devotion to the Holy

Angels): “The practice of assigning names to the Holy Angels should be

discouraged, except in the cases of Gabriel, Raphael and Michael whose names

are contained in Holy Scripture.”

What’s the Theology Behind Not Naming Your Guardian Angel? We may not

name our Guardian Angel, because naming another implies authority over the

other. We see this in Sacred Scripture when God gives a new name to someone

(Abraham, Israel, Peter), He is signifying His authority over that person as He

acts as His vicegerent in His name. Notably, God revealed the names of Jesus,

Mary, and John the Baptist to their parents before they were born to show His

special authority in human redemption.

On a human level, we see this authority in the naming of our children and our

pets. We have been granted authority over them, so we have the authority to

name them. This authority to name children, also, reveals our special vocation

as parents.

However, my Guardian Angel is OVER me in authority as seen in the prayer

“Angel of God”:

“Angel of God my Guardian Dear to whom God’s love commits me here.

Ever this day be at my side to light, to guard, to RULE, to guide.”

Therefore, We do not have the authority to name our angel. Our Guardian Angel

is not our dog, he is our instructor, protector and guide. (taken and edited by Fr.

Hurley from: http://taylormarshall.com/2011/06/you-are-not-allowed-to-name-

your.html)

Prayer Team have been trained in Inner

Healing Prayer. Joined with your prayer,

they pray with you as Intercessors. They

do not give counsel but stand with you, in

prayer and in His desire to heal you.

There is no cost and no appointment is

necessary. Typically, the prayer takes

about 5-10 minutes.

Knightly News October, 2015

Dedicated to keeping you informed on the activities of the

Fr. John A. Kenna Knights of Columbus Council 11430

I’m not sure who took it away but summer is missing in action!! It is now officially the

Autumn Season. God is now showing us His great palate of colors in the trees and shrubs. The

farmers are harvesting their soybeans and the corn will soon follow. It truly is a time for reaping

and rejoicing. Also a time for us to be grateful for all the good things we have ‘reaped’ in our

own lives. We need to make it a point to give thanks to the Lord for the bountiful harvest He has

given us, each in our own way

Thanks for coming out to our first Breakfast Buffet of the fall season on Sept. 13th. We had a

good turnout and the folks seemed to be enjoying themselves. It is neat to watch the interaction

that occurs when you get a group of friendly folks together. Hope you will be able to attend the

next repast on October 11th. In case you are interested, we have decided to bring back bacon to

our meat menu. It seems to be a very popular item. We did look at our costs for all items and

decided that, for the first time in several years, we had to increase our requested donation by

$1.00. Hopefully that won’t be a deterrent to anyone wanting a delicious meal on that day.

Doors open at 8:30 AM.

We didn’t have a winner in our attendance game at the September meeting so the pot will

continue to grow. You could be the next lucky winner if you are a K-C member, attend the next

meeting and participate in the game. Why not join with your brother Knights? We meet every 1st

Wednesday at 7:30 PM in Kenna Hall.

We invite all men 18 yrs. or older who are practical Catholics to join a great bunch of guys.

Just mention your interest to any one of the officers listed below.
