The Gospel in the Gospel
Jesus is addressing the Pharisees who are outraged that the great teacher is eating and socializing with sinners. Jesus
uses three parables and responds with a new idea: God’s love is a seeking love. That’s the Good News.
Jesus brings His listeners into the experience of three stories. A lost sheep and a lost coin are not insignificant to the
one who has lost it. Jesus describes the lengths that each person goes to recover that which is lost. He emphasizes
the joy of the finding and the social nature of that joy.
In Pharisaic Law, the smallest neglect of the law or ritual practice could cause a person to be ostracized. In the
parable of the Prodigal Son, the older brother does not even call the younger man my brother. Instead he distances
himself with the reference to your son. Misguided Pharisaic teaching might say: There will be joy in heaven over
one sinner who is obliterated.
So often, we meet people who are searching for some spiritual reality to call God. Like the sheep, they wander about
risking plunges off cliffs and hungry wolves. Like the two sons, one takes off to create a world of his own and winds
up in a trough. The other doesn’t recognize that he has everything and is resentful. Jesus brings the Good News.
Our Father is always searching for us. He runs out to meet us. Every person’s salvation is our joy.
El Evangelio en el Evangelio
Jesús se está dirigiendo a los fariseos, quienes se lamentan de que el gran maestro esté comiendo y socializando con
los pecadores. Jesús usa tres parábolas y responde con una nueva idea: el amor de Dios es un amor que busca. Esa
es la buena noticia.
Jesús trae a sus oyentes a la experiencia de tres historias. Una oveja perdida y una moneda perdida no son
insignificantes para quien la ha perdido. Jesús describe las distancias que cada persona recorre para recuperar lo que
se pierde. Él enfatiza la alegría del hallazgo y la naturaleza social de esa alegría.
En la ley farisaica, el menor descuido de la ley o la práctica ritual podría causar que una persona sea condenada al
ostracismo. En la parábola del hijo pródigo, el hermano mayor ni siquiera llama al hombre más joven mi hermano.
En cambio, se distancia con la referencia a su hijo. La enseñanza farisaica equivocada podría decir: Habrá alegría
en el cielo por un pecador que sea borrado.
Muy a menudo, nos encontramos con personas que buscan alguna realidad espiritual para llamar a Dios. Al igual
que las ovejas, deambulan por el riesgo de zambullirse de los acantilados y los lobos hambrientos. Al igual que los
dos hijos, uno se separa para crear un mundo propio y termina en un comedero de cerdos. El otro no reconoce que
lo tiene todo y está resentido. Jesús trae las buenas nuevas. Nuestro Padre siempre nos está buscando. Él corre a
nuestro encuentro. La salvación de cada persona es nuestra alegría.
