F S of Advent
December 20, 2020

Dear Friends,
With heightened anticipation, we enter this last week of Advent. We will be putting up the tree at
the rectory and decorating. John Paul was keen to get an Advent wreath up as we began this jour-
ney, and we will see what we can do to enliven the surroundings a bit for the Christmas season
(which doesn’t start until Christmas and doesn’t end until February 2
nd
with the Presentation).
On the morning of December 8
th
, as I was making my coffee and getting ready to go to the chapel,
I decided to peruse the headlines of the Catholic news. I was surprised to see that the Holy Father
had called for the Year of St. Joseph. It is 150 years since he was named patron of the Universal
Church by Blessed Pope Pius IX. Pope Francis has a great love for St. Joseph and grew up in a par-
ish dedicated to him. I recommend you read the Apostolic Letter Patris Corde (With a Father’s
Heart) which Pope Francis wrote to inaugurate this year dedicated to St. Joseph. I have included
this portion from the section on St. Joseph as an Accepting Father for you to ponder in the light of
our times and as we prepare to accompany him with Our Lady to Bethlehem.

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted His only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father

The Standingwith Haiti Committee is grateful to all who contributed to our recent fundraising effort for our
SisterParish, Ste. Anne’s in Haiti, especially amidst the difficulties presented by the coronavirus pandem-
ic. As promised, in November, we conducted a drawing from among donors who contributed between Sep-
tember 1st through November 15th for six giveaway items, including gift baskets and restaurant certifi-
cates. We raised $19,470 during this period.Giveaway recipients have been contacted and the items have
been delivered. We are so grateful that we had a good number of donors to draw from for these giveaways,
and for the support of all who have contributed to and prayed for this effort over the years. Ste. Anne School
literally could not continue without the support of St. Anthony Parish! Although our special drawings are
complete, it is never too late to donate to our Sister Parish, either online, by mail, our in the collection boxes in
the church.

We plan to have another opportunity in April of 2021 to bring attention back to this important and lifegiving
mission. Until then, please keep Haiti in your prayers, and have a blessed and safe Advent and Christmas!

nations (Sunday Offering, St. Vincent
de Paul, Mortgage Reduction, etc.) on
December 28. Donations received
after the date may not be recorded on
your 2020 parish giving report due to
processing.
Please consider your parish if you
plan to make a gift in 2020.
Online Giving transactions after
December 20th
MAY NOT be recorded in 2020 due
to varying processing procedures of
banks.
Before COVID, our St.
Anthony Vincentians went
to a home visit in Renton.
The young man who an-
swered the door explained
that the two middle school
students living there were
his niece and nephew. No
mention was made of the
parents.
He explained that he had moved to a bigger
apartment to house them, was $500 behind on
his rent, was unemployed, but had two job
interviews later in the week. He was sure that
he would get one of the jobs, and after that he
would be OK. We were able to help with the
back rent, and he did not request any further
assistance.
It is so nice to be able to help people when
they hit a “bad patch”. Many of the people we
visit are doing their best. They just need a
temporary boost at the moment. You can be a
part of the support for our neighbors. To join
us, contact Judy at [email protected].
