Christ the King—St. Anthony Parish Burlington April 5, 2020

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today we remember Our Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and His suffering and death upon the cross. It is a mixture of jubilation as Jesus is cheered by the crowd and hailed as a king and then sadness and horror as a similar crowd demands His death. While we are used to gathering together to receive our palms, reflecting upon the reading of the Passion, and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, this year we will be praying together via the internet and live streaming. Regardless of whether we are together or apart, the point of it all is the same: we are meant to ponder the love of God that is poured forth in the suffering and death of Our Lord. He is the King of the Universe precisely because He accepts the cross to save us from sin and death. This will be a particularly difficult Holy Week for all of us, knowing that we will not be able to gather together to celebrate the most important events of our faith, especially Our Lord’s resurrection on Easter. Know that, as a priest, this week will be particularly difficult. The reality of not joining you in our churches to wave the palms, process the Blessed Sacrament, venerate the cross, and proclaim the Light of Christ in a darkened church saddens me beyond words. Although I will be celebrating the liturgies and praying the prayers, not to be doing so with you is something I never imagined would happen. Know that you will be in my hearts throughout this coming week, and I will ask Our Lord to protect you all from harm and that the graces of this Holy Week strengthen your faith. Finally, I invite us all to continue to pray for all those suffering because of the Covid-19 pandemic, that they receive healing. Pray for the medical personnel who are attending to the needs of the ill. Pray for the first responders who continue to put their lives at risk as they respond to this crisis. Pray for those seeking a cure and vaccine. Pray for all of our civil leaders who are trying to keep us safe and help us out of the crisis. In a word, pray, pray, pray. May Christ our Crucified Lord protect us all. Msgr. John J. McDermott, VG

GUIDELINES FOR LENT The time of Lent is to be observed by Catholics as a special season of prayer, penance, and works of charity. *Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, in particular, are the most important penitential days of the liturgical year. They are days of both fast and abstinence. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. *The rule of fasting states that only one full meal a day can be taken. Two small meals, “sufficient to maintain strength”, are allowed, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals breaks the fast, but drinking liquids does not. The rule of fasting obliges all Catholics from 18 to 59. *Abstinence refers to the eating of meat. The common estimation of the community is used to determine what falls under the category of meat. The rule of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years or older. *The substantial observance of the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious obligation. *Self-imposed fasting on the other weekdays of Lent is recommended. Abstinence on all Fridays of the year is also highly recommended. *Parents and teachers should see to it that, even those who are not bound by the laws of fast and abstinence because of age, are brought up in an atmosphere that is conducive to a sense of penance.

Parishes

Bishop Christopher J. Coyne is working with pastors, the Vermont Health Department and the CDC to ensure the

safety of the Catholic Community during these challenging times. Through prayer, the practice of recommended

preventative measures (such as staying home when sick or in contact with someone that has COVID-19), good

hygiene and common sense, we will get through this together.

Bishop Christopher J. Coyne Notices to parishes regarding the following

precautionary measures (click dates to read full notice):

Effective March 25: All Catholic churches, chapels, and shrines throughout the state are closed until further notice.

Effective March 20: All regularly scheduled public celebrations of the Catholic Mass, sacraments and devotions are suspended until further notice.

Letter March 19: Letter from Bishop Coyne to parishioners regarding the pandemic update and resources.

Notice March 18: Bishop Coyne has asked each parish and chapel to erect a shrine either inside or outside of the church to pray for deliverance from the COVID-19 outbreak. A candle will be kept burning in front of the Blessed Mother for those who have died, for those who are ill, for the doctors, nurses, and caretakers who are treating the sick, for those with suffering family members, for those who are in mourning, for those who are vulnerable, for those who are afraid, and for those leaders whose decisions impact the pandemic.

Effective March 15: All Catholic schools will be closed March 17-April 15. The situation will be monitored and adjusted as warranted.

Effective March 14: The obligation to attend Sunday Mass has been suspended for all Catholics. Mass will still be offered.

Statement March 13: Our response to the challenges of the COVID-19 virus will be guided by local, state and public health experts. So, for example, if a local school system is shut down because of the virus, any Catholic school in that district would close as well. If the state directs that no public gatherings of people should take place for the foreseeable future, then the public celebrations of the Church’s liturgy, including Mass, would be suspended. Older and elderly adults as well as Catholics from vulnerable populations are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

Effective March 11: Recommended and encouraged that the reception of Holy Communion be in the hand only. If receiving on the tongue, come to receive Holy Communion towards the end of the communion line and receive from the priest. All Holy Water removed from all fonts and fonts removed if possible.

Effective March 4: Suspension of communion from the cup, Sign of Peace and holding hands during the Our Father.
