COURSE DIRECTOR
Course Director, Symposium: Botulinum toxin for dystonia. 1994
Course Director, Update in Neuromuscular Diseases 2001, 2006
TEACHING
Overview of my Role as an Educator: 1. As the director of the EMG laboratory and the director of the clinical neurophysiology fellowship at
University of Rochester (UR) from 1993 to 1997 and at OHSU since 1999, I have trained 15 fellows in
clinical neurophysiology or EMG/neuromuscular diseases over the last 15 years.
2. As the primary electromyographer at UR and OHSU, I teach neurology residents principles and techniques
in EMG. A neurology resident rotates in my EMG lab each month.
3. I mentor junior faculty members – Dr. Lisa Silbert (NIH K23) and Dr. Tom Gregory (NIH R01).
4. I am a small group facilitator for the course “Biostatistics in Medicine” of the Principles of Clinical
Medicine (PCM) during the winter quarter, 2009 (12/2008-2/2009).

Junior Faculty mentoring
Dr. Lisa Silbert, One of our junior faculty member, finished her fellowship in dementia/clinical neurophysiology
with me. I am one of Dr. Silbert’s mentors for her NIH K23 clinical investigator award. Dr. Silbert has been
carrying out part of her research in my transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) laboratory, investigating the
pathophysiology of white matter changes in the elderly.
I also mentor Dr. Tom Gregory, an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr.
Gregory expressed his interests to me in studying the neurophysiology of pelvic floor disorders in women in 2001. I
trained him in performing neurophysiology studies of the pelvic floor and supervised him to conduct research in this
area. Dr. Gregory has subsequently published his pilot studies with me. He becomes one of the nation’s leading
experts in the neurophysiology of the pelvic floor. Dr. Gregory has run the teaching courses in this area at the
American Association of Neuromuscular diseases & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) annual meeting for the
past two years. Dr. Gregory’s RO1 grant using neurophysiology and MRI to investigate fecal incontinence in
women is funded by NIH for 5 years, and I serve as a co-investigator with 7.5 % effort.
