NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 11, 2019

CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS AND CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERI-CAN CAMPAIGN: On Sunday August 25, 2019, a second collection will be taken up to fund scholarships for Catholic students at Catholic University in Washington DC, and to support the efforts to make the voice of the

Catholic Church heard in the public forum of our country, through various media efforts. Please be generous.

From the desk of the Administrator

Perhaps an important part of our do-over is to talk about our elementary schools. Yes, that is correct to say “our” and the plural “schools”. See, the Diocese is moving into a regionalization of schools supported by all the parishes in the region. So, there will be no more “parish” schools in the future. For our area, the regionalization of schools began about three years ago with the formation of the North Hills Regional Catholic Elementary Schools (NHRCES). It is currently composed of five different schools: Blessed Francis Seelos Academy, Wexford; Blessed Trinity Academy, Glenshaw; Christ the Di-vine Teacher Catholic Academy, Aspinwall; Holy Cross Academy, Ross Township; and Saint James School, Sewickley. One additional school had been a part of our region and is now no longer. Northside Assumption Catholic Academy recently became part of the “Pittsburgh City Catholic Elementary Schools, Inc.” which is related to the Extra Mile Foundation who “helps urban children and their families meet the challenge of obtaining a values-based, quality educa-tion from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade” (accessed 7/28/2019). The Board for NHRCES was reorganized this spring due to the establishment of the parish group-ings. The Board is composed of both Priests and laypersons. I believe it’s to be a 50/50 split. Two Priests needed to be elected. I was one of the Priests elected to the Board. I am glad to serve in that capacity. In support of Catholic education, each parish is assessed a school subsidy. Traditionally, parishes without a school contribute an amount based on 10% of the parish’s adjusted income. What that really means is that for each dollar raised, an additional $0.10 must be raised to pay the subsidy. Parishes with schools were contributing at a much higher rate, sometimes up to 25% of their budget. Our subsidies for the coming year are as follows: ASP - $22,300.00; HSP - $20,300; and SAP - $15,000.00. Due to SBP having been a foundational partner to Blessed Trinity, its subsidy is quite a bit higher, $235,000.00. What all this means is that we have to work hard to support Catholic education in our region. Scholar-ships and grants are available to help send your child to a Catholic School as enrollment helps with the school budget. When there are fundraisers for our schools and region, please participate. Your contin-ued financial support of our parishes helps us to meet these subsidy obligations. Working together we can assure Catholic education for many generations to come.

See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION for 2019-2020 – new changes

For the 2019-2020 CFF year we will be offering: (1) the traditional CFF classes for children Grades 1-8, (2) Home Schooling, (3) Jr. High Nontraditional Impact Initiative OR (4) Enhanced CFF Program for Parents. Registration for CFF is now under way.

TRADITIONAL CFF CLASSES FOR GRADES 1-8: FOR GRADES 1-6 will meet Saturday mornings beginning September 7h, from 9:00-10:30 am. FOR JR. HIGH GRADES 7 & 8 will meet every Sunday evening for two 10-week semesters beginning Sept. 8th

HOME SCHOOLING: You may home school your child in Faith Formation, but it is strongly recommended that you do not home school during a sacramental year (2nd or 8th grade). Please indicate your intention to home school on the registration form.

NONTRADITIONAL OPTION FOR JR. HIGH 7 & 8 Grade ONLY – Impact Small Group Discipleship Initiative: IMPACT – a small group missionary discipleship program that focuses on the holistic development of the

whole person. Each “Impact” group will consist of 1-2 mentors and 5-8 youth. Each mentor will be like a “personal youth minister” to the youth in their “Impact” group. They will invest time in them, be there to help guide them and lis-ten to them when tough questions arise, get to know their families (Parents are welcome to host the groups for their meetings), and support them through their entire faith journey. The groups can meet weekly or every other week and at a time that works best for everyone in the group. Within these groups, you can expect your child to make friends that will last for their entire life. The groups will meet the five basic psychological/emotional things that every teenager needs to not only grow in their Catholic faith, but as people. Since each Impact Group will be different, each group will start as soon as the group is ready and the mentors feel adequately prepared to start.

THE ENHANCED CFF PROGRAM FOR PARENTS (Grades 1-8): THIS PROGRAM WILL BE OFFERED ONLY IF 20 OR MORE FAMILIES REGISTER. The day and time will be determined if enough families register. The Parents will be required to attend class about twice a month (not necessarily every other week) in the evening from 7:30 – 9:00 pm starting in September. Some classes will not take the entire time. Refreshments will be provided. Classes will fo-cus on learning basic doctrine, Christian parenting issues and discipleship. Parents will receive discussion points to take home in order to have a weekly discussion with their children about matters of faith. Students are expected to complete a brief homeschooling lesson as well. Families with children in 2nd and 8th First Communion and Confirma-tion grades will have additional requirements. In order to receive credit parents will not be able to miss more than 3 of the classes without making them up, be present for at least an hour and fifteen minutes, and commit to attending Mass on Sundays with their children. Parents must complete a registration form.

Every child attending CFF will need to register even if they attended last year.
