Trunk or Treat (Sunday, October 25)

Don’t forget this evening’s Trunk or Treat, which is being hosted by St. Barnabas Catholic School from 6:00 to 8:00pm – please bring your children or grandchildren! Games, concessions, and activities will take place in the school gym and Trunk or Treat in the parking lot. Admission is one canned good per person. Be sure your costumes are “family friendly”, not scary – it is wholly inappropriate for children to dress up as monsters, zombies, vampires, grim reapers, mummies, devils, or anything else having to do with death, horror, or the occult.

All Souls Envelopes – MASS NOVENA

Please write the names of your beloved deceased for remembrance during the month of November on the All Souls envelopes (in your box of envelopes or in the pews – enclose an additional sheet if more space is needed). It is customary, for those who are able, to enclose a donation for the church as well. The envelopes will be placed before the altar.

Our annual NOVENA OF MASSES for those whose names you list will be celebrated by Father Jerabek from November 2 to 10, so be sure to turn in your names by next Sunday, November 1 so that they are included.

May all of our beloved dead and all of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace!

NEW! Fall Back – Next Saturday Night!

On Sunday, November 1 we will “fall back” to Central Standard Time. Be sure to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed next Saturday night!

Tailgate Party

The Knights of Columbus Ladies’ Auxiliary is sponsoring a Tailgate Party to be held on Sunday, November 15 in the school gym immediately following the 10:00am Mass. Admission is one canned good per person attending, to benefit the parish’s Food Pantry. Please bring your favorite covered dish or “tailgate” dish (one per family). We will be having a “drop in the bucket” raffle. Buying a raffle ticket will enter you to win half the sale of the tickets. Come and enjoy fellowship and fun with your Parish Family!

NEW! Alabama Awakening II

The Alabama Awakening II Student Retreat will be the weekend of November 13-15 at the Springville Retreat Center. Awakening retreats have been changing lives and challenging students to engage in their faith at campuses all over the country. At an Awakening students grow closer to Christ, closer to his Church, and develop deep bonds of friendship. If you are a college student, you need to experience this retreat! If you are the parent of a college student, you need to let them know about this retreat! For more info or to register, go to http://www.alabamaawakening.org. The cost is $45 for the entire weekend. Parish scholarships are available (ask Father Jerabek). Space is limited, so sign up sooner rather than later!

NEW! Now Hiring – St. Rose Academy

St. Rose Academy, a private, Catholic elementary school is seeking a full-time Director of Institutional Advancement beginning in January 2016. Candidates must have a marketing or communications degree and previous experience with fundraising. Experience using Raiser’s Edge database preferable. NEW! Welcome Back, Father José Luis

Father José Luis Guevara has been assigned by Bishop Baker to be in-residence at St. Barnabas, with responsibilities for the Hispanic Community at Prince of Peace Church in Hoover and also to assist Father Jerabek with the Hispanic Community at nearby Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He will celebrate occasional other Masses at St. Barnabas during his time here so that he can continue to practice English. Father José Luis will be with us until June 30, 2016. A warm “welcome back”!

NEW! Open House

St. Bernard Prep School in Cullman will host an Open House on Sunday, November 1 at 2:00pm. Families will have an opportunity to visit the school and talk with teachers, students, and monks about the school’s educational opportunities. St. Bernard Prep offers a college preparatory curriculum for students in grades 7-12. For more information, visit http://www.stbernardprep.com or call 256-739-6682.

NEW! Oyster Supper

Everyone is invited to an Oyster Supper on Friday, November 6 from 4:00 to 8:00pm at East Lake United Methodist Church. Fried oysters or chicken fingers, coleslaw, baked potato, hush puppies, dessert, and drink will be offered for $10.00/plate. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. For more info, please call E. Lake United Methodist at 205-836-3201.

NEW! College/University Care Packages

Again this year we have sent care packages to the known college and university students of the parish (we hope we haven’t missed anyone). Items were included to nourish body and soul. Remember to pray for our students!

NEW! Inmate Correspondence

An inmate at St. Clair Correctional Facility has been in touch with the parish for some time (he had become friends with Father Wrigley), and he would like to have a pen pal. If you might be interested in corresponding with him, call Alice in the church office for more information.

NEW! Winter Coats Needed for Holy Rosary

As the weather cools down it’s time to start thinking about the children in Gate City who might not have sufficiently warm outerwear this year. It’s a great opportunity to donate out-grown items from children and grandchildren (ask your neighbors and coworkers also!). If you have an item to give, please tell Father Jerabek.

NEW! Next Pastoral Council Meeting

The next meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 2. If you have any concerns or suggestions, let one of the members or Fr. Jerabek know. Members are: Debra Burse, James Jacobson, Anne Lorino, David Renda, Jerry Romano, and Bev Sullivan.

CATHOLIC VOCABULARY

This Week’s Term: RUBRICS

The word “rubrics” comes from the Latin word for “red” (ruber) and refers to the words printed in red ink in the Church’s liturgical books. The rubrics are the instructions for how Mass or other rituals are to be celebrated. Sometimes they say exactly what must be done and sometimes they simply indicate general directives or a range of options. Whatever the case may be, the priest or other minister is supposed to “say the black and do the red”, i.e., recite (or sing) what is written in black ink and do what is indicated in red ink. The Church teaches that the faithful have the right to ceremonies celebrated properly according to the rubrics.
