A Note From Fr. Derek

During the month of October, the Church invites us put a particular emphasis on two things: fostering a greater de-votion to the Blessed Virgin Mary through the praying of the rosary, and praying more fervently for the protection of life in all of its stages. October 7th is the Memorial of Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. This memorial commemorates the naval victory of the Christian Holy League against the Ottoman Turks in the year 1571, stopping the spread of the Ottoman Empire into Europe. Ahead of the battel, Pope Pius V encouraged Christians to seek Mary’s intercession through praying the rosary. The Christian victory was attributed to Mary’s intercession. We must remember that the rosary remains a very powerful weapon in the spiritual battles that we all experience today. To seek the prayers of the Mother of God in our needs and in our daily struggles is a noble and prudent act.

October is also observed as Respect Life Month. This is not to say that we don’t respect life at other times, but dur-ing this month we highlight the importance of respecting life in all its stages. The shooting in Las Vegas this past week is a stark reminder of how fragile human life is, and how the gift of life can be disrespected. A few years ago, a bill to legalize physician-assisted suicide in Massachusetts was narrowly defeated. Those in favor of that bill are seeking to bring it back. I do not have the space here to go into a lot of detail, but it is important for us to remember that, apart from some practical considerations about such a bill, we must remember that God is the author of all life, and it is not for us to determine when our lives end. More resources about physician-assisted suicide can be found at http://macatholic.org/physicianassistedsuicide. Of course we cannot defend life at its end if we do not also defend life at its very beginning - the moment of conception. Let us remember to pray in a special way this month for a greater respect of life in the womb. We will be having Holy Hour on October 17th at 7:00 PM to pray for the respect of life in all its stages.

By making donations on the web sites of two different Catholic aid agencies, you can help those who have been. Catholic Charities is providing an opportunity to help victims in the United States through their website www.catholiccharitiesusa.org. AMY’S BOOK CLUB

The next meeting of our book club will be on Monday, October 30 at 12: 30 pm in the O’Brien room in the Recto-

ry. (no stairs required—just come in through the garage)

The book we have chosen is MY NAME IS LUCY BARTON by Elizabeth Stout. Ms. Stout, born in 1956 in Port-

land Maine, recognized for her previous books, is also a Pulitzer Prize winner. We look forward to this reading.

All are welcome!!! Please join us in our enthusiastic discussion. Bring other books that you have enjoyed reading

and believe that others might enjoy as well. New books and authors are fun to discover.

Questions: Contact Kathy Reilly 781-444-0862 email: [email protected]

PS Our last reading was THE AMERICAN SPIRIT by David McCullough. Agreed that any of Mr. McCullough’s

books are well worth the read, this one is special. This small book is a gathering of some of the many speeches he

has given to universities, graduations Congress, etc. in the last 10 years or so. Each speech is fascinating with the

information that he has researched applicable to where he is and what the message is that he wishes to deliv-

er. You will learn things that will make you smile and enjoy history, a subject he delivers which you don’t even real-

ize that he is delivering. Ever American should read this book!

PPS If autism is a fact of life in your family or friends and a subject that you wish to know about in more detail, a

book worth reading is TO SIRI WITH LOVE by Judith Newman. Ms. Newman, a writer by profession, gave birth to

twin boys, one with autism and one without. They are now in their teens.

Eucharistic Holy Hour to Pray for Respect of Life

Memorial Candles for All Souls’ Day

This year, for the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed on November 2nd, there will be the opportunity to purchase a memorial candle for one of your beloved deceased. The candles are the white, 6-day, glass-encased candles that typically burn as sanctuary lamps beside the tabernacle. These candles will be labeled with the name of your loved one and be lit in the church on November 2nd, as well as during the Sunday Mass-es on the weekend of November 4th and 5th. After November 5th, the candles may be taken home or you may choose to leave it at the church where it will be used during the year as a sanctuary lamp beside the tabernacle. Gold Candle Envelopes (to be distinguished from regular All Souls’ Envelopes) will be available to request these memorial candles. Please fill out the envelope, enclose your donation and return it to the church either in the offertory basket or to the office. Donations for the candles are $10. STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE

Sharing: Time Talent Treasure

“I CAN’T REMEMBER”

Few things in life are as annoying and frustrating as the number of times in a day we go into our heads trying to

come up with a word or name and we just can’t remember it, now when we want it. It obviously seems to attack

us more often the older we get. And yet in the fury of the day, more and more younger people are saying the

same thing. Why? Science says repeatedly that everything that we have learned and processed in life is up

there. But accessing this information, especially at the moment that you want it, can be very frustrating and em-

barrassing, when we can’t come up with the word or name. The brain, we are told, is like a muscle. The more

you use it, the stronger it becomes. And yet very active people still seem to have the problem as well. Cross-

word puzzles? Learning a new language? Travel? Reading? And many more are suggestions for memory im-

provement. Memory also strongly requires good health. There are many diseases and medicines that flirt with

our abilities to remember and some, unfortunately, attack this process with disastrous results.

How many telephone numbers did we used to know? Who uses a telephone book anymore? How often did we

have to search for directions to places that we have gone before? Or did we just remember how we got

there? Did we make shopping lists or did we remember just what we needed? Much of what we did remember

was because we did not have instantaneous electronic instruments in hand that will provide us with any and all

info that we could possibly want or need and more than we will ever access in our life time. We know that we do

not have to remember. We can get the info that we want in a moment when we just let our fingers do the walk-

ing.

And how frustrating is it when an hour or hours later the word/name comes flying back into our thoughts. And,

yes, the situation is over and gone is the person that we wanted to address. This is life and so it goes. Loss of

concentration, health problems, age, electronic, whatever the reason, we all suffer the same irritations. Would it

not be wonderful if we all wore name tags again, just like in kindergarten?

One of the most wonderful thoughts to have, even with memory confusion, is that our God NEVER forgets who

we are and what is buried in our minds and hearts, even if we cannot access these things at the moment. He

knows even if we don’t. So in our thoughts and prayers, let us pray:

Father, You know who is in my heart

Even if I cannot get them into my head.

So, please, Father, remember them all in Your thoughts and prayers.

Help them in Your mercy and love and me too, Father. Amen.

G.I.F.T. Growing in Faith Together

Many years ago Sister Julie started a Prayer Group, G.I.F.T., because she knew of the necessity and power of

prayer. So a small group began meeting on Wednesday mornings for an hour to pray together for each other

and for any others who needed a prayer and for the world, so much in need of prayer. This group has contin-

ued for years but is now in trouble. Due to all the circumstances of life—sickness, age, moving changes, death,

etc.- our little group is very little. And so we send out a plea for others to join us in this special mission—a mis-

sion to pray to God for just one hour a week. Prayer together is a very special kind of prayer. And one in which

we hope and pray that others will join us in taking up this very small cross. The world needs prayer. We need

prayer. It is not something that ‘I will get to eventually in my life.’ Christ has asked all of His children to pray to

His Father and not just when it might be convenient at some point in our lives. It will be a very sad day, if our

Prayer group has to come to an end because of disinterest.
