APPENDIX B: BACKGROUND INFORMATION - The College and School of Medicine & Dentistry

Queen Mary, University of London and Barts & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry

www.smd.qmul.ac.uk

THE INSTITUTE OF DENTISTRY

The Institute of Dentistry is one of the School’s five research institutes, and comprises the following:

Centre for Adult Oral Health (Centre Lead – Dr Wendy Turner) Centre for Clinical & Diagnostic Oral Sciences (Centre Lead – Prof. Farida Fortune) Centre for Oral Growth and Development (Centre Lead – Prof. Ferranti Wong) Centre for Dental Care Professionals (Centre Lead – Ms Sarah Murray) Centre for Oral Clinical Research (Centre Lead – Professor Nikos Donos)

Each Centre has an administrative head (Centre Lead), reporting to the Dental Dean/Director of the Institute, Prof. Mike Curtis, who is supported by the General Manager for the Institute, Jo Kirner. The Institute is the primary unit of resource management and planning is done from an Institute perspective. Policy is discussed and developed by the Institute’s Executive Board, which meets monthly, comprising lead members of each Centre, staff with key functional responsibilities, together with the Institute’s General Manager.

Centre for Adult Oral health

This centre is the academic home of the clinical restorative dental specialties (including prosthodontics, endodontics and periodontology) within the institute of dentistry. The centre's broad range of activities include the responsibility for undergraduate and postgraduate education in these subjects, together with a range of research groupings and the provision of clinical restorative dental care in conjunction with the restorative unit within the dental teaching hospital of Barts Health NHS trust.   The centre has major internationally recognised research interests in behavioural and psychosocial factors in oral disease; cellular and molecular biology of bone and periodontal tissues; genetic and other risk factors in periodontal disease including diabetes and smoking; and in the application of computerised biometric systems for the measurement of problems in Restorative Dentistry. Currently the centre collaborates extensively with other disciplines within QMUL e.g.with dental physical sciences in the development of novel materials and techniques for the treatment of chronic dental diseases such as caries, periodontal disease and dentine hypersensitivity. There is collaboration with other departments within QMUL e.g. the school of engineering and materials science, as well as external collaboration with other universities in the UK and internationally. There is increasing collaboration of the centre with other disciples within QMUL in a multidisciplinary approach to major health problems e.g. diabetes, heart disease, smoking, and oral problems such as reducing problems in preterm pregnancies and the centre is well placed to develop multidisciplinary strategies within QMUL research strategies and in collaboration with Barts Health NHS Trust

Page 12: ST BARTHOLOMEW’S AND THE ROYAL LONDON  · Web viewJob Title: Clinical Senior Lecturer in Oral Surgery / Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery Institute: Institute of Dentistry. Centre:

Centre for Clinical & Diagnostic Oral Sciences

The Centre comprises five sections: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Microbiology, Oral Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Microbiology and Dental Public Health. The Centre has a robust teaching base in all the medical support for dentistry subjects including basic science.

The Centre for Clinical and Diagnostic Oral Science has a strong research focus. There is a strong head and neck research group led by Professor Ken Parkinson. A key aim of the Centre is to become the leading UK centre for head and neck cancer. In addition epithelial biology and mucosal immunology have strong translational multidisciplinary projects.

Centre for Oral Growth & Development

The Centre comprises three sections: Dental Physical Sciences (incorporating Dental Biomaterials and Dental Biophysics), Paediatric Dentistry, and Orthodontics.

Dental Physical Sciences is located on the main College campus at Mile End in the Francis Bancroft Building, whilst Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics are 1 km away in the Dental Institute Building at Whitechapel.

The Centre currently includes approximately 25 academic members, 6 research fellows and research assistants, 12 research students, 9 MClinDent students in Paediatric Dentistry and 15 MSc students in Orthodontics.

The Centre’s current research include applied dental biomaterials research, biophysical measurement of enamel de and remineralisation, biophysical measurement of other mineralised tissues in health and disease, epidemiology, risk factors and quality of life, the physiology of mastication and salivation, and radiographic assessment of dental development.

Centre for Dental Care Professionals

The Centre for Dental Care Professionals teaches those people wishing to enter the dental healthcare profession to work alongside and supporting the dental surgeon. These include dental hygienists/therapists, oral health educators and dental nurses.

The Centre has over twenty years of experience of training dental hygienists/therapists in an integrated programme alongside dental undergraduate and postgraduate students, enhancing the Dental Institute's team approach to education. This is the primary function of the Centre. Additionally the Centre offers continuing professionals development by offering dental nurses the opportunity to train in oral health education and promotion.

Centre for Oral Clinical Research

This is a newly established Centre under the leadership of Professor Donos. This Centre will form a hub for patient orientated research within the Institute, with dedicated facilities designed to benefit a range of groups, not least clinical researchers within the wider Institute and our local patient population.
