A Letter From the Newly Appointed Pastor for St. Bede & St. Peter

Dear Parishioners of St. Bede and St. Peter Parishes, Hello. My name is Fr. George Koeune, and I recently received a call from Bishop Rassas that Cardinal Cupich has assigned me as your new Pastor beginning July 1, 2018. I am very excited and feel very blessed to be a part of two wonderful worship sites. At the

same me, I want to thank your current pastors, Fr. Shawn Gould and Fr. Mike McMahon, for their kindness and this opportunity to write to you. The Renew My Church merger has taken your Pastors away from you; it has disrupted their lives, will bring changes to both parishes, and I am sure this has le some heartache to all involved. My prayers are with Fr. Mike and Fr. Shawn as they go forward from their spiritual homes to new places, and my prayers are with everyone at the parishes of St. Bede and St. Peter. I understand if many of you are anxious or even bi er that your parishes are being merged, but let me assure you, that I will do all I can to make the transi on work well. Jesus Christ is our center, and we must always remember that we are followers of Our Lord who calls us to holiness. So, who am I? Well, I am the youngest of thirteen (yes, thirteen) children. I have nine brothers and three sisters. I was ordained a priest in 1995. I am 51 years old and this will be my fourth assignment. From 1995 to 2000, I was an Associate Pastor at St. Isaac Jogues parish in Niles. From 2000 to 2006, I was the Associate Pastor at Queen of All Saints Basilica. During my me at the Basilica, I had the opportunity to return to school on a part- me basis. In 2005, I received my Doctor of Ministry Degree. In 2006, I was assigned as Pastor of St. Eugene Parish in Chicago. Now, a er twelve years, I am on the move again. I have worked with two Catholic schools (a ministry I love), and I am very involved in the pro-life movement, project Rachel, and Eucharis c Adora on. The Blessed Mother Mary has been close to my heart before my ordina on, and my devo on to Our Lady has grown with the passing of each year. I could go on, but I would rather answer ques ons and speak to you in person. Maybe a er Easter, with your current pastors’ approval, I could have a town hall mee ng at St. Peter’s one evening, and a town hall mee ng at St. Bede’s on a different evening. Un l then, I do have many responsibili es here at St. Eugene parish that demand a lot of my me. However, please know that all of you are in my prayers and I am excited about mee ng you. Yours in Christ, Fr. George Koeune

In Remembrance: Former Pastor of St. Bede Parish, Fr. John Krebs passed away February 28, 2018.

The Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Benedict Church in Chicago on March 9, 2018. He was interred at St. Boniface Cemetery. Please remember Fr. Krebs in your prayers.

Parish of the Resurrec on of Our Lord

Right now, many of the parishioners do not have electricity and water. So, they con nue to rely on the help they are receiving from all over to sustain them. Many are s ll in refugee camps and many do not qualify for FEMA assistance. Father Njoku along with the li le group Caritas, from the parish, are making serious efforts to help parishioners rebuild their lives and their homes, although the resources are quite meager.

Mark A. Buckley, a parishioner of St. Bede, is scheduled to be ordained to the Order of Deacon on May 12, 2018 at Holy Name Cathedral by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. This is a public announcement of the upcoming ordina on and fulfills the canonical requirement. 40 Cans for 40 nights 40 Cans for 40 Nights is a Knights of Columbus charity program that connects tradi onal Lenten almsgiving with the nutri onal needs of poor families in our area. The idea of a simple, straigh orward one-can-per-day dona on is inspired by Christ’s 40 days of fas ng in the desert. This project began on the first weekend in Lent, but it’s not too late to join in! The canned food donated by the school children on Fridays and Sundays during Lent will be collected and weighed. Each Class will be weighed separately. We will post the dona ons weekly. Palm Sunday is the last day for dona ons. All food collected will be donated for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry on Holy Thursday. Dona ons at Mass can be assigned to either a School or Religious Educa on Class if requested. A table will be provided in Coleman Hall (church basement) along with bags and labels. We ask that you place the items in the bags provided and a ach a label to each bag, and if you wish, designate the dona on to a specific class. Please provide the name of the student to insure their class receives the proper credit. Our goal is to receive 500 lbs or 800 cans of food. The day a er Easter we will announce which St. Bede School class and Religious Educa on classes had the most lbs/student. These classes will receive a trophy and the Knights of Columbus will supply a pizza party on the following Friday, Sunday and Wednesday. Please donate what you feel comfortable with and if you need sugges ons the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is in need of certain items like Fruit Cocktail, Beef Stew, Beef Vegetable Soup, Chili and Pasta Sauce. All canned goods are welcome and your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God’s laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are o en, even in our own me, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to. The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the destruc on of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our ancient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warning for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we con nue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individuals. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
