TO ST. BERNARD’S

MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

"And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart."

Supernatural communication was noth-ing new for Mary. The angel Gabriel had already appeared and spoken to her when she agreed to bear God's Son. Her husband Joseph also had a kind of divine intervention in the dream where the angel told him to go ahead and marry her. When she was first pregnant, her cousin Elizabeth had been led by the Holy Spirit to know the secret that Mary was "the mother of my Lord" (Lk 1:43). Now, Jesus has just been born and a crew of earthy shepherds appears at her door with a message from heaven: that the Savior has been born. And Mary believed them. She did not doubt their sincerity or the authenticity of their message. She took the words to heart, and meditated upon the meaning of it all.

What might strike us as peculiar in all of this is that God chose to speak to Mary in a variety of ways. This holy and immaculate woman, this Mother of God, did not always receive direct communication from on high. Sometimes, God chose to speak to her through other people. Some-times, he revealed himself to them in order to reveal himself to her. And God does the same with us.

It's easy to daydream about having our own personal reve-lation from God, to hear his voice loud and clear, directing, encouraging, and supporting us in our times of need and confusion. But this isn't the standard pattern of God's operation. Mary was tuned in enough to hear God's voice all around her instead of expecting it to always sound the same. We can imitate this same kind of openness by seek-ing to discover how God may be speaking to us through the voices of others. LPI Arts & Media

Pro-Life Answers to False Pro-Choice Arguments

"Every child a wanted child". Prior to the legalization of abortion over 40 years ago, advo-cates for abortion held out the panacea of the elimination of "unwanted children" if only abortion was legal. In fact, it was Planned Parenthood, which led this charge, coining the fa-miliar slogan, "Every child a wanted child”. Despite the fact that some 57 million "unwanted" babies have died in the in-tervening period, the pro-choice lobby still uses this argu-ment to justify abortion. In the 1960's and 70's the pro-choice position was that legalizing abortion would drastically reduce child abuse. America legalized abortion and during the next 40 plus years, child abuse has skyrocketed (from 167,000 cases in 1973 to 1,694,756 cases in 2002). Yet, despite this stagger-ing increase in child abuse, the pro-choice lobby continues to tie itself in knots by now arguing that making abortion illegal would cause an increase in child abuse!!! How many more millions of children do we have to kill before their scheme starts to work? Reference: www.pro-lifearticles.org

Readings for the Week of January 1, 2017

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul The Arizona Income Tax Credit for Contributions to Qualifying Charitable Organizations for the working poor

(also known as the working poor credit) entitles you to reduce your Arizona income tax dollar for dollar for contributions to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Joint income tax filers can obtain up to $800 in reduced AZ income taxes (for single filers the amount is $400). You do not need to itemize to obtain the credit. When you make a cash donation to SVdP through this special appeal or in reg-ular Church envelopes in 2016, you will receive a letter by next Feb-ruary from the Vincentians of SVdP at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Con-ference. This letter will serve as your receipt and verification that you have made the contribution to enable you to complete AZ form 321 to file with your 2016 AZ Income Tax Return.

Your Contributions Help People The Vincentians of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Conference serve per-sons, all of whom live within the Parish boundaries. SVdP provides resources to people including helping them feed their families, obtain medicines, access transportation, avoid evictions and prevent utility shut-offs. These resources are not just financial but referrals to other agencies that also provide help with medical, legal, financial, employ-ment and other essentials. The Vincentians also pray with the people at their time of need asking for God’s blessings for them and those who support SVdP.

Other Credits The working poor credit is in addition to other credits for Arizona income tax filers. For example, you can also claim credits for cash contributions for private school tuition and public school extracurricu-lar activities. Several other charitable organizations qualify as donees for the working poor tax credit an all such contributions must be ag-gregated in calculating the credit.

Making a Donation to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Please make your check payable to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and mail it to SVdP, St. Bernard of Clairvaux Conference, 0755 N. 124th St., Scottsdale, Az 85259.
