ENTHUSIASM AND GRAMMAR There is a good reason that the writings of St. Paul don’t show up as examples in grammar textbooks. Today’s reading is a case in point. It begins with one of those long Pauline run on sentences that leave lectors gasping for breath. So what? Take a closer look at how Paul’s fervor for his subject matter derails the grammar. There is something admirable about being so caught up in his convictions that the words cannot come fast enough to express them, much less in an orderly fashion. Scripture scholars usually take this grammatical ineptness as a sign of a passage’s early importance in the Christian community, something they were so ardent about that their language never got refined. What leaves us in this condition? Re-telling the plot line of an action movie or the play-by-play of a sporting event? When was the last time any of us was so excited by our faith in Christ that we were left grasping for words, stumbling over our own errors in speech? It may be bad grammar, but it is an excellent way to inspire others with the message of Christ!

Hay una buena razón para que los escritos de Pablo no se usen como modelos de gramática correcta hoy. La lectura de hoy nos ofrece un buen ejemplo de que para Pablo el mensaje tenía precedencia sobre la gramática. La primera oración es bastante larga y deja a los lectores sin aire; luego hay una serie de declaraciones que están hilvanadas sólo en la mente de Pablo. Pero, ¿qué importa? El fervor de Pablo es tan evidente que las palabras no le salen lo suficientemente rápidas para expresar sus ideas de manera ordenada. Los estudiosos de la Escritura regularmente interpretan su falta de sentido gramático como señal de la importancia de un pasaje en la Iglesia joven; como algo tan importante para ellos que el lenguaje que usaron nunca fue refinado. ¿Qué puede causar tal estado? ¿Contar la trama de una película de acción o describir jugada por jugada de un juego de fútbol? ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que estuvimos tan excitados por nuestra fe en Cristo que nos faltaba el aire al contarlo, o cometíamos errores gramaticales por hablar con tanto entusiasmo? ¡Puede que sea ejemplo de mala gramática, pero es una manera excelente de inspirar a otros con el mensaje de Cristo!

WELCOME FATHER ANSELM NWAKUNA

With great joy we welcome Reverend Fr. Anselm Nwakuna, he is a Catholic Priest ordained for the Archdiocese of Owerri, Imo State of Nigeria. He studied Philosophy and Theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu State of Nigeria where he had a B.A in Philosophy and bachelor’s in sacred theology. He was ordained a priest in July 30th, 1993. He worked in different parishes under the Archdiocese of Owerri from 2005 to 2009. Fr. Nwakuna has strong passion in supporting the sick and the poor. When he finished his assignment as the chaplain of St Vincent De Paul, he founded Friends of the Cross Medical Missionaries, an organization that provide free medical care to the sick in rural communities. (www.friendscross.org). Father Anselm, together with the team of volunteer doctors and nurses visited all the rural communities in all the local government in Imo state. In order to concretize his desire to provide adequate medical care to many people in his community, he started building a hospital that will take care of the vulnerable children and poor widows who could not afford a place of care. In 2015, the hospital was officially opened, and the community has been receiving free medical care and support through Father Anselm generous heart. He is currently assigned to our Parish and also works as a Senior Chaplain under Spiritual Care department in Providence Tarzana Medical Center. We feel blessed to have him with us

BIENVENIDA AL PADRE ANSELMO NWAKUNA

Con gran alegría damos la bienvenida al Reverendo Padre Anselmo Nwakuna, él es un sacerdote ordenado en la Arquidiócesis de Owerri, estado de Nigeria, Imo. Estudió Filosofía y Teología. Fue ordenado sacerdote el 30 de julio de 1993. El padre Anselmo Trabajó en la Arquidiócesis de Owerri del 2005 al 2009. El padre Anselmo tiene una gran pasión por apoyar a los enfermos y a los pobres. Cuando terminó su misión como capellán de San Vicente de Paúl, fundó la asociación “Friends of the Cross Medical Missionaries”, organización que brinda atención médica gratuita a los enfermos en las comunidades rurales. (www.friendscross.org). El Padre Nwakuna, junto con el equipo de médicos y enfermeras voluntarios, visitaron todas las comunidades rurales del gobierno local en el estado de Imo. Para concretar su deseo de proporcionar atención médica adecuada a muchas personas en su comunidad, comenzó a construir un hospital que se encargaría de los niños vulnerables y las viudas pobres que no pueden pagar un lugar de atención. Desde el 2015, la comunidad ha estado recibiendo atención médica gratuita y apoyo a través del generoso corazón del Padre Anselmo, quien ahora ha sido asignado a nuestra Iglesia y a la vez estará trabajando como Capellán Principal en el departamento de Cuidado Espiritual en el Centro Médico Providence de Tarzana. Nos sentimos muy bendecidos de tenerlo con nosotros.
