As hard as it is to believe, our first month back at school is already behind us. September has flown, and our teachers and students are well into their routines, working hard and actively participating in school life. With everyone’s coopera-tion, enthusiasm and commit-ment, we have already accom-

plished much.

As you know, October is dedi-cated to our Blessed Mother. God, in His great love for us, gave us a most extraordinary favour by sending His Mother to

us at Fatima to promise us peace. The story of Fatima encourages us to pray the ro-sary to achieve true peace and

harmony.

The TCDSB Board of Trustees, adopted a motion that all school communities will pray the Ro-sary on October 6th. The Ro-sary is a prayerful reflection on the life of Jesus, and is the most popular of all the Marian devotions. As a Catholic com-munity we often come together in prayer to reflect, to celebrate

and to mourn.

We invite you to engage your children in discovering, or redis-covering, the mysteries of the Rosary on October 5th, and

throughout the year.

Finally, although it is most fitting to thank God in our daily pray-ers for all that we have, allow me this opportunity to wish all our St. Raymond families a very

On September 27, 2017, the AGM CSPC Elections were held. St. Bruno/St. Ray-mond congratulates the elected members, and look forward to working in part-nership for your children as we organize the many initia-tives and events planned for this year. This year our CSPC co-chairs are Sandra Machado and Adriana Ru-

pert. Congrats to all !

CAT-4/EQAO Results

The results of the CAT/4 testing for our Grades 2, 5 and 7 stu-dents (in 2016-2017) have been published and forwarded to the individual students and their families. Our grade 3 students scored 56-60% in reading, 67-78% in writing and 53-67% in mathematics. Our Grade 6 students scored 74-86% in reading, 52-71% in writing and 43-48% in mathematics. We will continue to make math and literacy our focus goals, and work together in partnership

with staff, students and parents to ensure that our students strive to succeed. Parents, keep in contact with your child’s

teacher throughout the year.

Civvies Day

Our school will have Civvies Day twice a month, allowing the stu-dents to wear their choice of appro-priate clothing (other than blue and white dress code). We will be asking for a $2 donation to offset and support school needs and expenses, such as support for excursions, bus transportation and in school experiences throughout

the school year.

Rosary Day

The Toronto Catholic District School Board adopted a motion that all school com-munities Pray the rosary on October 7th or the First Fri-day in October of each year. For 2017, since October 7th is a Saturday, and October 6th is a PA for most schools, everyone is encouraged to mark Rosary Day on Thurs-day, October 5th, 2017. The Word rosary is from the Latin rosarium, or “rose

garden.” The Rosary is a prayerful reflection on the life of Jesus, which involves contemplating certain Gos-pel scenes, the “mysteries”, in the company of Mary. For Pope John Paul II, “The Rosary, precisely because it starts with Mary’s own expe-rience, is an exquisitely con-templative prayer.” The complete Rosary now consists of twenty decades, the Joyful, the Luminous, the Sorrowful, and the Glo-

rious Mysteries, each con-taining five decades and one mystery per decade. Please take a few minutes with your family and recite a decade for the love of our Holy Mother, and as an example that praying as a family is very powerful. With the autumn season upon us, celebrations such as Thanksgiving Day and Hal-loween, quickly seem to be upon us. For the children, the much loved Halloween Dance-a-thon, is the oppor-tunity to dress up in their fa-vourite costume and dance to a few tunes. “Orange Shirt Day, Every Child Matters.” The Equity, Diversity, and Indig-enous Education Department of the TCDSB extended an invita-tion to all TCDSB schools to learn more about this national

movement that officially began

in 2013. Although in reality it began in 1973 when six year old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. Young Phyllis was wearing a brand new orange shirt for her first day of school – new clothes being a rare and wonderful thing for a First Na-tion girl growing up in her grandmother’s care – but her shirt was taken away from her upon arrival at the school. On September 29h, we were invited to wear Orange Shirts, and spend a part of the day learning about Indigenous peo-

ples and our history in Canada.

Terry Fox Day and Orange T-Shirt Day

On September 29, 2017, St. Bruno/St. Raymond participated in remembering Terry Fox by wearing red and white. Staff and students discussed the memory of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, which he dedicated to raise funds for cancer research. Despite the intermittent rain throughout the morning, some classes were able to walk around our neigh-bourhood to remember and honour the memory of Terry Fox. St. Bruno/St. Raymond is going paperless!

Our school encourages all our parent community to provide their e-mail address

to the office, in order to re-ceive electronic school infor-mation and letters. This will include school newsletters, calendars, letters and/or permission forms for sports events, school events, and any TCDSB information and letters provided to our school. In an effort to keep our environment paperless, we would also be providing information to you in an effi-cient and timely manner. Please know that a few pa-per copies will be kept in the office for those who do not

have electronic access.

The Food Drive will be in support of the St. Francis Table and/or the Good Shepherd Ministries (http://www.goodshepherd.ca/), a non-profit organization which provides shelter, nourishment and basic needs to those in need. The Good Shepherd Ministries receives 56% of its’ funding from donations and fundraising events through various sources - food drives being one of

the many important events held.

These charities are always in need of non-perishable foods and

canned foods. Please give generously any of the following non-perishable

food items:

The Thanksgiving season is quickly approaching and in keeping with the spirit of gratefulness and giving back to the community, we would like to remind our families that our parishes always hold a Food Drive during the Thanksgiving week-end. Parishioners from St. Peter / St. Mary of the Angels church are welcome to bring non-perishable food items to any of the Sunday Masses on Thanksgiving week-end (Oct. 7-8th). An “Elementary Progress Report Card” will be directed home to you in mid-November (November 14, 2017) providing checklist and anecdotal infor-mation detailing your child’s progress to that time. Parent/Teacher interviews will be held

on: Thursday, November 16 5:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, November 17 9:00 – 11:30 am

Two “Provincial Report Cards” will complete the year. The first will be sent home in the new

year. The second and final “Provincial Report Card” will be directed home to you at the end of the school year (June, 2018). The Board will provide further information once all dates have been confirmed.

Student Illness

With the changing season and cooler temperatures, we are reminding the children to come appropriately dressed for the autumn season. For chil-dren who become ill while at school, we can provide only short-term rest facilities until a parent is called. In cases where illness or injury appears to be serious, every effort will

be made to contact a parent.

Reminding your children to wash their hands regularly, eating healthy and getting plen-ty of rest could avoid catching

the common cold.

Peanut/Nut Free Snacks

A number of our students have been diagnosed as having a serious, life threat-ening allergy to peanuts (and/or other nuts), and other food items (e.g., eggs, milk, gluten, etc.), among other allergies.

We strongly recommend that treats brought into the classroom setting be non-food items (stickers, pen-cils, etc.).

Lockdown

We will, once again, be practic-ing our lockdown procedures with all of our students. Our first drill will be held on October 23, 2017. As with our fire drills, this practice allows all students and staff to become familiar with the expectations that have

been set out for us.

If you have specific questions regarding our procedures, please do not hesi-tate to contact us at school.

We would remind all our students that peanuts, nuts and/or products containing “traces of peanuts or nuts” are not to be brought to school.

For snacks, please note that reading food labels remains a must as compa-nies may change their poli-cies without notice.

congestion in this area. We also ask for your support regarding the safety of our Kindergarten children in their front yard. Unfortunately, the gate to the Kindergarten yard is often left open, and our little ones’ safety continues to be a primary concern. We are ask-

ing parents to walk their chil-dren to the schoolyard, sharing a goodbye hug/kiss at the gate, and allowing only your child to enter the school yard. This will enable the staff mem-ber on duty to give his or her full attention to supervising the students. A congested area makes it extremely challenging for our staff to properly super-vise our students. With your continued sup-port, we can en-sure the safety of

all our students.

Safety Reminders If you are picking up your child at school, at any time through-out the day, you are asked to report to the office to SIGN OUT your child. Please do not go directly to the class. This is a safety issue and also minimizes unnecessary disrup-tions to classroom routines. We would also ask for your support in ensuring the safety of our students by:
