The 93-mile long LVRT spans the breadth of northern Vermont from St. Johnsbury to Swanton.
The LamoiLLe VaLLey RaiL TRaiL (LVRT) is a four season multiple use recreation trail offering a variety of year-round non-motorized recre-ation opportunities and snowmobiling during the win-ter months. Once complete, the 93-mile long trail will span the breadth of northern Vermont from St. Johnsbury to Swanton. The LVRT boasts breathtaking views of the Green Mountains and a world-class recreational expe-rience for users of all ages and levels of experience.
From Railroad to Rail Trail: A brief historyThe St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain Rail Road Company was established in 1916. In 1972, the SJ&LC
petitioned the former Interstate Commerce Commis-sion to abandon the entire line. The State of Vermont acquired the railroad in 1973; the Lamoille Valley Rail Road Company (LVRR) most recently managed the line under lease. Over the intervening years railroad opera-tions waned and eventually ceased in August 1995. In 2002 the Vermont Agency of Transportation en-tered into a long-term lease with Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) for the State-owned railroad line between St. Johnsbury and Swanton to create a year-round, multi-use recreation trail. In June, 2003, the line was “rail-banked,” to be used for interim trail use in accordance with federal authorization; thus set-ting the stage for the creation of the LVRT.
1. Know and respect the allowable use of the trail.
2. Respect other trail users.3. Keep your dogs leashed.4. Respect public and private
landowners’ property.5. Use good judgement and tread
lightly; trail conditions are subject to change at any time.
6. Stay on marked trails.7. Respect natural resources, historic
structures, and wildlife.8. Be prepared with food, water, and first aid.9. Pack out your trash.10. Respect all trail closures.11. Plan ahead, be safe, and have fun.
