Greene Class

We've been working on our music skills in Greene Class, focusing on all playing the same rhythm on the same notes in time with each other!

Brook Class

Year 1 have been reading the story of Eddie’s Garden. We have had some great discussions about whether we thought slugs were a good snack or if Eddie was a good gardener!

Year 2 have been writing all about the Fantastic Mr Fox! All children thoroughly enjoyed learning sign language with Mrs Bramley, especially the sign for being hungry!

Wilson Class

InWilson this week we have been learning an exciting new Maths game called Times Tables Fingers! In English we have continued to enjoy the Tempest and have been learning how to use apostrophes. We are learning about the different functions of a plant and starting our unit on Time and Roman numerals.

Dover Class

Dover class have been taking and editing photographs of the school grounds using the iPads.

We have also been finding out about child labour in early Victorian Britain. Did you know that children as young as 4 from poor families often had no choice but to go to work to earn money for their families?

Book Donations FOSC are currently accepting donations of the ‘100 books to read before

leaving Primary School”. Thank you to those parents who have already donated by leaving good quality copies of books at Reception. The school will gratefully receive any books that are not on this list in good quality for use within the classrooms and as part of our support for reading at home.

Forest SchoolLast Friday we planted some strawberry plants next to

our raspberry plants in our new raised beds. We are looking forward to enjoying eating the healthy fruits this summer. Alex and Henry were very busy creating a ‘Forest’ out of sticks in our mud pile, and we all checked in on the tadpoles to see how they are developing….no legs yet!

Noel Class Was Dick Turpin a heartless criminal or a gentleman thief? That is the question we have been debating this week with both sides providing their point of view with evidence to support their arguments. We’ve also looked at special occasions in French and held a class birthday party to learn the new vocabulary!

Deaf Awareness Week- 3rd-9th May 2021

This week at St Catharine’s we are excited to be celebrating Deaf Awareness Week! Did you know that one in five adults in the UK is either Deaf/deaf or has a hearing loss? (That’s a lot isn’t it!) Isn’t it incredible to think that British Sign Language, (or BSL) is used by over

eighty-seven thousand Deaf/deaf people in the UK? Many people are not aware that there is a difference between being ’Deaf ’ and being ‘deaf ’. People in the Deaf community

describe themselves as ‘Deaf ’ with a capital ‘D’ to express their pride in their Deaf ident i ty. Br i t i sh S ign Langua ge (BSL ) i s the l angua ge o f the Deaf community in Great Britain, which has its own set of social beliefs, behaviours, art, history and values.

School Value: We are all special and unique.

Book Recommendations

Reception and KS1 - Howard the Average Gecko. Howard is THE most extraordinary creature in the rainforest because of his unique ability to camouflage. At least, that’s what he thinks. When confronted by lots of other camouflaged creatures, he is horrified at being so ‘average’. Who will love him now?!

KS2 - Victoria Stitch - Bad and Glittering. Twins Victoria Stitch and Celestine are denied their royal birth-right.

Celestine accepts the decision with good grace, but Victoria Stitch is consumed with her obsession for power. The twins are like moonlight and sunshine - could it be possible to break free of the role you have been given, rewrite your story, and change your own destiny? Victoria Stitch is a fabulous anti-heroine who will appeal to young witchy fans of Harriet Muncaster’s Isadora Moon or Laura Ellen Anderson’s Amelia Fang.

Teacher recommendation: This week Mrs Hunter recommends Winnie the Pooh - a classic tale of friendship between Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Christopher Robin, Owl, Kanga, Roo and of course Tigger all in the 100 acre Wood.

Don’t forget to use the Pearson Bug Club books available to all children. This is an excellent resource to supplement the hard copies of the reading scheme sent home via the class teachers. Please talk to your child's class teacher who can allocate a selection of the Pearson’s ebooks for pupils.

St Catharine’s School Unofficial Funds

Every single pound helps, the Diocese will fund £9 for every £1, so £10 becomes £100, £50 becomes £500 and £100 becomes £1000. This money can be used to make improvements to

the school building and outside spaces that we can all benefit from, but especially the children. So we ask you once again to dig deep for however much you can donate, £10 from each family would generate almost £12,000 for the school. How wonderful would that be!

Every single penny of which goes towards making the environment your child learns in, even better. Please, give what you can.
