St. Catherine Cemetery - Ossineke, Alpena County, Michigan

History

St. Catherine Church Cemetery was established in 1904 behind the current church on Nicholson Hill. Members of this Church would probably have previously attended St. Gabriel Church in Black River (established about 1896), St. Bernard's (established 1861), St. Anne or St. Mary's (both established in 1883) Churches in Alpena, Michigan. Being located in the southern part of Alpena County, St. Catherine Church would draw members from both Alpena and Alcona Counties. Named for patroness St. Catherine of Alexandria, this community Church and Cemetery serviced the needs of this farming region and recreational area. Early pastors include Rev. Godrey Lenzen, who lived in Alpena and made the regular trek to St. Catherine by horse and buggy, Rev. Joseph Poulin, who was given charge of St. Catherine as a mission of St. Anne in Harrisville, assisted in the establishment of the original church in 1904. Rev. Louis T. Bouchard succeeded Father Poulin in early winter 1905 and remained until 1913 when he went to St. Anne Parish in Alpena. Rev. J. Arthur Houle served the parish from 1913 to 1918; followed by Father Shumacker who remained only for a few months. Rev. Frederick W. Ryan took charge of St. Catherine from 1919 to 1925, being succeeded by Rev. J. N. Delehanty who was pastor until 1934 when Rev. J. A. Moleski became resident pastor for the next 18 months. For a further history of the parish, readers are referred to the Parish Centennial book being published in 2001.

Format

This book is in alphabetical order with a listing of the persons recorded either from the sexton records or from the headstone readings. Since some persons have their names on a headstone or as the owner of a lot, not all of the names in this listing are deceased. An asterisk (*) following a name indicates the presence of a headstone. When available the birth and death of the person is included, followed by the location of the grave or stone. Comments are added as information was available primarily from the headstone or from obituaries as they were able to be accessed.

Maps are included in the beginning of the booklet to lead readers to the approximate location of graves or headstones. The maps give surnames only of the persons who either own or are buried in those lots. More detailed information was not permitted due to size of this booklet.
