2010 Diocesan Development Fund

A blessed thank you to everyone who contributed last weekend and to those who offered a gift this weekend to support the Diocesan Development Fund (DDF). Our parish goal is 100% participation. Each and every person’s gift is important, even a gift the size of a mustard seed. For those who have not made a pledge, please join us in supporting the vital programs and ser-vices throughout the Diocese of San Bernardino. Sim-ply fill out a pledge card and place it in the offertory basket or drop it in the mail. Thank you for your gen-erosity and investing in our Catholic Church through the DDF!

Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory.

-- 1saiah 62:2

The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, January 18, 2010

in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and cooperation while I served our parish as Bulletin Editor and Administrative Assistant for almost nine years (after

being a volunteer for several years). During this time, the staff and our parishioners have been a central part of my life. While I look forward to the opportunities re-tirement will bring me, I will miss the many personal and professional relationships that I have developed while working at St. Catherine. Although I’ll be retired, I’ll still be a parishioner and volunteer. Please give your support to our new Bulletin Editor, Maribel Avila. Watch the bulletin as J.S. Paluch, our publisher, works with us to make your bulletin better than ever. Remember me in your prayers. Thank you & God bless, Carolyn Bilinski

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 January 17, 2010

Dear Parishioners,

Today the Church celebrates one of the three epiphanies, namely the wedding feast at Cana. You may have heard many commentaries and points regarding this first miracle done by Jesus in the Gospel according to St. John. However, I would like to point out two times from the gospel. First is

the way Jesus addressed his mother, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” The second is the observation of the evangelist St John, “there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremo-nial washings.”

1. “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” The use of the word “Woman” is not about the unimportance of Mary; rather, we should look at this in view of Genesis 3:15, which tells that the Lord God says to the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.” Enmity is between the serpent and the woman; the woman (Mary) destroys the serpent by allowing God the Son, the Lord Jesus, to take flesh in her. Revelation 12:1, 5 writes, “A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod.” Thus it is clear that Jesus is referring to Mary as the woman promised in Genesis and alluded to in the book of Revelation. The hour that the evangelist St. John mentions here refers to the glorification of Christ at the cruci-fixion, death and resurrection. Bruce Vawter, C.M. in his work, “The Gospel according to John,” writes, “Just as it is in this glorification that Jesus achieves his destiny, so it is in virtue of it alone that Mary’s intercession can have efficacy. Nevertheless, that hour can be, and is, foreshadowed in the ‘signs’ of Jesus.”

2. “There were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings.” Bruce Vawter, C.M. writes, “Jewish custom demanded ceremonial washings before and after eating. John alludes to this ritual in order to explain the presence of such a large quantity of water. This circumstance also allows him to point up a pattern that will ac-company Jesus’ “signs”: A type associated with Judaism is systematically replaced by an antitype that originates in Christ. . . . The jars contained nothing but water. John mirrors the reticence of the first chapter of Genesis in alluding to Christ’s creative miracle: His word alone suffices to effect the change.”

Dear Parishioners, as the Gospel for today ends, “Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory.” These past weeks, we heard and read of the manifestation of the glory of Jesus in the star the magi from the East saw at its rising and came to Bethlehem to do him homage. We heard and read of the glory of Jesus manifested through the Spirit that rested on him like a dove, and the voice that came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” For this Sunday, let us be encouraged that even when the hour of Jesus had not yet arrived, he did his first miracle at the words of Mary, “They have no wine.” Let us not fail to call on Mary our mother. Why? As the Gospel (Jn 19:26-27) relates, “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son.’ Then he said to the dis-ciple, ‘Behold, your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.” In that very hour of our sal-vation, Mary has become OUR Mother! Secondly, Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Whereby water in the jars of stone was for purification, the water from the side of Christ at his glorification on the cross is our life and our salvation. -Fr. Gene Sabio, MSC

At the Crossroads

The Stages of Revelation: the Role of the Prophets

The Catechism of the Catholic Church talks of the stages of God’s revelation to humankind and of humanity’s free acceptance of God, by degrees of knowledge and inti-macy.

After the experience of God by our first parents, God re-vealed Himself through the Covenant with Noah: God’s commitment to preserve all of creation and all of human-ity as fundamentally His. This was followed by the Cove-nant with Abraham. With Abraham, God made it known that though peoples were diverse and conflictive, still, they come from the same root, living in the same land, and called to continue the procreation of the human race and the preservation of the integrity of creation. The great liberating act of God in the exodus of Israel from Egypt spoke of God’s forming a people, not based on ethnicity and race but fundamentally on the class cate-gory of the poor, needy, violated, and oppressed. The vocation of this liberated people, Israel, was to administer the Justice and Mercy of Yahweh, as a new way of life defined by the New Charter of Liberation: the Ten Com-mandments, and the legislations in the Covenant Code and the Code of Holiness. This Israel would do as a priestly people: a mediator between God and all of crea-tion, a nation ready and willing to offer herself on behalf of all, announcer of God’s saving deeds, and a living ex-ample of holiness by her prayerful life and ethical conduct of governing the people.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church continues, thus: (64) “Through the prophets, God forms his people in the hope of salvation, in the expectation of a new and ever-lasting Covenant intended for all, to be written on their hearts. The prophets proclaim a radical redemption of the People of God, purification from all their infidelities, a sal-vation which will include all the nations. Above all, the poor and humble of the Lord will bear this hope. Such holy women as Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Miriam, Deb-orah, Hannah, Judith and Esther kept alive the hope of Israel's salvation. The purest figure among them is Mary.”

But who were the prophets through whom God chose to reveal Himself in a still more dramatic way? And what are the more profound sides of God to which humanity and all of creation are called to participate and to be in communion with?

To be a prophet, in the Old Testament tradition, means to be a spokesperson of God. Essentially, prophetism in the Old Testament was not about predicting the future, but about proclaiming the divine alternative in a human situation of evil and sin and of environmental degradation and ecological destruction. As persons, the prophets came from the ranks of the poor and arose from the cracks of society. – Fr. Ben

Annual Day of Prayer and Reparation for Abortion

Please plan to set aside some time on Mon-day, January 18, for St. Catherine's annual Day of Prayer and Reparation for Abor-tion. The day begins with 8:00 am Mass and is followed by Eucharistic Adoration, ending

with the 5:30 pm Mass. Adorers are needed to spend time with Our Lord in the side chapel during the day. Just as God never forgets one of His children, carved in the palm of His hand, so we must remember them and ask God's forgiveness for this atrocity which has taken over 50 million lives of American children since its passage in 1973, with Roe v Wade. SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA

By B.R. Dunkelman

Crusaders whispered your story from the corners of the Far East.

Maidens, the educated, the religious, and the meek bow at your feet.

A gem in the seat of knowledge, Alexandria was unmatched

By your youth, beauty, or intellect. Maximin’s flattery turned cruel and

torturous, his affections meant nothing to you.

You served Our Lord fearless, strong and true. Your ardent faith and beauty were no match

for a spiked wheel. Imprisoned, you suffered, hungered, and thirsted.

Many of us still do, and look to you for reminders of our strength in faith.

Your prayers splintered that wheel of pain, An entire army converted.

The Devil, the selfish World, our own Fallen Nature, Here are the true enemies.

Fight them with Humility, Prayer, and Generosity. You fought hard that bloody battle

And rose victorious over Evil. Love of Our Lord saved your soul.

Raised on Mount Sinai by a holy host of angels. Rest O’ Pure One, fear no more.

None shall be crowned who has not fought well. Nov. 3, 2009~BRD

News from St. Catherine School Excellence in Education - Body, Mind & Spirit

A Few Thoughts on Your School

Our current enrollment is 330 students, which is up from last year at this time, which was up from the year be-fore. Of that number, 70% are parishioners from St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish. We not only challenge our students with a great curriculum, we immerse them in Catholic faith throughout their day, every day. Many of our students receive some form of financial aid to empower them to attend. At the same time, we raise funds and goods to support the parish food drive, warm clothes drive, Holy Childhood (the missions), care packages for our soldiers, and Riverside Life Services. Our school is an integral part of our parish ministry.

In the last few years, we have improved our school. Our old and decaying iron fence was replaced. We up-graded our electrical system. We set up the red communication sign in the parking lot. We upgraded our science lab and replaced all of our computers in our computer lab. In curriculum, we expanded our music program. We split our lower grades’ math into half classes (and increased our staff size). We established a new Pre-Kindergarten program (and increased our staff size). We established an alumni program. All this while maintain-ing our expansive curriculum.

Your school does a lot for our children. Would you please help us? Our primary social (and fundraising) event of the year is the Valentine’s Gala at the Mission Inn. Tickets are available at the school at $135 per couple and $70 for single. Additionally, we need auction items (anyone want to give a weekend at their vacation home or a ride in their plane?). Your support is important to us, and the ministry that we do. Please pray for our fund-raiser, consider giving a donation, and then come enjoy an evening of dining and dancing.

I think I met a little angel today; I am not sure because I don't think that I have seen an angel before. Today, my partner and I visited an apartment near the main Riverside Public Li-brary. The "clients" were a young mother and the sweetest little toddler that I have ever seen (except for my children).

The little angel's name was Christina, and she was 17 months old. As my partner spoke to

Christina's mother, this little angel decided to share her toys with me. She would bring over a block, and I would say, "Thank you Christina." She would give a little curtsy, bow and go for another little toy. This went on for five or six repetitions; she even offered me her sippy cup. It is kind of tough to refuse an angel's sippy cup.

Christina's mom was just laid off. Christina's father does not seem to be around. When we arrived, Christina's mom was filling out paperwork for a job. Your generosity allowed us to provide two bags of food, diapers and partial rental assistance. Also, your generosity allowed me to meet a little angel. Thank you.
