Third Sunday of Easter Today’s Readings First Reading: God exalted Jesus as leader and savior (Acts 5). Psalm: I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading: To the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might (Revelation 5). Gospel: When the disciples came ashore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread (John 21. Readings for the Week Monday: Acts 6:8-15; Ps 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30; Jn 6:22-29 Tuesday: Acts 7:51 — 8:1a; Ps 31:3cd-4, 6, 7b, 8a, 17, 21ab; Jn 6:30-35 Wednesday: Acts 8:1b-8; Ps 66:1-3a, 4-7a; Jn 6:35-40 Thursday: Acts 8:26-40; Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20; Jn 6:44-51 Friday: Acts 9:1-20; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 6:52-59 Saturday: Acts 9:31-42; Ps 116:12-17; Jn 6:60-69 Sunday: Acts 13:14, 43-52; Ps 100:1-2, 3, 5; Rv 7:9, 14b-17; Jn 10:27-30 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Third Sunday of Easter Friday: St. Damien de Veuster Scripture Reflection “I am going fishing.” What an announcement! If asked who made it, and not told it was a Bible quote, we might guess “Grandpa” or “Uncle Fred,” or admit, “I said that last summer!” But it is a Bible quote, from today’s Gospel. The person who said it also once declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Yes, it’s Peter! So today’s announcement seems quite the comedown. Last Sunday Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” But Peter seems determined to return to his pre-apostolic occupation, until Jesus intervenes, making Peter’s later announcement deeper, “Lord, you know that I love you,” and Peter’s apostolic calling clearer, “Tend my sheep.” Peter does so. Acts presents the consequences: Peter de-clares, “We must obey God rather than men.” As Revelation proclaims, “Worthy is the Lamb”—to receive Peter’s lifelong service, and ours. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The Annulment Process by Fr. Garrett O’Brien, JCL My previous two articles gave a glimpse of the scriptural foundations of Christian marriage and our development of laws which govern that sac-ramental covenant. Today I would like to give an overview of the pro-cess that is used by the Church to assess whether a marriage is invalid. The first point that needs to be made is that the Church presumes that an exchange of consent between two baptized people creates a valid sacramental bond. Because of this, it is important to address one of the most common concerns for those who approach the annulment process. Some have thought that when an annulment is granted, it will in effect render the children of that bond illegitimate in the eyes of the Church. I can say definitively, this is not so. Since the Church presumes marriages are valid, this means that any child born of such a marriage is consid-ered legitimate even if that marriage is later proven invalid. The annul-ment process has no effect on how the Church (or anyone else) should regard the children. Now, about the process for determining invalidity: it involves a judge (sometimes three), a defender, advocates, witnesses, the right of de-fense, and there is an appeal process. It sounds like a court procedure because it is! Since it is a juridical process, we can avoid arbitrariness and preserve justice toward God’s sacraments as well as toward all par-ties involved. It would be an offense against the sacred for a mere man to judge for nullity when, in reality, a sacrament exists. At the same time, it would not be just for two individuals to live as if bound by a marriage that, in fact, never came about. In pursuing justice, the Church outlines a process in four phases: the submission of the cause, the collection of evidence, the discussion, and the decision. For the person who seeks an annulment, his or her experi-ence of the process begins with the preparation of his or her case for submission. This is usually the most labor-intensive part. The person who submits the case (the petitioner) will write a narrative aided by a ques-tionnaire. It is so important to meet with a priest, deacon, or specialist for guidance before the narrative is started. The narrative is the story of personal history and the story of the marriage. In all honesty, writing the narrative can be one of the most challenging, but grace-filled, parts

of the process. Yes, it does require that the person revisit some painful parts of the past, but this is necessary in order for the Church, who is a loving mother, to listen and to understand the struggle. At the end, a great healing can result: the petitioner is no longer alone with these past memories. The Church helps the petitioner to sort out that rela-tionship and determine the real truth of the matter. After the petitioner collects the needed forms and documentation, the case is ready for submission. The other party to the marriage (the re-spondent) will be contacted by the officials in the tribunal. There is no requirement for the two parties to be in touch with one another direct-ly. In fact, even though the annulment process is a legal trial, the goal of the process is not to determine “guilt” in one party or another. In-stead, both parties and the canon lawyers involved are examining the marriage for invalidity. The respondent has the option whether to par-ticipate, and it is not necessarily an obstacle if the respondent chooses to not participate. After this, the judge determines what “ground” will be used as the basis for nullity. Then the witnesses are given a few weeks to contribute their testimony. Testimony of an expert witness often is needed for the exam-ination of psychological factors which may have been in place at the time of the consent. Before the case goes to the judge, the parties have the option to review the testimony and make additional comments. Next, a canonist writes a brief defending the validity of the bond, then the judge examines the case to determine whether it is morally certain that the marriage is invalid based on the selected ground. There is no way to know how long the process will take, but if all the documents are submitted in a timely fashion, the whole process can unfold in roughly 8–12 months. In sum, the annulment process is a time-tested way by which the Church shows her willingness to enter deeply into the lives of her children. The Church is willing to accompany all people, no matter the burdens they carry, so that they can fully enjoy the blessings of new life that Jesus has won for us. Fr. Tim and I stand ready to assist anyone who may have more questions. Anyone interested in hearing more is welcome to call me at the parish office or join me on Tuesday, May 14, 7-9 pm, in the Melancon Center. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Archdiocese is truly blessed by the service of many holy and dedicated priests, especially our retired priests, who have served our Archdiocese so faithfully. We currently have over 50 retired priests, many who continue to serve in our Archdiocese in many ways. The annual retirement collection on Good Shepherd Sunday, May 11-12, 2019, is used to support the medical and retirement expenses of these priests. Your participation in this collection is a way to say “thank you” to our retired Archdiocesan priests for their many years of service to us, the Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. I assure you that your sup-port will benefit the priests for many years to come. As you know, this observance is on Mother’s Day. As we thank God for our mothers, living and deceased, we can also give a gift to our spiritu-al fathers on that day. Please join me daily in prayer for vocations to the priesthood that others may follow in their footsteps to give their lives to be good shepherds in leading the flock of Christ. With gratitude for your generosity and wishing you God’s blessings in this Easter Season, I am Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
