Health Ministry at St. Cecilia!

During the past several months, members of our parish, with the assistance of Susan Ferrone, whom I hired as a program devel-opment consultant, have created a health ministry program for our parish. The mission of the pro-gram is to promote health and wellness in mind, body and spirit within our parish and our commu-nity. We presented our plan to the parish council at the July 29, 2014 meeting and received the unanimous support of the council to continue the development of the program into its operational phase. We plan to launch the pro-gram on October 1, 2014. What is the St. Cecilia Health Ministry? The health ministry is a pastoral service and educational program, under the direction of a part time director, using con-tracted parish nurses and volun-teers, which will provide three types of programming: 1.) indi-vidual screening, consultation, referral and advocacy services; 2.) health and wellness education to providers as well as individuals and parishioners; and 3.) groups, activities and programs (for ex-ample, grief support, parent train-ing, etc.). In the parish health survey con-ducted last September, we (our parish community) identified sev-eral health and wellness issues we are managing. The top six priorities were: prob-lems with stress, need for spiritual renewal, poor health habits, finan-cial problems, cannot afford medical care/medicine, and

chronic illness and or disability. We will address these issues through the outreach and educa-tional functions listed above and will measure the results we achieve. We want to reduce stress in program participant lives. We want to help people experience spiritual renewal. We want to connect people with re-sources in the community to help them. And we will measure whether what we are doing is having an effect. We anticipate staff will be hired and begin working on October 1. Between October 2014 and June 2015, we plan to deliver the fol-lowing services: 1. Make 100 post-hospital home

visits 2. Conduct 250 1:1 conversa-

tions, and provide assess-ments, insights, coaching and support

3. Provide 100 referrals to local resources

4. Make 25 home visits 5. Conduct 12 group meetings

for a variety of groups (for example, support groups for grief, divorce, obesity, etc.)

6. Deliver 4 trainings (volunteers, parish nurses, etc.)

7. Provide resources via the li-brary, website, and printed material

8. Provide 4 parish-wide events: blood pressure clinics, colon cancer screening, etc.

This is an ambitious undertaking. But these are serious times we live in, and require a serious ap-proach, competent people, and well managed programming to deliver the results we desire. As I have mentioned in homilies dur-

ing the past year, something sig-nificant is happening to us: the toxic nature of our culture is un-dermining our capacity to live our Christian life with integrity and joy in the unity of our parish community. Our faith is our an-swer. Our love for one another is the means. Our parish health ministry will give us the structure we need to learn the truth, walk in faith, and love one another as brothers and sisters. It will help us become a parish community, alive in Christ. I encourage you to check out our website at stceciliahastings.com and click the health ministry icon on the menu bar. There are sev-eral documents available on the site which explain different as-pects of our program. Finally, let me offer my sincere gratitude to Susan Ferrone and to the members of the Health Minis-try Planning Committee. I have done program development dur-ing my years at Catholic Social Services. Some of my big ideas floundered, for lack of preplan-ning and experience. This effort is different. The health ministry program that was created during the past several months is well conceived, financially solvent, spiritually inspiring, and pro-grammatically achievable. Susan Ferrone and her team did an out-standing job. I look forward to bringing this vision to life! Fr. Walsh

Max (8), Rowen (5), and Charlie (3) Vertin, (children of Jason and Betty Vertin), were diagnosed with Duschenne Muscular Dystrophy between July 2010 and August 2011. DMD is a genetic disease that causes the gradual deteriora-tion of muscles. It is caused by an absence of dystrophin, a protein that helps keep muscles intact. This disorder first causes general weakness and muscle wasting in the hips, pelvic area, thighs and shoulders, and eventually weakens the heart and breathing muscles. Young men with Duchenne typically live into their late twenties. Because there is no cure, many young men lose their battle even sooner.

Please pray for vocations STEWARDSHIP ~ “After the fire, there was a small whispering sound.” !Kings 19:12 For many of us, our prayers are petitions to God, asking Him for something we want. How many times do we take time, in silence, to ask God what He wants from us? How do we know what God wants us to do unless we listen to Him on a regular basis?

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who supported the mission teams to Gallup, New Mexico spiritually, financially, and many other ways! We were able to serve over 90 chil-dren, over 100 homeless men, and grow in our own faith through praying and serving alongside the Missionaries of Charity. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of so many generous people willing to share their time, talent, and treasure with us. May God bless and reward you! Sincerely, Mission Teams 1 & 2
