First Reading: How many of our modern policians and mon- archs would do well to imitate this prayer of Solomon as he comes to the throne! He is touchingly conscious of his own inadequacies and inexperience. He does not ask for anything for his own ad- vantage, but just for the skills he needs to rule his people well. In reply the Lord promises him plenty of material rewards. The Lord made him a canny businessman too, for he built up a fortune as middleman, selling horses from Asia Minor to Egypt, and chariots to go with them from Egypt to Asia Minor, as well as mining the minerals of the land. No wonder the Queen of Sheba was bowled over! 2 Gospel Reading: This lile joyful pair of parables could well have been told by Jesus at a moment of discouragement for the disciples: you may be having difficules, but it is all worth it.The follower of Jesus must be convinced that the Kingdom is worth everything: the de- mands are absolute, as we have seen so constantly with the volunteer who was not allowed even to bury his dead, or the ones who must enter life crippled or half-blind in order to avoid harming others. The feature which appears in both parables is sell everything he owns’. Com- bine this with the reluctance of the disciples to accept the message of suffering, their inability to understand that Christ must enter into his glory only by suffering, and we enter into the world of the first generaon of Chrisans. To become a Chrisan might lose them their jobs and friends. It might lead to persecuon from Jews or Romans – Paul suffered equally from each on his journeys. It might cut them off from advancement because they would not accept the emperor as divine and Lord but insisted on crying out Christ is Lord’. Henry Wansborough OSB . even to bury his dead, or the ones who must enter life crippled or half-blind in order to avoid

harming others. The feature which appears in both parables is ‘sell everything he owns’. Com-

bine this with the reluctance of the disciples to accept the message of suffering, their inability

to understand that Christ must enter into his glory only by suffering, and we enter into the

world of the first generation of Christians. To become a Christian might lose them their jobs

Going into Hospital? Going into Hospital? If you or one of your family is going into hospital

please ensure that the Catholic Chaplaincy at the hospital is informed so that the inpatient can

receive appropriate care. At the moment, access to patients in hospital is restricted and the

chaplain may be the only person outside the strictly medical staff who can be in contact and

who can supply the consolation of sacramental and pastoral care to relieve busy ward staff.

Your relative will then receive regular visits from Fr Daniel, Fr Rob or Fr Phil during their stay.

You can also keep in touch with the occasional phone call to the ward but please be conscious

of the workload of staff at this hectic period for front line health personnel. To contact the

chaplain’s office call 02392 286408 (or through the main switchboard 02392 286000). You can

also email at [email protected]

Catholic Grandparents Association On 26th July we celebrate

the Feast of St Anne & St Joachim . We invite grandchildren

and grandparents, to send us a picture, prayer, or some mes-

sage about their grandparents/grandchildren for us to make

into display. Please send contributions to

[email protected]

THANKS TO STEWARDS : I want to personally say a huge thank you to all those involved

with the reopening of both our parish churches and responded to my call for help in doing this.

The truth is we would not be having any public masses if these people had not stepped forward

to help with the organization of it all. Huge amounts of work has gone on behind the scenes to

do this, from rearranging the churches, completing risk assessments, training stewards up, or-

ganizing rotas etc etc. Thank you! Pease let me know if you are able to help with this.

Reflection—17th Sunday in Ordinary Time—26th July 2020 The first reading tells us how the young King Solomon opted for the great treas-ure of accepting God to rule his life by doing God’s will. That is why he requested of God for the gift of prudence, “an understanding heart to distinguish right from wrong, so that he might govern God’s people properly. Yahweh was pleased with his request and granted him a wise and discerning heart which enabled him to surpass everyone in wis-dom. In the second reading, Paul teaches that wisdom to perceive God's grace and use it, is essential for those who want to follow Him and to do His will, thus remaining in His Kingdom. He assures Rome’s Christian community that “all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” In the Gospel, using three mini parables and one concluding parable or simile, Jesus teaches us that God’s Kingdom (the rule of God in us, accepting Jesus as our God and Savior, putting our Faith in God and doing His will), is something of extraordi-nary value, like a hidden treasure or a costly pearl, and that possessing it calls for a to-tal commitment to preserve it. The Kingdom of God is God’s reign in our hearts, in our lives, in our homes, in our society, and in our world. Only those who develop a search-ing mind and a heart willing to give up everything for the great treasure of God’s King-dom will be rewarded. Through the first and second parables of the treasure and pearl, Jesus teaches us that identifying God’s will and living according to the Gospel (both with His grace), are the most precious and worthwhile things in life. Through Jesus and his Gospel, we come to know and understand the real meaning of life, the will of God for us each day, and the most important things we must do to secure our eternal salva-tion. We should live every moment in view of our precious goal. Most of the time, we might be chasing false treasures . Thus, the really valuable “pearl” of sharing in God’s life through Jesus here on earth and later in Heaven, is never found. Let us always remem-ber that Heaven is within the reach of all of us who try to do the will of God, following the ordinary vocations of life and enjoying this world's joys and pleasures within the framework of God's Commandments. When we do this, we are already living in the Kingdom of Heaven while we are still on earth. We need to take all precautions to keep our greatest treasure safe: We will be able to keep safe the treasure of our personal relationship with Jesus by accepting him every day as our God and Savior, by allowing him to have total control over our lives through our loving obedience to his will, by asking him daily for the strengthening and

guidance of his Holy Spirit, by talking to him daily in prayer, by lis-tening to him in our meditative reading of the Bible, by getting reconciled to him and others every day, asking pardon and for-giveness for our sins, by offering Him our lives on the altar during the Holy Mass, and by allowing Him to nourish our souls frequent-ly, by receiving Jesus in Holy Communion.
