St. Columbanus’ KofC Council #14991 is honoring Deacon Chris at their Gala.

Deacon Chris has dedicated a good part of his life to serving the Catholic Church and St. Columbanus. Over the last several years he has brought into the faith almost 100 children through baptism. He has brought communion and comfort to numerous home-bound parishioners. He assists at almost every fu-neral, prepares and offers homilies a few times each month and is always willing to help with a soft voice and pleasant smile. Two of his sons have followed his example of service and are currently studying to become priests at St. Joseph’s Seminary. We are lucky to have Deacon Chris. The KofC Gala will be held on March 24th at Mulinos at Lake Isle, in Eastchester, running from Noon until 5:00 p.m. There will be a cocktail hour, dinner and dessert, as well as beer, wine and soda. The cost will be $70.00 per person. Please join us in honoring Deacon Chris for his sacrifice and years of service to our commu-nity. Contact the rectory for registration info. before

~PASTOR’S NOTES~

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the sa-cred season of Lent. Ashes will be given out at St. Columba-nus after the morning Masses (7:30&9:00 a.m.). At 4:00 p.m. ashes will be distrib-uted at a prayer ser-vice and again at 7:00 p.m. Mass. Lent is a penitential

time when we FAST (one main meal and two smaller meals). This is required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We must also ABSTAIN from eating meat. Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are days we cannot eat meat. Besides fasting and abstaining on the appointed days, we should also give up something we like to eat (candy, alcohol, etc.) or do (internet, movies, etc.). Besides giving up things we can do positive spiritual activities such as spiritual reading (the Bible, lives of a Saint, etc.), helping out at CCD on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, or praying one day a week at an abortion site during the 40 Days for Life for the end of abortion...I do Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m. in Rockland County on my day off. You can also attend weekday Mass and Monday evening Holy Hour (7:00 p.m.). On Fridays of Lent we have a Holy Hour at 6:00 p.m. before Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. I especially encourage everyone to pray the Rosary daily and continue to pray it daily throughout the year. St. Padre Pio said that this is the spiritual weapon for our times. Let’s make this Lent a special time of prayer and sacrifice to draw us closer to Jesus, who died for our sins. Each day is a gift from God we should never take for granted. As we recite in distributing the ashes to each individual, “Remember O Man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return.” The image above is an illumination for the entrance antiphon for Ash Wednesday. The Latin quote is from the book of Wisdom, “You are merciful to all, O Lord, and despise nothing that you have made. You overlook people’s sins, to bring them to repentance, and you spare them, for you are the Lord our God.” Amen. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
