WELCOME!We are so happy that you are here! Thank you for choosing St. Columbkille as your place of worship today! We would love to walk with you on your journey of faith. Whether you are new to Christianity and Catholicism, you would like to grow in relationship with Jesus, or you are actively leading others to Jesus, there is a group here to encourage and support you. Please feel free to introduce yourself to Father Mike or Deacon Bob Baker after Mass or contact the parish office at 937-382-2236 or [email protected] to be linked up with the parish group that is right for you! To learn about our parish life, please visit stcolumbkille.org or our FB page: facebook.com/stcolumbkillecatholicchurch/.

WHAT SHOULD WE ENDURE?“I, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner for Christ Jesus, urge you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment; I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I should have liked to retain him for myself, so that he might serve me on your behalf in my imprisonment for the gospel, but I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced but voluntary. Perhaps this is why he was away from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a brother, beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, as a man and in the Lord. So, if you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me.”

Individual parishioners, and those associated with parish organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Sodality were most generous, as always, and the poor and needy of Clinton County are very grateful. Donations included in the monthly Poor and Needy Collection Envelopes, as well as direct contributions from the community, provide the means to offer emergency assistance for food, rent, utility payments and medication costs. We rely on your support to allow us to continue our mission. Our donors are remembered in our prayers at each meeting. Those in need of assistance, or anyone wanting to get in touch with us, may reach us by calling 937-382-6851 and leave name, local phone number and request. FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKSeptember 8 – Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel Reading: Luke 14:25-33Background on the Gospel Reading: In chapter 14 of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is speaking to people gathered at the table about the difficulties of following him. This group of people is suspicious about Jesus, looking to catch him doing something wrong. Jesus speaks to them in parables, emphasizing that although there is a right way to be a disciple and enter the kingdom of his Father, it is a difficult path to follow. Many, even some of the guests at the table, reject the invitation. So, Jesus turns to the crowds and speaks to them of discipleship. Jesus explains that, when it comes to making a choice for the Kingdom of God, nothing can get in the way. When Jesus describes “hating” one’s father and mother, he is not talking about feelings. Rather, he is emphasizing very strongly that choosing to be a disciple means that everything else—family, money, your own life—must come second. In Matthew’s version of this story (Matthew 10:37), Jesus refers not to “hating” father or mother, but to loving them more than Jesus. Jesus makes it very clear that being a disciple is not easy. It means to bear one’s own cross. These difficult sayings of Jesus are followed by two brief parables (a person constructing a tower and a king marching into battle) that make an obvious point—don’t start what you cannot finish. Discipleship is difficult and is something we can commit to only if we are prepared to put the Kingdom of God before everything else.

September 9 – St. Peter Claver, PriestPeter Claver was born of a distinguished family in Catalonia, Spain. He became a Jesuit in 1604, and left for Colombia in 1610, dedicating himself to the service of black slaves. For thirty-three years he ministered to slaves, caring for the sick and dying, and instructing the slaves through catechists. Through his efforts three hundred thousand souls entered the Church. He is the Patron of African Americans and African Missions.

September 12 –The Most Holy Name of MaryOn this day dedicated to the Holy Name of Mary let us repeat that wonderful prayer of Saint Bernard, responding to Pope Benedict XVI’s invitation to “invite everyone to become a trusting child before Mary, even as the Son of God did. Saint Bernard says, and we say with him: ‘Look to the star of the sea, call upon Mary … in danger, in distress, in doubt, think of Mary, call upon Mary. May her name never be far from your lips, or far from your heart … If you follow her, you will not stray; if you pray to her, you will not despair; if you turn your thoughts to her, you will not err. If she holds you, you will not fall; if she protects you, you need not fear; if she is your guide, you will not tire; if she is gracious to you, you will surely reach your destination”’ (Benedict XVI, address at Heiligenkreuz Abbey, September 9, 2007). — Luciano Alimandi

September 13 – St. John Chrysostom, Bishop & Doctor of the ChurchSt. John Chrysostom, born in Antioch about 347 A.D., was a great genius. His powerful eloquence earned him the surname of Chrysostom, or golden mouthed. With St. Athanasius, St. Gregory Nazianzen and St. Basil, he forms the group of the four great doctors of the Eastern Church. As Archbishop of Constantinople, his courageous stance against the vices of even the wealthy caused him to be exiled several times. As a result, he died in 407, still in exile. In 1204, his body was brought to St. Peter’s in Rome but was returned to the Orthodox on November 27, 2004 by Pope John Paul II. His silver and jewel-encrusted skull is now kept in

the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos in northern Greece and is credited by Christians with miraculous healings. His right hand is also preserved on Mount Athos, and numerous smaller relics are scattered throughout the world.

WORD OF LIFEFor all whose hearts ache from participating in abortion: may they be strengthened to seek the Lord’s compassion, mercy, and healing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We pray to the Lord.

“Throughout salvation history, God has welcomed repentant sinners with special joy. Jesus concludes the parable of the lost sheep with these words: ‘there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance’ (Lk 15:7).”
