WHO IS THE CORNERSTONE?Beloved: Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God, than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit.

STC RIGHT TO LIFE NEWSWould you like to pray for expectant moms?1. 9 MONTHS WITH CHRIST IN THE WOMBFrom March 25th to December 25th, 2020, St. Columbkille will be participating in this Archdiocesan Respect Life Prayer Campaign. The May’s Monthly Reflection is available online at catholiccincinnati.org/ministries-offices/respect-life-2/nine-months-with-christ-in-the-womb/.Week 7 Reflection:The tip of our Lord’s little nose has formed this week, as well as his bottom. He is still very fragile at a length of just under an inch and weighing only one tenth of an ounce. Jesus of the womb Hear our prayers! We are also asking everyone to pray daily our special prayer to Christ in the womb.

“Dear Jesus of the Womb, most fragile child of Mary’s protection, we look to you as the youngest image of perfect innocence. We lift our prayers to you who will save each of our souls. Just as you entered humanity through this most gentle and helpless state, now help us to find your presence in the face of all the gentle and helpless persons of the earth. Bless us with eyes that see you and ears that hear you: in the presence of the poor and the outcast, the hungry and the homeless, the condemned and the war-torn, the elderly and the unborn. May we discover you every day as at Christmas and offer our gifts every day as at Epiphany. This we ask of You and the Father, with your Holy Spirit and in union with Mary your tender home. Amen.”

The Nine Months with Christ App – Now you can have all the materials for the Nine Months with Christ in the Womb Campaign at the tip of your fingers. We have developed an App that walks you through the prayers week-by-week and month-by-month with reminders. Click the APP ICON to the left to download an Android Version from the Google Play Store. We will be debuting on the Apple Store soon as well!2. PRAY FOR MOMS IN NEED (USCCB)Join us in praying for expectant mothers facing difficulties through the intercession of our Blessed Mother! POPE FRANCIS’ MAY PRAYER INTENTIONSFor Deacons - We pray that deacons, faithful in their service to the Word and the poor, may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church.

ANYONE NEED HELP?If you or someone you know needs help with food, rent, or utility payments, please call St. Vincent de Paul Society at 937-382-6851. A telephone volunteer will return your call within two business days to set up an appointment. Thank you so much for your continued support.

THE CORPORAL AND SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

“Often it is the people closest to us who need our help. We should not go out in search of some unknown business to accomplish. It is better to begin with the simplest, which the Lord tells us is the most urgent.” —Pope Francis General Audience (10/12/2016) The Corporal Works of MercyThe Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise; they “are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs” (U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults).FEED THE HUNGRY• Check in with your parish community to see if there are parishioners

who cannot (or should not) go grocery shopping themselves.• Check in with your parish to see if the food pantry is adequately

stocked. • Organize a network of volunteers in each parish/community to grocery shop for parishioners in need, especially the more vulnerable populations in our community.

GIVE DRINK TO THE THIRSTY• Do not purchase or hoard more water than you need. • While

handwashing is vitally important, try not to waste water—in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Christ who do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this necessity.

SHELTER THE HOMELESS• Consider donating toiletries and sanitary items to a local shelter

since those who suffer homelessness—and the facilities that minister to them—are especially vulnerable currently.

• Financially support organizations that are working to support the homeless population in your community.

VISIT THE SICK• While in-person visits are not advisable during this time, please

invest time in reaching out via phone/video call or by sending a letter or card to those who may feel particularly isolated during this time.

• Offer to assist caregivers of chronically sick family members by grocery shopping or cooking for them so they do not have to risk exposure.

• Reach out to health care workers in your community who may be overworked, burdened, or in need of specific support at this time.

VISIT THE PRISONERS• Explore whether your parish or diocese has a prison ministry and, if

so, check whether they need supplies or support.• Given that people in prison can be especially isolated and vulnerable

during this pandemic, consider how to support those who are ministering to them and bringing them the Word of God.

BURY THE DEAD• Now that funerals may be limited or restricted, reach out with

cards or phone calls to those who have recently lost a loved one. •If possible, visit the cemetery to pray for those you have lost—and to ask their intercession on behalf of all those facing death today.

GIVE ALMS TO THE POOR• Reach out to those who may have been especially burdened during

this pandemic, especially those whose occupations make them more vulnerable to economic instability.

• Remember that the lack of public celebration of Masses may result in parishes struggling financially in the next few months; be sure to continue your support and if possible, increase offerings for those who cannot donate due to recent financial hardship or inability to work.

• Remember that Catholic Relief Services continues to serve the most vulnerable and consider donating or praying for them as you are able.

TEN FUN FACTS ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT1. The Holy Spirit Was Involved in Creation:According to Genesis 1:1-2, the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. The phrase “moved upon” here implies the Holy Spirit prepared the land for God’s creation.2. The Holy Spirit Was Involved in Jesus’ Birth: Deuteronomy 32:11 says, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee…” This is talking about the virgin birth or Jesus’ incarnation into the physical world.3. The Holy Spirit Converts Us: It is through the Holy Spirit that Christians are born again. John 3:3 says that a man cannot see the kingdom of God unless he is born again, and this process is made possible by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also crucial to a Christian’s ability to live life as a new creation in Christ.4. The Holy Spirit is a Person: Some religions think of the Holy Spirit as less than a person. However, the Holy Spirit is a vitally important person when it comes to the Christian life. Romans 8:26 talks about how the Holy Spirit intercedes for Christians, which is just one of the many roles the Holy Spirit fulfills.5. The Holy Spirit and Jesus Are Distinct Persons: In Luke 3:21-22, it says the Holy Ghost descended upon Jesus. This shows that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are two different entities. Matthew 28:19 also makes this distinction.6. The Holy Spirit is Divine: The Holy Spirit is God. Acts 5:3-4 proves this fact as Peter refers to the Holy Spirit as God. The Bible in 2 Corinthians 3:17, calls the Holy Spirit Lord, which of course, confirms He is God.7. You Need to Ask for The Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is available to all believers but must be asked for to be received.8. You Can Lose the Holy Spirit: In Psalm 51:11, King David seems to imply that the Holy Spirit could leave him.9. The Holy Spirit Has Always Been Available: David mentions the Holy Spirit as do several other Old Testament passages. Therefore, this implies the Holy Spirit is not a New Testament phenomenon.10. The Holy Spirit Does Not Cause Confusion: God is not the author of the confusion. God wants peace for all.Source: catholicshare.com/10-facts-holy-spirit-may-surprise/#ixzz6LmjrgpDI

WORD OF LIFEMay our elected officials always strive to keep the Lord’s Commandments and work for the protection of human life, from conception to natural death. We pray to the Lord.“As Americans, as Catholics and as pastors of our people, we write therefore today to call our fellow citizens back to our country's founding principles, and most especially to renew our national respect for the rights of those who are unborn, weak, disabled and terminally ill. Real freedom rests on the inviolability of every person as a child of God.”Source: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops “Living the Gospel of Life,” © 1998 USCCB

SAINTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEKMay 18th – St. John I (c. 470 - 526): Pope John I inherited the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. Italy had been ruled for 30 years by an emperor who espoused the heresy, though he treated the empire’s Catholics with toleration. His policy changed at about the time the young John was elected pope. When the eastern emperor began imposing severe measures on the Arians of his area, the western emperor forced John to head a delegation to the East to soften the measures against the heretics. Little is known of the manner or outcome of the negotiations—designed to secure continued toleration of Catholics in the West. On his way home, John was imprisoned at Ravenna because the emperor had begun to suspect that John’s friendship with his eastern rival might lead to a conspiracy against his throne. Shortly after his imprisonment, John died, apparently from the treatment

he received in prison. John’s body was transported to Rome and he was buried in the Basilica of St. Peter.

May 19th – St. Theophilus of Corte (1676 – 1749): Theophilus was born in Corsica of rich and noble parents. As a young man, he entered the Franciscans and soon showed his love for solitude and prayer. After admirably completing his studies, he was ordained and assigned to a retreat house near Subiaco. Inspired by the austere life of the Franciscans there, he founded other such houses in Corsica and Tuscany. Over the years, he became famous for his preaching as well as his missionary efforts. Though he was always somewhat sickly, Theophilus generously served the needs of God’s people in the confessional, in the sickroom, and at the graveside.

May 20th– Saint Bernardine of Siena (1380 – 1444): He was the greatest preacher of his time, journeying across Italy, calming strife-torn cities, attacking the paganism he found rampant, attracting crowds of 30,000, following Saint Francis of Assisi’s admonition to preach about “vice and virtue, punishment and glory.” When he was 20, the plague was at its height in his hometown of Siena. Sometimes as many as 20 people died in one day at the hospital. Bernardine offered to run the hospital and, with the help of other young men, nursed patients there for four months. He escaped the plague but was so exhausted that a fever confined him for several months. At 22, he entered the Franciscan Order and was ordained two years later. For almost a dozen years he lived in solitude and prayer, but his gifts ultimately caused him to be sent to preach. He always traveled on foot, sometimes speaking for hours in one place, then doing the same in another town. Especially known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, Bernardine

devised a symbol – IHS, the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek—in Gothic letters on a blazing sun.

May 21st – Saint Cristóbal Magallanes and Companions: Like Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro, SJ, Cristóbal and his 24 companion martyrs lived under a very anti-Catholic government in Mexico, one determined to weaken the Catholic faith of its people. Churches, schools, and seminaries were closed; foreign clergy were expelled. Cristóbal established a clandestine seminary at Totatiche, Jalisco. He and the other priests were forced to minister secretly to Catholics during the presidency of Plutarco Calles (1924-28). All these martyrs, except three, were diocesan priests. David, Manuel, and Salvador were laymen who died with their parish priest, Luis Batis. They all belonged to the Cristero movement, pledging their allegiance to Christ and to the Church that he established, to spread the Good News in society—even if Mexico’s leaders had made it a crime to receive baptism or celebrate the Mass. These martyrs did not die as a single group but over 22 years’ time in eight Mexican states, with Jalisco and Zacatecas having the largest number. They were beatified in 1992 and canonized eight years later.

May 22nd – Saint Rita of Cascia: Like Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rita of Cascia was a wife, mother, widow, and member of a religious community. Her holiness was reflected in each phase of her life. Born at Roccaporena in central Italy, Rita wanted to become a nun but was pressured at a young age into marrying a harsh and cruel man. During her 18-year marriage, she bore and raised two sons. After her husband was killed in a brawl and her sons had died, Rita tried to join the Augustinian nuns in Cascia. Unsuccessful at first because she was a widow, Rita eventually succeeded. Over the years, her austerity, prayerfulness, and charity became legendary. When she developed wounds on her forehead, people quickly associated them with the wounds from Christ’s crown of thorns. She meditated frequently on Christ’s passion. Her care for the sick nuns was especially loving. She also counseled lay people who came to her monastery.

ADOPTION: THE LOVING AND CARING OPTIONIn the U.S., there are approximately two million couples waiting to adopt. Clearly, this is tragic. Many good, loving families are waiting throughout our nation for a baby whom they want to cherish, value, and raise for the rest of that baby’s life.Adoption – especially the adoption of a newborn baby – almost always involves a loving, excited couple who have dreamed for years of holding and caring for their own special treasure.Do mothers considering abortion realize that families go on waiting lists to adopt newborn babies? Do they realize that some couples wait years to adopt the baby they have desperately waited to hold in their arms? Do mothers realize how many experienced parents with wisdom, resources, and plenty of love are reaching out to adopt another child –- no matter his or her race, gender, or disability? We need to let mothers know that they can handpick their babies’ adoptive families. They can choose an open adoption, where they see their babies at certain times throughout the year. They can choose a partially open adoption, where they receive photos and updates about their children’s lives. Or they can choose a closed adoption and give their babies completely over to their adoptive families. We must let expectant mothers know that adoption is the loving, caring option.
