XVII Sunday in Ordinary Time July 28, 2019

Preparing this column in the teeth of the oppressive heat wave we’ve all experienced has led me to reflect on what we take for granted and what effect the ordinary circumstances of life can have on our spirit and our body. At the height of the heat wave, I seem to spend most of the time inside hiding from the heat. For most of us, things seem to slow down in the summer months. This is a sort of biological necessity; we may not be able to do what we want to do because of the season of the year. The slower pace of things can be a spiritual benefit in that we may be more disposed to engage in reflection, pick up a book or even do some writing on your own. Last week we heard the story of Martha and Mary and the importance of con-templation and reflection. This week, as we hear from the Abraham cycle and Jesus’ continuing journey as well, we are given a twofold lesson on generosity and prayer; God’s generosity and our need for generosity and prayer. The great prayer of discipleship is given to us this week. Did you ever stop to reflect on the lan-guage the Church uses in the Liturgy to introduce the Lord’s Prayer? At the Savior’s command and formed by Divine teaching, we dare to say… (Emphasis mine) Why do we dare to say? If you dare to say some-thing or dare to do something the saying or the doing evidently involves a risk. What risk is there in praying the Lord’s prayer? Plenty, if you take it seriously. St. Teresa of Avila said that she had trouble getting past the first two words, so tremendously signif-icant are they. With them we immediately place ourselves in a relationship with God. The identity of Father in the culture of Jesus’ day was not a Disney Daddy who makes all things wonderful. He was a figure to be revered and obeyed; close to his children and their protector and never to be taken for granted. The Father’s name is hallowed, holy. The sacred name of God is to be honored in our spoken and written words. God’s name sadly is all too often used as an exclamation to indicate surprise, frustration, or even anger. Jews have such reverence for God’s name that they never use it in either written or spoken form. They employ all sorts of circumlocutions to refer to God but do not use the name of God because they recognize its sanctity We pray for God’s Kingdom to come and that God’s will be done here as it in in heaven. The King-dom is already here but not yet fully formed. As disciples we are charged to continue to collaborate with the Grace of the Spirit and the teaching of the Gospel to show the Kingdom more clearly in our world; a world that in so many ways is more concerned about “Things-doms” than Kingdoms. As far as God’s will being done here as in heaven; how is God’s will done in heaven? It is done perfectly. How is God’s will done here? How is God’s will accomplished in and through your life? There’s a source of reflection. Like all children who go to their father, we go to ours with our needs – our daily bread and for-giveness. The bread is clearly an intentional connection with the Eucharist; that food which nourishes and strengthens. The forgiveness is nuanced. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. We want God to treat us as we treat others. We are asking that God forgive us our sins as we forgive others. But what if we are not forgiving of others? In effect we are giving God permission not to forgive us; actually, we are asking God not to forgive us. In the prayer we are asking God to be God and at the same time we are being reminded that God is calling us to be like God. God is going to be God; there is no option. However, we do have an option, we can say no. And sadly, sometimes we do. By the time you are reading this the temperatures will have dropped and we will all probably feel a wee bit better not dealing with the burden and cost, personal and pecuniary, of the excessive temperatures. The cost of Discipleship, however, remains, in season and out. The next time when you prayer the Lord’s prayer, try to remember and understand more clearly with whom you are speaking and what you are saying. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

SOCIAL SERVICES

Our daughter Grace is our angel. Grace has been at St. Ed-mond’s Home for Children since she was 3 years old, and it’s really been a blessing to our family. They have a very caring and spiritual world where they take care of God’s most fragile children. The children at St. Edmond’s are severely mentally and physically handicapped. Our Grace is also blind, so there are a multitude of different disabilities that these children have. Grace receives around-the-clock care which has not only saved her life many times, but also helped her grow up to be the per-son she is today. Grace wasn’t expected to live very long and here she is almost 24 years old. She’s able to talk and walk and do much more than was ever expected. That’s really because of the love and care that they provide at St. Edmond’s. St. Ed-mond’s has been the ultimate place to take care of Grace and has enabled our family to grow spiritually, accept the trials and tribulations of life, and to do our best as a unit. St. Edmond’s is a wonderful example of the many programs and facilities that the Archdiocese of Philadelphia has through the Catholic Social Services programs that help the less fortunate in our society. St Edmond’s is carrying out the mission of what Jesus taught us: to care for those in need. These programs would not be possible without the support of the Catholic Charities Appeal.

Be-sides gifts of cash, donors to the 2019 Catholic Charities Appeal may contribute in many other ways, each offering tax advantages according to their circumstances: For more information about any of the ways you can support the 2019 Catholic Charities Appeal, please call The Catho-lic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia at 215.587.5650 or email [email protected].

Summer 2019 Dear St. Cornelius Church Thank you for St. Cornelius’ generous gift on June 9, 2019, of $95.00 to Kennett Area Community Services. We thank you and your parishioners for conducting a Food Drive/Fund Drive on our behalf. Your food drive collected 2,212 pounds of food and $95.00 in donation. Your willingness to help provide individuals and families with the basic necessities of food and shelter makes all the difference for our community. Because of you… 395 families receive food through the Food Cupboard each month. Because of you… KACS has intervened to help 1,200 individuals in financial crisis this past year to prevent eviction or utility shut off. Because of you… 45 households who have experienced homelessness over the past six months have secured permanent housing and found support from a community that cares. Now, more than ever, your support of KACS is invaluable. Thank you for all you do for the local families. You truly embody our mission of Serving People in Their Time of Need. Yours in service, Melanie Weiler Executive Director

The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant per-son/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and example of the Lord Jesus:

"Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be con-soled" (Matthew 5:4). A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation minis-try. The next session will be August 17, 2019. Open Consolation Sessions will be held in the Bethany Room of the Church the third Saturday of the month from 3:30 to 5:00pm. Please con-tact Joan Holliday at (610) 717-2180.

Family Promise Volunteers Help Homeless Families

“For there will never cease to be poor in the land. There-fore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to

your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:11

St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise ministry in southern Chester County. Our volunteers spend time with the most vulner-able in our neighboring community and testify to growing in Christ-like compassion through this outreach ministry. Our next week to serve is this week, July 28th through August 4th. We warmly welcome new volunteers and if you can’t volunteer, we would appre-ciate donations to support the food purchases for the meals that we pre-pare when we have our time to volun-teer. To sign-up to volunteer or con-tribute contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214

WEDDING MINISTRY

We are looking for volunteers to help with wedding rehearsals and/or weddings. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings at 6pm and weddings are on Saturdays and sometimes on Friday evening. As a growing parish, we are celebrating more and more weddings and are in need of some help. We would also like to have a group of adults who would per-form the ministry of altar server just like we do for funerals. Training will be provided and a schedule set up for coverage of rehearsals and weddings. Please call the Parish Life Center to volunteer at (610) 459-2502.

It can be difficult to find a Catholic Church while traveling and vacationing in unfamiliar locations. WWW.MassTimes.org is a convenient way to locate a church so you can continue to receive Holy Eucharist and celebrate Mass.

St. Ignatius of Loyola Feast Day: August 31

Born in his family's ancestral Basque cas-tle, Inigo Lopez de Loyola was a page in Castile and a soldier wounded in battle before he experienced a personal conver-sion that has had profound consequences

for the church ever since. While convalescing, he read about Christ and the saints, made a long retreat at Manresa and journeyed to Jerusalem. He studied for 10 years in Bar-celona and Paris, where he became Ignatius and was the center of a group of like-minded men. They founded the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, to be active missionaries and meet the challenges of the Reformation. Ignatius, superior general of the new order also wqrote "spiritual Exercises" which is still a popular guide. He is the patron saint of re-treats and soldiers.

It was great meeting the families who came to the principal meet and greet last week. Thank you for mak-ing me feel so welcome at St. Cornelius. The faculty and staff are working hard preparing the building for the 2019-20 school year. The plans for the middle school Leadership Academy are coming togeth-er. Do not hesitate to contact me over the summer to dis-cuss the coming school year. God Bless, Mr. Touey
