III Sunday of Easter April 26, 2020

Luke 24: 13 – 35, The Disciples on the Road to Emmaus is a story of a journey within a journey within a journey. All of Luke’s Gospel takes place within a journey theme. Jesus travels from up in the northern re-gions of Galilee to the south in Jerusalem, a distance of just under 100 miles. In the third gospel Jesus makes the one long trip and, on the way, He meets people. Everyone he meets is changed because of the encounter; some for the better because they accept who He is and what He says and some for the worse because they re-ject Him and His word. These two disciples, Cleopas and his traveling companion, have evidently been with Jesus through the Public Ministry. But simply because they were present does not necessarily mean that they understood Him or His message. They articulate their disappointment to this stranger who happens to fall into their company, expressing their hopes that He …

who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.

But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel… Jesus castigates them and with characteristic gentleness begins to teach them using Sacred Scripture. This journey is presented by the evangelist along the same structure of the Mass. On their journey Jesus engag-es in the Liturgy of the Word as we have at Mass. The Word is proclaimed then the homily is given, both an exhortative and educational effort. As the preacher unpacks its meaning we are fed by The Word. The second part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, begins when Jesus decides to remain with them. Then, seated at the table, He engages those same actions as he did at every Eucharistic encounter in the Public Ministry and at the Last Supper: He takes, He blesses, He breaks and He distributes. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him… They asked him to stay with them, remain with them, abide with them. That is what Jesus continues to do for us; He remains with us; He abides with us in and through the Eucharist. Among the last of his Apostolic Letters, Pope St. John Paul II wrote Mane Nobiscum Domine, Stay with us Lord.

The image of the disciples on the way to Emmaus can serve as a fitting guide for … living out the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Amid our questions and difficulties, and even our bitter dis-appointments, the divine Wayfarer continues to walk at our side, opening to us the Scriptures and leading us to a deeper understanding of the mysteries of God. When we meet him fully, we will pass from the light of the Word to the light streaming from the “Bread of life”, the supreme fulfilment of his promise to “be with us always, to the end of the age” (cf. Mt 28:20). (Mane Nobiscum Domine § 2)

Our journeys continue even in the midst of the forced isolation, quarantining and social distance we maintain. I have had people contact me and express their longing, their ardent desire to once again celebrate the Eucharist and receive Holy Communion. There is nothing else quite like it. Perhaps through this deprava-tion we will become more aware and more grateful for those elements of our lives that we, for whatever rea-son, have to come to underappreciate or even taken for granted. So many of us have been required to be with the most important people in our lives, our families. Perhaps we can now come to respect those elements and people with a renewed effort. The word respect comes from the Latin – respicere, which means to look at a second time. This requires some reflection. Reflect on the importance of the people in your life. Reflect on the importance on the Eucharist in your life. Be grateful for both. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant person/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and exam-

ple of the Lord Jesus: "Blessed are they who mourn;

they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4).

A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation ministry. At this time, due to the coronavirus we are all strug-gling with, we need to put our ministry on hold until a later date can be arranged. When that date can be de-termined, we will inform our current participants. Watch this space for updates.

The SCLS is well under way for 2020. Our gatherings have looked at the works of Graham Green’s The Power and the Glory and selected short stories by Flannery O’Connor and two works by C. S. Lewis Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters. For our next symposium on writers we will look at a writer who has had im-mense influence on Catholic so-cial causes. Founder of the Cath-olic Worker Movement, and con-vert to Catholicism Dorothy Day became a voice for the poor and homeless through her non-violent activism. Her autobiography, The Long Loneliness, I think you will find both fascinating and inspiring as she recounts her journey from Greenwich Village, NY to her conversion to Catholicism. Normally we meet on the second Sunday of the month, however, following the directives of state and local offi-cials, the CDC, Archbishop Pérez and good common sense we must postpone our usual gatherings until further notice. I would encourage you to take this time and enjoy our se-lected reading for when we next gather.

Grounded by our belief in Jesus Christ and Catholic teaching& Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) fulfills the commitment of the U.S. Catholic bishops to protect the life and dignity of the human person. The Committee on Migration serves and advocates for refu-gees, asylees, migrants, unaccompanied children, and victims of human trafficking. Did you know USCCB MRS provides foster care services to unaccompanied, refugee, and immigrant children? In 2019, USCCB's Unaccompanied Child (UC) and Unaccompanied Refugee Minor (URM) Net-work worked to serve and place 552 UCs and URMs from 25 different countries into appropriate care.
