I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may

have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to

grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of

Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—

that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of

In the first century Jesus of Nazareth inspired a

lives, so we can bear witness to his way of love in and for

the world?

The deep roots of our Christian tradition may offer just

such a path. For centuries, monastic communities have

shaped their lives around rhythms and disciplines for

following Jesus together. Such a pattern is known as a

“Rule of Life.” The framework you now hold - The Way

of Love: Practices for Jesus-Centered Life — outlines

a Rule for the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.

Bishop Haynes to Begin Authorizing

Churches to Re-gather for Worship Diocesan eNews - June 16, 2020

Most recently, “the medical/legal subgroup of the

Advisory Panel for Re-Gathering for Worship in

the Diocese of Southern Virginia advised Bishop

Haynes that according to the Virginia Department

of Health, the data now supports a 14-day decline

in new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, deaths,

and percent positivity. Bishop Haynes, therefore, is

now ready to sign re-gathering applications that

would authorize worship according to Phase 1

guidelines. In doing so, churches are reminded to

submit their applications to the Diocesan office

and that re-gathering for worship is dependent on

the clergy's and vestry's readiness to proceed with

worship. Episcopalians in Southern Virginia are

also advised to attend worship only if they feel

they can do so safely.

May God continue to bless us as the Church in a

time when the world needs us to be the Church.”

The Rev. M. Sue Reid St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church welcomed The Rev. M. Sue Reid as one of its supply priest, while Fr. Ramsey was on

sabbatical. She served as the officiant and preacher at the church from May 31 – June 28, 2020.

Reverend Margaret Sue Reid is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City (Master of Sacred Music)

and Virginia Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity). Before coming to St. Cyprian’s, she served in many capacities in

the Diocese of Southern Virginia, including Liaison for the Diaconate and Chaplain for two Deacons Schools. Reverend

Reid has been a rector of two parishes and Canon to the Ordinary for Education and Spiritual Development in the Diocese

of Indianapolis.

She is presently a resident of Williamsburg, Virginia. Sue is married to Jon Strandberg. They have no children but share

their home with two black cats and a border collie/Labrador mix rescue dog. During an interview, Reverend Reid

responded to the questions below.

How long have you been in the ministry?

“I was ordained a deacon at the Cathedral in Louisville, Kentucky in June 1976. Women couldn't yet be legally ordained

priest in the Episcopal Church. Permission to change the Canons of the Episcopal Church came three months later in

September at the General Convention in Minneapolis and regular/legal ordinations of women began on January 1, 1977.

In June of 1977, I was priested in Owensboro, Kentucky. I served in Owensboro for about a year and a half; then as an

interim in Louisville, Kentucky for another year and a half. Next, I was an associate at St. Stephen's on the campus of

Ohio State and later a rector of a parish on the east side of Columbus before moving to Indianapolis. We moved again to

Seattle, Washington before relocating to Williamsburg, Virginia.”

Where did you start out?

“After high school in Louisville, I attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana as an Applied Organ major and

then went onto Union Seminary in New York City. First, I received a degree in Sacred Music and went on to work

towards a master of divinity. I worked for a year in Louisville as a house parent at a state institution for “pre-delinquent”

teens before finishing my Master of Divinity degree at Virginia Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia.”

What (favorite things) do you look for in a parish?

“People who show they really care about each other and at the same time are willing to welcome in newcomers. I love to

sing, and I value congregations that share their faith in music.”

What has been your most rewarding or enjoyable part of the ministry?

“Sharing key moments in people's lives from birth to death, marriages, and illnesses is both an honor and a gift.”

Hobbies?

“Cooking; walks in the Historic Triangle; travel; learning the history of where I live; and serving as a guide at Bruton

Parish Church and the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (especially the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art

Museum)”

What do you think is the greatest challenge facing the Episcopal Church during this COVID-19 pandemic?

“Reminding ourselves that the Church is alive and well even though we're physically apart as congregations… Too often

we're so attached to our buildings that we lose sight of Paul's imagery of the Body of Christ that lives whether or not we're

in a building.”

Athletes Share Messages to Keep Us #HEALTHYTogether

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and

WHO (World Health Organization) launched a

partnership with the United Nations to encourage

individuals and communities around the world to

be #HEALTHYTogether. The three partners

and Olympic athletes will spotlight the global

collaboration needed to stay healthy and reduce

the spread and impact of COVID -19.

Olympic athletes will help deliver important

public health information, to inspire people to

adopt or continue behaviors that will curtail the

pandemic more provide information that

promotes physical and mental health. The

partnership kicked off June 23, 2020 with

Olympians around the world showcasing various

exercises to stay healthy during this time.

A WHO survey showed that many people who

had severe COVID-19 disease were already living

with or at risk for non-communicable diseases

(NCDs). The results emphasize the importance of

maintaining a healthy lifestyle including being

physically active, having a healthy diet, and

avoiding tobacco and alcohol.

“We are pleased to partner with the International

Olympic Committee to spread important health

messages that will save lives. Olympians will

help us advocate for healthier populations to

ensure that people are as resilient as our health

systems must be to fight COVID-19,”said

Dr.Tedros Adhanom, Ghebreyeus, Director

General, WHO.

Over the past six months, the COVID-19

pandemic has impacted every corner of the globe

and every aspect of people’s lives. The world is

looking for global institutions to work together

and for leaders to deliver reliable, credible

information from sources they trust. Olympic

athletes are symbols of strength that can act as

trusted messengers for this information.

IOC President Thomas Bach said, “Sport can

save lives. We have seen over the last few

months just how important sport and physical

activity are for health and well-being. And

working together with the WHO and the

United Nations we can take another step

together. We will ask our Olympic athletes to

help share the information and best practice

that the world needs now.”

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the

United Nations, added “During this time of

unprecedented challenges and change – from

the COVID-19 pandemic to the ongoing

struggle for racial and social justice, to the

climate crisis – there has never been a greater

need for global solidarity and hope. The

Olympic movement and its athletes have

always brought out the best in humanity, and

the United Nations is pleased to work with the

International Olympic Committee and the

World Health Organization in calling on

people everywhere to unite and be

#HEALTHYTogether.”

The global partnership will act locally, through

the voices of Olympic athletes – voices that

symbolize perseverance, dedication and

endurance – qualities all individuals need

during this public health challenges. Using

digital platforms, WHO will work with athletes

to bring tailored health messages to people

who are living through various stages of the

pandemic.

As COVID-19 forces changes to our daily

routines and lives – from how we interact with

others to how we move and exercise – we need

to pay attention to our own mental and

physical health and help others who may need

extra support. By working together, the aim of

the partnership on Olympic Day and every day

is to stay Healthy Together.

NEXT VESTRY MEETING

Our next Vestry meeting will be held on

Tuesday, July 14, 2020. Please continue to share

your comments, questions, observations, and

suggestions with members of the Vestry. We

thank the Vestry for their hard work on behalf of

the congregation at St. Cyprian’s.

PHONE MINISTRY-STAYING

IN TOUCH

Jesus told Peter, “Feed my sheep!” There are lots

of ways we can “feed” one another, but one of

the best ways is through conversation. Since we

can't “be” together for worship services or for

Coffee Hour, the Vestry has helped us stay

connected and perhaps even helped us get to

know each other better.

If you are an active parishioner at St. Cyprian's,

you should have gotten at least one call from a

vestry member during the month...and perhaps

more than one. Each vestry person has a list of

people to contact, especially if we have a special

event coming up, or a cancellation of a planned

program, for any reason. The Vestry Calling List

was originally set-up to notify parishioners

regarding inclement weather scenarios or

emergency type issues.

The intent now is for us to reconnect with each

other and catch-up just like we're accustomed to

doing after church. We want members to know

that we are here for you and that you are indeed

in our thoughts and prayers. We also hope that

our church members feel they are kept well-

informed through the announcements in the

Sunday bulletin as well as the monthly

We’re taking a break from the 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday School during the summer.

Information regarding the fall Sunday School schedule will be announced at a later date.

The Vestry will be soon appointing the Health and Safety Officer. This individual will work with the

Vestry and Rector to oversee our compliance with health and safety guidelines as we prepare for re-

gathering for public worship. More information forthcoming.

Please consider donating “Altar Flowers” in memory of or thanksgiving for a loved one, or to

commemorate a life event. St. Cyprian’s receives flower arrangements each week from a local florist

and gives parishioners the opportunity to take on the cost in exchange for a memoriam. After the

Sunday service, these flowers may then be delivered to people on the church’s prayer list.

Parishioners are asked to cover altar flowers for any Sunday throughout the year. An individual or

two families may share the cost. To donate flowers, please contact Eleanor Pritchett

Episcopal Church and mail it to the church or drop it off at the Parish Office. Thank you for your

CERTIFICATE OF LAY DELEGATES AND ALTERNATE

This year’s elected delegates are Jean H. Carnegie and Renee Escoffery-Torres. Mark Farquharson will

serve as the alternate delegate. Elected delegates and alternate will serve for an entire conciliar year beginning

July 1, 2020 and ending June 30, 2021. This term includes eligibility to vote at any Pre-Council Convocation

meetings in January, Annual Council in February, and any other Special Council or other called meetings that

may occur during this period.

BAG LUNCHES-LANGLEY VILLAGE St. Cyprian’s has been asked to resume its support of bag lunches for the seniors at Langley Village. Every fifth

Saturday, ECW’s H.E.L.P. Committee prepares lunches to be delivered to Langley Village. We are scheduled to

donate lunches to the seniors on August 29, 2020 and October 31, 2020. Please contact Eleanor Pritchett if you
