DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS

For the sake of safety, we ask that in the mornings you drop off your chil-dren in the appropriate sections of the school yard and leave them with our staff. Please make sure that your child is dropped off no earlier than 8:15 a.m. Supervision in our school yard begins at 8:15a.m. This will help the students develop routines and it will also help our staff ensure a safe school yard.

If you are picking up your child(ren) early from school, please come to the office and sign out the student. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Author Visit for our Intermediate Grades

Author, illustrator, and former sports broadcaster Kevin Sylvester was in the school on Friday October 28 and gave the grade 6,7,and 8 classes a great presentation about his books, what it is like to be an author, and illustrator, as well as some funny stories about his characters. Students from grade 3 and up were anxious to buy his books and get his autograph. We are looking forward to having him at the school again for a presentation for the junior grades in the new year.

Drop The Worry Ball – Dr. Alex Russell presentation.

On Thursday October 27, Dr. Alex Russell, author of Drop The Worry Ball, visited St. Denis to speak to par-ents. Dr. Russell is an enthusiastic and engaging speaker who touched on a number of key points related to chil-dren’s anxiety and building resiliency in our students. By all accounts, the parents in attendance found this to be a very informative information session and discussion. Copies of his book are available on loan from Mr. Comacchio. If you would like to purchase a copy

Cross Country News:

We had an excellent season enjoying those early morning runs down at the boardwalk with the sun rising over Lake Ontario. Congratulations to a great effort by everyone at the divi-sional, regional, and then city races. Runners were led by a committed group of grade 8 students who set a strong pace as we ran against the stopwatch and then tried to beat our personal best. Thank you to the many teachers who supervised and encour-

aged our runners to run their best. See you all next fall down at the boardwalk!

WE DAY

On October 19, St. Denis attended We Day 2016. The show was a day-long experience, full of motivation. Throughout the day we learned im-portant lessons as well as inspiring stories. The speakers, such as Craig and Marc Kielburger (who founded the organization) talked about how they took ME and changed it to WE.

There were performances, speakers, announcers, music, and happiness during all of We Day. Fa-mous people such as Lilly Singh, Jordan Smith, Hedley, Macklemore, Jason Derulo, and Gord Downie per-formed. Some of the speakers were Penny Oleksiak, Spencer West, Ja-cob Tremblay, Paula Abdul, Marga-ret Trudeau, and Michael “Pinball” Clemons, they gave inspiring life stories and showed us that anyone can make a difference and change the world.

The time we had listening to the speakers was an experience un-like any other. We as a community celebrated for the work we’ve done and things we hope to do so WE can change the world. They drilled a few sayings into our brains so we always would remember. Some of the quotes were “WE are Canada”, “WE are Change”, and “Girl Love” (changing girl on girl hate), these had a big impacted because each had a big meaning.

We learned so much at We Day. As each person told talked to the audience about how they made a difference, or how the got back up on their feet even when it felt like the world just kept pushing them

down, you felt their pain, perse-verance, and passion. Each and everyone person in that stadium (of 20 000 people) has a some-thing to say, and wants to make the world a better place for all of us.
