CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something be-hind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything be-hind, risking it all for God’s promise. Je-sus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave be-hind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These ques-tions are at the heart of the Lenten jour-ney of conversion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HEALTH PRECAUTIONS The Archdiocese of Chicago is changing how priests and parishioners interact during Mass to limit exposure to coronavirus amid a possible outbreak. The new guidelines eliminate the use of the chalice during communion and suspend handshaking during the sign of peace. Parishioners are also being advised against holding hands during the Lord’s Prayer, and to avoid using the Holy Water fonts. Priests and other church staff have been told to wash their hands before Mass and before distributing communion.

A Momentous Month - What Now? February was momentous, with the decision made to unify St. Dismas and St. Anastasia under a combined parish. A decision significant especially in its bearing on the future of the Catholic church in Waukegan. There are changes forthcoming, as we determine the details of the unification with St. Anastasia, and we collaborate more with the churches of Most Blessed Trinity, the other Catholic parish in Waukegan. There's much work to be done. Thankfully we are in the capable hands of our pastor, Fr. Xamie, as he guides us through the process.
So what now? What do we do in the meantime? Pray! And be prepared to assist in any way if tapped on the shoulder by Fr. Xamie.
More importantly, parish life proceeds as usual while the unification process unfolds. Mass schedules continue, as do weddings, baptisms and funerals. Children still need educating; the sick, elderly, and poor need to be tended. The needs of our congregation and the community continue as before. This means we must also continue to be good stewards of our faith, and love God by loving and serving one another. None of this stops because of the unification of two churches.
You've heard it before! It is up to each and every one of us to be good stewards by sharing our time, talent, and treasure. We've just completed the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign, the largest fundraising effort of the year. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your treasure! Your time and your talent is also much needed! There are ministries that are shorthanded, and can use more volunteers. There are the obvious ones visible to all because they play a prominent role during mass (Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Altar Server, Choir). But there are less obvious roles because they don't get the same attention (Minister of Care, Adoration Attendant, Traveling Madonna Host, Catechist, etc... to name a few).
In future bulletin articles, I will focus and highlight various volunteer roles that need staffing. By providing you with a description of the role, and the tasks and responsibilities involved, hopefully this will reduce any apprehension, and perhaps spark an interest in volunteering for these roles. Please consider sharing your time and your talent!
Prayerfully yours, Mark Matias

MARRIAGE Contact the Rectory at least six months in advance to allow time for the paperwork and preparation necessary for marriage in the Church.
PARISHIONERS When moving in or out of St. Dismas Parish, please notify the rectory to update our records.
