$t . Wmnhna : a Chamber Onera in T m Act?
by Bruce Nicol
Abstract of Thesis for Doctor of Music Degree, 1997.
University of Toronto, Faculty of Music.
This is a chamber opera in two acts for five singer /actors,
£ive instrumentalists, and electro-acoustic segments p r e -
recorded on a compact d i x . The duration of ~ h e work is i40
minutes.
St. Dymphna !ca. 7th century! is the p a t r o n saint of the
i n sane and excessively nervous. AccountS of her l i f e and
martyrdom, along with the miracles and healings from mental
illness attributed to her were first documenced i n the 7 l c h
century in the Belgian t o m of Gheel, the site of her
martyrdom, and the centre of her c u l t , which became ?IerL.
popular in the late middle ages. A list of t h e s o u r c e
materials is included here. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The narrative of this opera works on two l e v d s . In act
1, t he s t o r y of St. Dymphna is told along conventional lines,
beginning with her childhooa, moving chrough the death of her
mother, her fatherJs attempt to seduce and rnarry her, and ner
flight with the Jester and Gerebern from her father's I r i s h
kingdom. This linear narrative is interspersed with
vignettes of madness and medical doctors. The musical
characterizations are less conventional, relying more on
cues.
In act II the linear and non-linear narrative lines
converge. The insane charactêrs £ r o m act I begin interacting
with the characters of the Dymphna story. The doctors'
interventions are broader in scope, and more ruthless in
nature, particularly as the King's insanity grows. In the
final scene St. Dymphna subdues the doctor while her secure
and affirming music draws the fragmented sounds of the
mentally il1 characters towards it, creating a kind of
wounded unity out of disparate material.

Prepared Sarnple Keyboard:
This instrument (eg. Kurzweill 2000. EMU MPS. etc.). involves the use of a synthesizer and keyboard which can store and play back digitally sampled sounds. If the memory capacity of this drvice is insufficient. then another external sound source rnust be usrd. such as a cornputer or a rack mounred synthesizer. Addi tionall y. the player should also have an effects processor.
The information in the prepared sample keyboard part pertaining to banks ( h i ~ k . ) and MIDI channels (ch.) reflects the composer's own keyboard set up, which incudcs SamplcCell II. an EhlU Proteus keyboard with sustain pedal, and an Alesis Midiverb 4 effects procrssor. The composer has compiled the needed sarnples and created the required instruments which can be accessrd by the banks and channels indicatcd in the score. .A rable of thcse banks and instrumenrs. and where thry are required. is provided in appendix 1 ar the end of the score. The composer can provide the player with a 135hlb EZ drive cartridgr containing al1 the samples and instruments. Otheruise. the player is free to create his or her own instruments. braring in rnind that the sounds should be compatible with the C.D. cues.
Four different styles of notation are used.
In example 1. the rectangle indicatrs the rrgion of the keyboard which. when playrd. will produce the sound described adjacent to it.
In example 2. the rectangle indicatrs the region of the keyboard which will producr the single sustained pitch. as shown by conventional notation.
In example 3, playing the note indicated will produce the notated unpitchrd sounds.
In example 4. conventional notation produces the pitches and rhythms indicated.

C.D. (Compact Disc)
25 obligatory electro-acoustic cues recorded by the composer are provided on a conventional compact disc. The prepared sample keyboard player will also operate the C.D. playback machine. This involves the following procedures:
1) prior to the entry of the C.D. cue, locate the appropriate cue number on the C.D.
2 ) push "play" and allow the C.D. timer to run till 4 seconds.
3) push "pause".
4) at the point where the C.D cue cntrrs. rrlrasr the "pause" function. and set the appropriate volume level.
5 ) monitor the volume level as the c u l plays.
6 ) fade and /or stop the cue as indicated in the score. move to the next cue number on the CD.. and repeat steps 2 and 3.
N.B. In al1 25 C.D cues, the sound does not begin till 5 seconds after the cue number. In other words, each cul begins with 5 seconds of silence. Accessing the cues by conventional search and play commands can take the machine some time. By using the pause function as described abovr. the accessing of the cues is more irnrnediate and reliable.
Al1 curs are 10 - 15% percent longer than needed. This allows for some flexibility in the stage and musical direction.
A table of al1 C D . cues is provided in Appendix II at the end of the score.

Weeellll. a few years back. he died too. Look King. Dymphna's just a child The sexual world is for the wild Beneath the flesh and for the unveiled mind Not the frightened and refined.

Scene 4: The Inn
An Inn: Dymphna and Jester enter. exhausted. The landlady enters. dressed in hospital garb. bringing a plate of food. a bottle of wine and two chalices.
Landlady: Your faces are new. Where are you from?
Jester: A country that is not. rny good lady. For the head of it turns As leaves in a gale And when the head spins The form falls So we sail.
Landlady: My soul. that sounds like a country 1 know.
Jester: 1s that so? 1s it near?
Landlady: As close as your feet. It's Brabant here! You've travelled into madness and paradise both.
Shy Man: (enters, walks across the stage) Honey. I'rn home. Honey. . .
Landlady: There's the Shy Man. from the ship the Headless Whale Who sank beside his crew upon the rocks The sea was red and rose as from a wound We dressed his corpse on this table Burned letters to his love refused He lead a lonesome life. my soul! He drifts back here, a ghost in Sunday best Although no ladies upstairs let him in.
(Dymphna takes the bottle of wine and pours it into two chalices. giving one to the kster.)
(On another part of the stage. Bum Woman sits in a chair. Doctor. standing over her. performs a venesection. opening a vein in her arm for letting blood. Bum woman screarns. then cries softly undemeath the following dialogue.)
Landlady: And that's Our town crier Who tried to burn her husband numb with drink. Instead she lost her pretty children too
Who ran to Save their father from the flames. Now she walks in fire in her mind And cries across the hours without release.
Jester: (gagging) Lady. this wine. . .
Landlady: We're lunatics and ghosts here But at least we're not alone. Brabant is a paradise We abide each other's vice.
Jes ter: It's blood.
(We see that Dymphna's arm is bloody. with the sarne incision as that of the Burn Woman's. Dymphna dnnks the wine. Burn Woman stops crying.)
(Landlady holds out hand for payment. Jester gives a coin.)
Landlady: What coin is this? A copy of your friend?
Jester: (smiling in spite of himself) A coin to never look upon the face Lest you rnirror it. and fa11 away from grace.
(Dymphna lies down up stage)
Shy Man: (wanders back across the stage) Did we get any mail?
(Jester turns to audience)
