Not Catholic? Interested in Finding Out More about the Catholic
Church? If you are not baptized, or if you were baptized in a Protestant or Orthodox church, and you think you might be called to the Roman Catholic Church, we have a class called RCIA. It meets Sundays at 10:10 am. Please call Fr. Mark or Fr. Timothy at 367-4657 for information and assistance.
Priest Pension Plan Collection This weekend we will have a special collection for the Priest’s’ Pension Plan. The diocesan plan is currently underfunded!!! Fourteen priests are currently retired and in 10 years, the number will increase by 5. Some of the retired priests are still working as pastors and assistants and they are not quite the burden on the plan as they could be! None the less, please be generous in caring for those completely retired, ill and infirm.
Please Endow a “choir chair”? Thanks to our new choir director, our choirs – that’s plural! -- are growing, and hence the need
for more choir chairs. We hope to match the oak ones already in use. If you would like to donate a chair, please send a check for $300 to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Names of all donors will be placed on each chair. We actually need 30 chairs for the choir warmup room and the loft.
APRIL 2020 TOUR OF ITALY Fr. Mark is organizing an 11-day tour of Italy for late April 2020. We will visit Rome [papal audience], Assisi, Florence, Sorrento, Amalfi and Livorno. Masses daily. Why the sea coast city of Livorno? In Livorno we will follow the footsteps of Elizabeth Seton, an Episcopalian who visited that city in 1803/4. Her husband William Seton died tragically in Livorno. There she first encountered Roman Catholicism. At first she was amused by her Italian Catholic friends’ efforts to make her Catholic, but when she left Livorno for her native New York City several months later, she was determined to become a Catholic … a path that led her to sainthood. Trip will cost $4-5,000 per person. If interested, contact Fr. Mark at 432-202-0336.
Saga of the Lights in the Church As you know, we are having problems with the lighting in the church. The bishop has given us permission to pursue legal redress from those we believe responsible for the problem. More on this chapter later….
Pope’s August Intention Families, Schools of Human Growth
That families, through their life of prayer and love, become ever more clearly “schools of true human growth”.
Question of the Week
How do you treat your possessions?
Do you hide them or share them?
Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. — Psalm 90:12
BAPTISM PREP CLASS-Our next baptism preparation class is Saturday, September 7 at 9 a.m. You
must call to register for this class. Please call after August 21. If there is no answer, dial 121 for Vickie’s ext. and leave a message. To Schedule a Baptism - In order to baptize at St. Elizabeth’s, the parents of the child should be registered members of St. Elizabeth’s, or live within our boundaries. Parents please come to the office to schedule your child’s baptism. You will need to bring in the baby’s birth certificate, from the county, the godparents’ confirmation certificates, if the godparents are married, a copy of their church marriage certificate and proof of Baptism prep classes for parents and godparents. We do baptisms the 1ST & 2ND weekends of the month. Baptisms will be held on the 3RD
weekend only if Spanish is requested. The first person to come into the office with all necessary paperwork to register for a weekend will get to pick which day, Saturday or Sunday, for all baptisms that weekend. You must register in the office, before the date of your child’s baptism and you must
have all paperwork!
BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Breaking Open the Word is a program we have here at St Elizabeth Ann Seton on Sunday mornings beginning at 10:10 to 11:20 AM. It is an opportunity to read and discuss the Sunday scripture readings for that week. This is a great way to learn scripture and how it applies to our
lives today.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES Our No-Show fundraiser to benefit our food
pantry has wrapped up, unfortunately we did not
meet our goal. Our food pantry is need of the
following items: canned corn, canned green
beans, canned tomato, tomato sauce and canned
soups. Luncheon loaf is always a welcome item
too! Any food donations can be dropped off in
the trailer at St. Elizabeth’s or at the agency
located at 2500 Andrews Hwy. Thank you again
for helping us to feed the hungry and homeless of
Ector County. Please continue to pray for the
staff, volunteers and donors of Catholic Charities
as we continue our mission to serve the poor.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Apart from the period from Thanksgiving through Christmas, the summer is a favored time for family reunions. We trace family trees and recall our origins. Worship has a family tree as well, and the way we celebrate today has been influenced by various styles and customs through the centuries. We are Western Christians of the Latin Rite. By far, we are the most numerous Western Christians, but there are other ritual families as well. The Archdiocese of Milan in Italy follows the Ambrosian Rite, Toledo in Spain preserves the Mozarabic Rite and the Arab language, and Lyons in France is home to the Gallican Rite. Other liturgical families, such as the Celtic in Ireland and the Sarum in England, faded away after the Reformation. Until
recent times, members of some ancient religious orders such as Carmelites and Trappists followed a pattern of Mass that varied slightly from the plan observed in Latin Rite parishes. Isn’t the Catholic Church the same everywhere? Not at all. It never has been! The existence of so many liturgical families in the West reminds us that unity, not uniformity, is what the Church seeks to achieve among her children. We are united in faith, but wonderfully diverse in rituals, ceremonies, languages, customs, and spirituality. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

USING OUR TIME WISELY
A jar of honey lasts practically forever. The oldest jar of honey ever discovered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from
market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cherries and cucumbers so we won’t waste a single one. We wouldn’t feel that same urgency about honey. In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe produce. Today’s readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and always, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in everything they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Learning Points about the Eucharist Recently, there has been some questions about the “power” of the Eucharist. In future weeks, I will take a moment to list 10 facts about the Sacrament of the
Eucharist. Here are the first TWO points:
1) Reception of the Eucharist “fuses” our being with that of Christ. St. Cyril of Alexandria
compares it to “when melted wax is fused to other wax”. Our journey is for Christ to
“abide in him and He in us”. The Eucharist is a means to which this can happen.
2) The Eucharist destroys VENIAL SIN. When we receive the Eucharist, we are united with
Christ who BURNS away the vestiges of venial sins and leaves us cleansed.
