From the Pastor’s Desk…
2019 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word”
Next weekend you will find inserted in the Sunday Bulle n a very informa ve brochure explaining and outlining this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. I ask all in our parish to spend some me next week to read and to reflect upon the informa on you will find in the brochure that you will receive. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one- me special collec on. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gi payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gi over a span of me. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes par cipate in the campaign and the gi s of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word.” Once we reach our parish goal this year of $49,636.14 in paid pledges, 100% of any addi onal funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. If you’ve been paying a en on to the finance page in our weekly bulle n you can easily see that our needs are great as we are not mee ng our required budgeted income on a weekly basis. These “extra” funds would help us tremendously. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass with you the weekend of February 23/24. For those who did not receive a mailing or have not had me to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all the Masses on that weekend and the weekend following. Thank you for your prayerful considera on and hopefully generous response.
***************
The 2020 Mass Book will open this Tuesday, February 12th at 9:00 a.m. and will be available for the addi on of your special mass requests throughout the year. As in the past, only 5 inten ons per person can be accepted for the first 2 weeks the Mass book is open. Also, this year 4 inten ons will be accepted for each Mass (except for Masses said for The People of the Parish and The Purgatorial Society which are single inten ons). Please remember that there are some days when individual Mass Inten ons will not be available such as All Soul’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. On these days we will have only one Mass Inten on that will be for all of our deceased loved ones (All Soul’s Day) as well as all of our living and deceased mothers and fathers (Mother’s Day and Father’s Day). There will be an opportunity, however, to include the names of your own personal deceased loved ones for All Soul’s Day and for your individual living and deceased mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, etc. for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day on the special envelopes that will provided in your monthly offering envelopes. These names, when submi ed to the parish office or dropped in the collec on basket, will then be printed on special pages in our parish bulle n as well as kept on our altar throughout the year.

In case you did not read my bulle n ar cle last weekend, I want to give all in our parish an update on Fr. Phil Grib’s health. A er speaking with his Jesuit Community superior and caretakers, it has been decided that this weekend’s planned farewell Mass and recep on for Fr. Phil will need to be postponed indefinitely for now. This is certainly much to his and our disappointment. Unfortunately he has not bounced back from his early January fall as quickly as we had all hoped. Fr. Phil was moved from Resurrec on Hospital two weeks ago to the Resurrec on Life Center across the street on Talco . He had not been ea ng for many days, so the decision was made to provide a feeding tube to enable him to get some nourishment. He can certainly benefit from your prayers, so please remember him in your daily prayers and Masses. You can visit him if you like, but having many visitors might be a li le overwhelming for him in his current condi on.
***************
In light of all the upset and news about the child abuse scandal that has shaken our Church, Bishop Bartosic has asked that each parish in our Vicariate host a 30 minute or so listening session to provide our parishioners an opportunity to openly express and share their feelings, thoughts, and ideas with each other and with their pastors. These comments and opinions will be recorded (wri en down) and shared with Cardinal Cupich at a Vicariate-wide listening session that will be held in March. To honor this important request and to solicit your feedback, we will be gathering in the Shaunessy Center next Sunday, February 17th at 12:45 p.m. right a er the 11:30 a.m. Mass. All in our parish are invited to a end and offer your valuable input.
***************
This Thursday, February 14th, is Valen ne’s Day. According to legend, the Valen ne takes its name from a young Chris an priest who lived in Rome. Like so many of the early Chris ans, Valen ne had been imprisoned because of his faith. O en and longingly he thought of his loved ones and wanted to assure them of his well-being and of his love for them. Beyond his cell window, just within reach, grew a cluster of violets. He picked some of the heart-shaped leaves and pricked them with the words, “Remember your Valen ne,” and sent them off by a friendly dove. On the next day, and the next, he sent more messages that simply said, “I love you.” Thus, did the Valen ne have its beginning. And so it has been through the ages…Those who love, remember…And send Valen nes to express their love.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY to all in our parish family!
Fr. Rich

BLESSING OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS AFTER THE 9:30 AM MASS
GOD ’S SUMMONS Confronted with God ’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Isaiah answered, Here I am, send me. We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won ’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God ’s messenger? Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
POPE FRANCIS TWEET FOR THE WEEK The Document on Human Fraternity, which I signed
today in Abu Dhabi with my brother the Grand Iman of
Al-Azhar, invites all persons who have faith in God and faith in human fraternity to unite and work together.

Prayer with Scripture
We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an una rac ve side of human nature by pi ng contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by commi ng ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ ’s total gi , we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gi of God ’s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self-giving is o en accompanied by a collec on and procession of gi s for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collec ng money, some perhaps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and a ending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to par cipa on in the changes the Reign of God requires. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Do not fail in love Let us see that whenever we have failed to be loving, we have also failed to be wise; that whenever we have been blind to our neighbors' interests, we have also been blind to our own; whenever we have hurt oth-ers, we have hurt ourselves still more. Let us ask for-giveness of God for all acts of malice and uncharitable-ness, blindness and hardness of heart; and pray for the spirit of true charity, which alone is true wisdom. And let us come to Holy Communion in charity with each other and with all; determined henceforth to feel for each oth-er, and with each other; to put ourselves in our neigh-bors' places; to see with their eyes, and to feel with their hearts, so far as God shall give us that great grace; determined to make allowances for their mis-takes and failings; to give and forgive, even as God gives and forgives, for ever; that so we may be indeed the children of our Father in heaven, whose name is Love.
