Knights of Columbus

We have many wonderful groups here at St. Eugene Church. A great Altar and Rosary Society, dedicated Ushers, parishioners on the Pastoral Council, Finance Council, the School Board, the Decorating Committee, the Social Concerns Ministry, the St. Joseph Table Committee, and many other groups that make our parish spiritually vibrant. I will try to highlight a different group from time to time to help parishioners understand a particular group better, or, to help the organization in their efforts to get new members.

This week I would like to focus on the Knights of Columbus. This is a group of men dedicated to the church, family life, support of seminarians, the pro-life movement, and many other excellent causes. Here at St. Eugene Church, the Knights of Columbus do a lot for our children in the school. A poster contest, a basketball free throw contest, and an Altar Server appreciation party are just a few things they support throughout the year.

The Knights of Columbus are having a membership drive in the hope of attracting dedicated faith-filled men to join them. Like many other organizations at the parish, they could use new members. I would also like to encourage those young men with families to seriously look at the Knights of Columbus, for they carry one of the best insurance policies in the country. The Knights of Columbus takes great care of a member’s family if a tragedy strikes. Wives and children truly benefit when dad is a member of the Knights of Columbus. Not only is there financial peace of mind, but the wife of a Knight of Columbus gets the added advantage of getting her husband out of the house and out of her hair once in a while when he attends meetings!

For more information, please call the rectory and we will help you get in touch with a member of the Knights of Columbus who will gladly answer any questions.

Yours in Christ,

P.S. Thanksgiving Day is meant to be a time of joy; however, the holiday can

bring sorrow to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one. It is hard to celebrate when someone you loved is no longer with the family. In those times of sorrow, praying for loved ones who have passed can bring comfort. That is why I want to once again invite everyone to come to Mass on Thanksgiving Day. Masses are at 6:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Also, since we have been blessed, we are called to share our good fortune with those in need. The St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Drive will take place on Thanksgiving Day. One of the greatest ways we can show our appreciation for the many gifts we have received is to share some of what we have with other people. Please be generous to the Food Drive.

Have a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving Day!

SHARING OUR GIFTS Autumn is the season for harvesting and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week’s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ADORATION of the

BLESSED SACRAMENT Mondays in church

12:00 NOON - 8:00 pm with Benediction at 7:45 pm

“When we go before the Blessed Sacrament,

let us open our hearts; our good God will open His.

We shall go to Him; He will come to us; the one to ask, the other to receive.

It will be like a breath from one to the other.” St. John Vianney

PLEASE COME — VISIT JESUS

PEOPLE OF THE CROSS UNITED

We are all members of the Body of Christ. If one member suffers, all members suffer.

(1 COR: 12:26) Please pray for our brothers and sisters who suffer persecution in many countries throughout the world because of their Christian faith.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

THANKSGIVING “It is right that we should be grateful for the plenty

amidst which we live; the productivity of our farms, the output of our factories, the skill of our artisans and the ingenuity of our inventors. But in the midst of our thanksgiving, let us not be unmindful of the plight of those in many parts of the world to whom hunger is no stranger and the plight of those millions more who live without the blessings of liberty and freedom. With some, we are able to share our material abundance. To all, we can offer the sustenance of hope that we shall not fail in our unceasing efforts to make this a peaceful and pros-perous world for all mankind.” J. F. Kennedy

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Earlier this autumn, we looked at how our Eucharistic Prayers have been enriched by the approval of several new prayers to augment the old Roman Canon. For us, there are the four standard prayers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions). We also have two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source for these two prayers is the request by many bishops for a special prayer for the “Holy Year” of 1975. Originally, the committee in charge was commissioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in today’s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconciliation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were published, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never formally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SOCIAL CONCERNS MINISTRY GIFT PROGRAM

We are running our annual

Christmas Gift Program for the children of

Our Lady of Mercy Parish. This year we’ve been given the names of over 400 children.

In past years, thanks to the generosity of the members of the St. Eugene community,

we’ve been able to provide a gift for every child in the Christmas Gift Program.

We are hoping that the members of the St. Eugene community

will once again help us to provide a gift for each of the 425 children. The suggested gift amount is

$15.00 - $20.00.

Our members will be in the vestibule of the church with the children’s names before and after Masses the weekend of

December 2 - 3. All gifts should be wrapped & returned to church the weekend of

December 16 - 17.

Remember the gifts must be returned by 11:00 am on December 17.

Our members want to thank everyone for bringing a little joy into the lives of these children this Christmas season.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
