Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Eulalia Parish,

Merry Christmas!

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; …you have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing (Is 9:1-2). These resounding words certainly can fill our hearings this year as we prepare ourselves to celebrate Christmas in the midst of this terrible pandemic. The Lord is coming, let us rejoice and be glad. Fr. Jim Savages’ homily on the meaning of Rejoicing

The homily on the Third Sunday of Advent inspired me greatly as I was listening (available on parish website). I always enjoy listening to his homilies, but this one really touched my heart and soul. From the Scriptural point of view, he provided 4 areas that associate with joy. The Bible is truly the resource for us to look for peace, love, and joy that we need in life. (1) Joy associates with New Life. He explained with the stories of the angels’ talk with Zachariah in the temple, Mary at Annunciation, and the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. (2) Joy associates with Discovery. The parables of the lost sheep and coin, as well as the return of the prodigal son were excellent evidence. (3) Joy in Suffering. He used scripture passages to remind us the great words of Jesus “Blessed are those who suffer for doing what is right. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.” (4) Joy and Jesus himself. The words of Jesus at the Last supper were real.

Personal Testimony

Having been in the darkness of pain and suffering for 18 years, I know well of the light of good health. A car accident in my early 20’s in the Summer of 1992 made my life miserable. My back was in terribly pain con-stantly; my neck was as stiff as a stick. No doctor could figure out what the problems were. Years later in the Fall of 1996, the pain went down to my left leg, my brain seemed to lose control of it. To a point, I was a se-verely handicapped man. I had to use a cane often and had people to help me climb up the stairs at Mass. Again, no doctor could help me ease the pain. Being weary, frustrated, and depressed was a constant in life. I prayed and questioned; I searched and was disappointed. Yet, I persevered. God seemed to turn a deaf ear to me until the Fall of 2010. A few invitations came to me from a priest who was on my faculty at the Seminary in Beijing. I answered finally, the third time, to go to the prayer meeting they were having. Miracle! After they prayed over me, my neck could make turns, my back became flexible, and I could raise my left leg! I was healed! Leaping with Joy, I cried. That great joy from God is still with me. It seemed that Fr. Jim was speaking to me directly about the Joy that associates with Actions. At that moment, I remembered the failed promise I made to that priest who invited me: I will go and tell people the work of God. I have a need to fulfill my promise to tell the world that God has done great things for me. John the Bap-tist and Mary both fulfilled their promises. The shepherd who lost sheep and the widow who lost her coin all shared with others their joys.

Friends, no joy is too personal to be shared. The angel used “Do Not Be Afraid” three times in this week’s Gospels (Mt. Fri., Lk. Sat and Lk. Sun) to encourage people to go out and proclaim the good news. After over nine months of pandemic, I am sure that we are not afraid anymore because we know the Lord is with us. Our Lord is coming to deliver us from fear and darkness. Come, Lord Jesus. May all members of St. Eulalia parish be blessed! Peace and Joy!

God bless,

Fr. John Chen

The Blessing of the Nativity Scene

Holy Child, on this festival of your birth

we ask your blessing on all who look upon this scene.

In abandoning the riches of heaven, you exalt poverty. Choosing a manger for your crib, you honor simplicity.

In the lowliness of your birth, humility is praised.

As we look upon this scene, fill us with a spirit of poverty, simplicity of desire, and blessed humility.

Make our souls a new Bethlehem

where we will sing your praise for ever and ever.

Amen.

A t Table Dur ing Chr istmast ime

Lord, Jesus,

In the peace of this season our spirits rejoice:

With the beasts and angels, the shepherds and stars, with Mary and Joseph, we sing God’s praise.

By your coming may the hungry be filled with good things,

and may our table and home be blessed.

Glory to God in the Highest!

The Crucible of Ownership – Part I

“I am yours and you are mine.” These words ring out in song, scripture, and in many commitment ceremonies over the decades. The Song of Solomon and Isaiah 43 are two places where I find these particular words calling out to us.

For many, these are scary words. I don’t think I ever thought of them as scary, but certainly hard to understand. For me, this was because of distance or boundaries to God made clear by the nuns catechizing me as a child. Every time I had an experience of God’s love, it was complemented by the knowledge (instructions) that God was to be feared, and I was to behave if I had any chance of even meeting Him in the afterlife. There was little discussion of God’s continued presence in the world and, in particu-lar, Sr. Rosario’s classroom (humor intended).

The separation from God indicated to me I had to keep God on a pedestal, just like the statues in the sanctuary at St. John’s in Trowbridge, England. I was to keep my dis-tance and have reverence in all things when in the sanctuary, and then we could let loose a little when back in the playground behind our school.

There was a duality taught to me, which is still perhaps present today, but more im-portantly, I was conditioned in another way. God made me, (Baltimore Catechism), but I didn’t own God, and God didn’t own me. My relationship was to be at one level alone; adoration and obedience. All else was forbidden; even if it was not verbalized, it just was not taught.

So moving to the next level, the idea of a God of fellowship and friendship was not easily attainable to me; after all, I could not be friends with God, could I? Now, I don’t want you to get the idea that the Church in the 1960s was preaching a God of fear alone, it wasn’t, but the point for me was I was being told I could not attempt to get too close to Him.

As it happens, this was juxtaposed with my experience of God. At my First Commun-ion, I had a mystical experience (I didn’t know what it was at the time), where I truly felt the physical presence of God inside my body. It assured me that despite all the teaching that I could not get close to God, they could not prevent God from being as close to me as it gets—being inside me!

So, I am going to return to the title of this reflection—the crucible of ownership. If I am yours and you are mine is a true statement (which I believe it is as it is written clearly so many times in scripture) then what does that mean for my relationship with God? Do I own God? Does God own me? Do we own each other?

Ponder these questions during the week, and we will continue to examine this question further in another seven days. Have a blessed week.
