My dear Parishioners, As we began our Lenten journey, I invite you to read and reflect on Pope Francis’s Ash Wednesday homily titled :

“Pause, See and Return.”

The season of Lent is a favorable time to remedy the dissonant chords of our Christian life and to receive the ever new, joyful and hope-filled proclamation of the Lord’s Passover. The Church in her maternal wisdom invites us to pay special attention to anything that could dampen or even corrode our believing heart. We are subject to numerous temptations. Each of us knows the difficulties we have to face. And it is sad to note that, when faced with the ever-varying circumstances of our daily lives, there are voices raised that take advantage of pain and uncertainty; the only thing they aim to do is sow distrust. If the fruit of faith is charity - as Mother Teresa often used to say - then the fruit of distrust is apathy and resignation. Distrust, apathy and resignation: these are demons that deaden and paralyze the soul of a believing people. Lent is the ideal time to unmask these and other temptations, to allow our hearts to beat once more in tune with the vibrant heart of Jesus. The whole of the Lenten season is imbued with this conviction, which we could say is echoed by three words offered to us in order to rekindle the heart of the believer: pause, see and return. Pause a little, leave behind the unrest and commotion that fill the soul with bitter feelings which never get us anywhere. Pause from this compulsion to a fast-paced life that scatters, divides and ultimately destroys time with family, with friends, with children, with grandparents, and time as a gift …. time with God. Pause for a little while, refrain from the need to show off and be seen by all, to continually appear on the “noticeboard” that makes us forget the value of intimacy and recollection. Pause for a little while, refrain from haughty looks, from fleeting and pejorative comments that arise from forgetting tenderness, compassion and reverence for the encounter with others, particularly those who are vulnerable, hurt and even immersed in sin and error. Pause for a little while, refrain from the urge to want to control everything, know everything, destroy every-thing; this comes from overlooking gratitude for the gift of life and all the good we receive. Pause for a little while, refrain from the deafening noise that weakens and confuses our hearing , that makes us forget the fruitful and creative power of silence. Pause for a little while, refrain from the attitude which promotes sterile and unproductive thoughts that arise from isolation and self-pity, and that cause us to forget going out to encounter others to share their burdens and suffering. Pause for a little while, refrain from the emptiness of everything that is instantaneous, momentary and fleeting, that deprives us of our roots, our ties, of the value of continuity and the awareness of our ongoing journey. Pause in order to look and contemplate. ….to be continued next week

If anyone in your family or close association to you has been ill for a long time and/or is unable to come to Church to receive Holy Eucharist, please know that there are members of the Pastoral Care Team who are willing to bring Holy Communion to them. We had a wonderful Catholic School’s week a few weeks ago and I am so grateful to all of you for celebrating with us. I enjoyed seeing many of our regular parishioners visiting our classrooms and school. Our student leaders did an excellent job giving tours and our student ambassadors lead people around the classrooms. If you missed the tour and know someone that is interested in our school please have them call the office. We offer personal tours with our student leaders and a personal meeting with the principal as well. We already have applications coming in so if you know someone who is interested tell them to fill out an online application as soon as possible. Our application is available on our website. I am so very grateful to Fr. Tom for supporting the St. Felicitas School second collection during Catholic School’s Week. We are so very lucky to have a pastor so passionate about Catholic Education. I am overwhelmed by the generosity and monetary support given during the second collection. Every little bit counts and will directly impact our student’s education. We are really excited to celebrate the 60th anniversary in honor of St. Felicitas Day in March of 2019. We will be celebrating with a Friday Alumni Gala and Festival on Saturday and Sunday (March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd) It will be a Mardi Gras Theme as Lent begins the following Wednesday. “El Miércoles de Ceniza, los cristianos, al recibir la ceniza entran en el tiempo establecido para purificar el espíritu. Este signo de penitencia, legado por la tradición bíblica (Cf. Salm 13:19; Est 4:1; Jb 42:6; 1 Mac 3:47, 4:39; Lamen. 2:10) y conservado hasta nuestros días por la costumbre de la Iglesia, significa la condición del hombre pcador, que confiesa públicamente su culpa delante de Dios; y así expresa su voluntad interior de cover-sión, impulsado por la esperanza de que Dios sea clemente y misericordioso con él, lento a la cólera y rico en clemencia. Con este mismo signo comien-za el camino de la conversión, que llega a su meta por la celebración del Sacramento de la Penitencia en los días que anteceden a la Pascua”. (Ceremonial de los Obispos, 253) Las siguientes regulaciones en referencia al ayuno y la abstinencia son las que se observan en todos los Estados Unidos: Los católicos mayores de 14 años deben abstenerse de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza, el Viernes Santo y los Viernes de cuaresma Todas las personas entre los 18 y 59 años están obligadas al ayuno el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. El ayuno requiere una comida completa y dos pequeñas para mantener las fuerzas necesarias, pero no se debe comer nada entre comidas. Estas prácticas sin embargo no son obligatorias para aquellos cuya salud corre peligro o para quienes podrían ver su salud y su trabajo seriamente afectados.

LLEVADOS POR EL DILUVIO AL DESIERTO Las lecturas de hoy comienzan con la promesa de Dios a Noé después de la destrucción de todo por las caudalosas aguas del diluvio. Esa agua es transformada en el agua vivificante de nuestro bautismo. Esperamos, al comienzo de este Tiempo de Cuaresma, se nos recuerde que el diluvio nos ha despojado de todo, de estar en el desierto con nada y ser tentados. Lo que no podemos esperar que se nos recuerde de la abundancia y extrava-gancia del amor, bondad, compasión y guía de Dios. Después del diluvio, la tierra y todas sus criaturas fueron restauradas. Cuando Jesús termina su tiempo en el desierto, él es servido y restaurado a la vida con un nuevo entendimiento de lo que es esencial. Jesús predica que este es el tiempo y el Reino de Dios está aquí. NO ESTAMOS SOLOS Empezamos la Cuaresma con fuertes contrastes entre la vida y la muerte, el bien y el mal, el agua y el desierto. La respuesta de Dios es igualmente fuerte. La alianza de Dios es con cada uno y con todo. Nada está fuera del alcance del amor de Dios. La alianza de Dios no tiene límites. Hoy empezamos nuestro camino de prepa-ración, pero no estamos solos. Sin embargo, elegimos usar este tiempo para prepararnos para la muerte y resu-rrección que están por venir, estamos acompañados por el mismo Espíritu que forzó a Noé a construir el Arca para preservar la vida en la Tierra. Estamos acompañados por el mismo Espíritu que llevó a Jesús al desierto para enfrentar la tentación. Es ese Espíritu que hace posible nuestro camino por la Cuaresma. ¿Quién podría enfrentar sólo ese diluvio de tentación? “Các ngươi hãy tĩnh thức và cầu nguyện, để khỏi sa chước cám dỗ. Vì tinh thần thì hăng say, nhưng thể xác lại yếu hèn.” (Mt 26, 41)

Những gì các ngươi đã làm cho một trong các anh em bé mọn nhất của Ta đây, là các ngươi đã làm cho chính Ta.” (Mt 25,40)

SỨ ĐIỆP MÙA CHAY 2018 CỦA ĐỨC THÁNH CHA PHANXICÔ

Anh chị em thân mến, Một lần nữa chúng ta tiến về Lễ Phục Sinh của Chúa! Để chuẩn bị cho lễ này, Chúa Quan Phòng ban cho chúng ta Mùa Chay hàng năm, ”dấu chỉ bí tích sự hoán cải của chúng ta”(1), loan báo và thực hiện khả năng trở về cùng Chúa với trọn tâm hồn và cuộc sống.

Năm nay cũng vậy, qua sứ điệp đây, tôi muốn giúp toàn thể Giáo Hội sống thời điểm ân phúc này trong vui mừng và chân lý; và tôi thực hiện điều này bằng cách để cho mình được gợi ý từ câu nói của Chúa Giêsu trong Tin Mừng theo thánh Mathêu: ”Vì sự ác lan tràn, tình yêu của nhiều người bị nguội lạnh” (24, 12). Câu này ở trong đoạn Chúa nói về thời tận thế và ở trong bối cảnh thành Jerusalem, trên Núi Cây Dầu, chính tại nơi khởi đầu cuộc thương khó của Chúa. Khi trả lời một câu hỏi của các môn đệ, Chúa Giêsu loan báo sầu muộn lớn và mô tả tình trạng trong đó cộng đồng tín hữu có thể lâm vào: đứng trước những biến cố đau thương, một số tiên tri giả sẽ lường gạt nhiều người, đến độ đe dọa làm cho tâm hồn họ bị tắt lịm lòng mến là trung tâm của toàn thể Tin Mừng.

Những tiên tri giả Khi nghe đoạn Tin Mừng này và chúng ta tự hỏi: những tiên tri giả có những hình dạng thế nào?

Chúng giống như những người “làm mê hoặc rắn”, nghĩa là chúng lợi dụng cảm xúc của con người để biến họ thành nô lệ, đưa họ tới những nơi chúng muốn. Bao nhiêu con cái của Thiên Chúa đã bị dụ dỗ bằng những dua nịnh của lạc thú trong chốc lát, mà họ tưởng là hạnh phúc! Bao nhiêu người nam nữ sống như bị mê hoặc vì ảo tưởng tiền bạc, khiến họ trở thành nô lệ cho tiền của hoặc những mối lợi nhỏ nhen! Bao nhiêu người sống mà chỉ nghĩ đến mình và rơi vào tình trạng cô độc!

Có những tiên tri giả khác giống như các ”lang băm”, cống hiến những giải pháp đơn giản và tức thời cho những đau khổ, nhưng thực ra những liều thuốc này hoàn toàn vô hiệu: bao nhiêu người trẻ tìm phương dược giả dối trong ma túy, trong những quan hệ ”dùng rồi bỏ”, kiếm tiền dễ dàng một cách bất chính! Bao nhiêu người khác nữa bị vướng vào một cuộc sống hoàn toàn là ảo, trong đó những tương quan có vẻ đơn gian và mau lẹ hơn, nhưng rồi chúng vô nghĩa một cách bi thảm! Những kẻ lường gạt ấy cống hiến những điều vô giá trị, nhưng chúng lại tước mất điều quí giá nhất như phẩm giá, tự do và khả năng yêu thương. Đó là một sự lường gạt về sự háo danh, biến chúng ta giống như con công.. để rồi trở thành lố bịch; và từ sự lố bịch ta không thể thối lui được. Không lạ gì: ma quỉ, vốn là ”kẻ dối trá và là cha kẻ dối trá” (Ga 8,44), trình bày sự ác như là điều thiện và trình bày điều giả như điều thật, để làm cho tâm hồn con người bị lẫn lộn. Vì thế, mỗi người chúng ta được kêu gọi phân định trong tâm hồn và cứu xét xem mình có bị đe dọa vì những điều giả dối của các tiên tri giả ấy hay không. Cần học cách không dừng lại ở mức độ gần kề, hời hợt, nhưng nhận ra điều để lại trong chúng ta dấu vết tốt lành và lâu bền hơn, vì nó đến từ Thiên Chúa và thực sự có giá trị mưu ích cho chúng ta. ♦ Vào hoang địa của cuộc đời có nghĩa là kiên cường chống trả mọi cơn cám dỗ ma quỷ đưa tới, luôn vững niềm tin vào Chúa dù gặp những khó khăn thử thách.

♦ Vào hoang địa của cuộc đời có nghĩa là từ bỏ ý riêng để luôn tìm Thánh Ý Chúa, sẵn sàng thực hành thánh ý Chúa, dù có phải đau đớn, thiệt thòi.

♦ Vào hoang địa của cuộc đời có nghĩa là giữ tâm hồn bình an thanh thản để gặp gỡ Chúa, tiếp xúc thân mật với Chúa, hoàn toàn thuộc về Chúa Cha để trở nên "con yêu
