Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our respon‐sibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so...please re‐member in your prayers:

A Prayer for the Armed Forces Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be an‐
chored by their faith, protected by Your presence and com‐forted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. T he Sacred Paschal Triduum is the three most solemn days of the liturgical year; Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the
Easter Vigil. These most holy days celebrate the Paschal Mystery, first, the passion, suffer‐ing, and death of the Lord Jesus, followed by his resurrection, the triumph of the holy cross, and Christ’s decisive victory over sin and death. The Triduum is a single feast, the Paschal Mystery, celebrated over three days, and they are the three holi‐est days of the entire liturgical year. It is ironic, however, that feasts like the Assumption on August 15, All Saints Day on No‐vember 1, and the Immaculate Conception on December 8, are holy days of obligation while the three days of the Triduum are not. There is no Church law that requires attendance for the Trid‐uum, but good laws only make compulsory what should be done anyway. For example, God gave the Third Commandment, “Keep holy the Sabbath day” (Ex 20:8), which serves as the basis for the Sunday Mass obligation. We should want to go to Mass every Sunday. It is only right to give thanks for the many blessings that we receive over the course of the week, and if we do not nourish our faith regularly, minimally at least once a week, with God’s holy Word and Holy Communion, it is likely that we will become spiritually malnourished and weaker in our faith. If there was no law, a de‐vout disciple of Jesus would want to go to Mass every Sunday anyway because it is the right thing to do, but because so many are lax with their faith and fail to do what should be presumed, a law was established to make mandatory what Christians should eagerly and gladly do on their own. If there were ever three days that Christians should want to go to church to pray, it would be the Triduum. These days rank at the head of the liturgical calendar. They celebrate the most sacred mysteries of our faith, and they ought to be celebrated with the community at liturgy. The Jews have three high holy days, three pilgrimage feasts, Passover, Pentecost, and Booths, and those who lived outside of Jerusalem made pilgrimage to the Temple to celebrate these solemn occasions. The three days of the Triduum are our “high holy days,” our “pilgrimage feast,” and we ought to make pilgrimage from our homes to church to commemorate and honor how the Lord Jesus laid down his life for us, his friends, for our salvation. Please make it a top priority to go to church to celebrate the Trid‐uum this year. Reserve the time. Rearrange your schedule if nec‐essary. Take some personal time off from work. Suspend errands or jobs around the house. Drop everything. Plan to attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Passion of the Lord on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. These days may be optional, but none are more important. WAY OF THE CROSS – DOWNTOWN CHICAGO Each year we follow the passion of Christ in the heart of our city, where thousands of peo‐ple carry their cross every day. Through choral music, Gospel passages, reflections, and our silent procession, we hope to enter more deeply into the events of Good Fri‐day and their meaning for us today. We ask to experience the exceptional Presence of Christ among us as a real answer to the needs of our hearts. As we process through downtown Chicago on Good Friday, we join with the entire Church, the Church throughout the world and the Church throughout the ages, in remembering what Christ's suffering and death mean ‐ not remembering what it meant ‐ but remembering what it means for us here and now and means for all people in every place and time. We invite you to join us in this simple expression of our love for Christ and His love for us in the morning of Good Friday, March 29, 2013 at 8:45 AM Introduction by Francis Cardinal George

A special word from our shepherd To the Catholics of the Archdiocese on the election of our new Pope
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am writing this note shortly after the conclusion of the con‐clave in which Cardinal Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Ai‐res, was chosen to lead the See of Rome and be pastor of the universal church. As you know, he has taken the name of Francis, the first pope to do so. He is also the first pope from the American continent. His name indicates a program of rebuilding the church through living with Christ in authentic ways, of taking to heart the concerns of poor people around the world, of dia‐loguing with those who do not know Christ nor understand what he has done to save the world from its sins. St. Francis was able to inspire a movement that has strengthened the church for 800 years, and the pope who bears his name will give all that he is and has in order to do the same. I know you will pray for our Holy Father, Pope Francis. His name will be mentioned in every Mass celebrated around the world. In Chicago it will give me great joy to hear it men‐tioned in conjunction with my own! The beginning of a new papacy brings with it God’s grace to strengthen our faith and give thanks to God for our life together in Christ. I look forward to my return to Chicago after the pope’s inau‐gural Mass on March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, patron of the universal church. You are in my prayers, and I thank you for yours for me and for the other cardinals who were part of this historic conclave. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago
Cardinal George prays the rosary before a prayer service with eucharistic adoration in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican March 6. More than 100 cardinals gathered in front of Bernini's statue, "The Chair of St. Peter," for the evening service. Cardinal George was among the cardinal‐electors who chose Pope Francis as the next pope.

E xcept for the resurrection on Easter, Holy Thursday is possibly one of the most
important, complex, and pro‐found days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and
blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.
During the Last Supper, Jesus offers himself as the Pass‐over sacrifice, the sacrificial lamb, and teaches that every ordained priest is to follow the same sacrifice in the exact
same way.
On that day, please remember and keep in prayers all priests, but especially the priests working in our parish:
our pastor, Fr. Jason Torba and his associate pastorS, Fr. Robert Pajor, Fr. Albert Judy,
and Fr. Ray O’Connor.
May Mary, the Mother of all the priests, fill them with a renewed vigour to celebrate the precious gift of priest‐hood and the God’s infinite love reach out to all our be‐
loved priests! God Bless!

N iedziela Palmowa, zwana w liturgii Niedzielą Męki Pańskiej, rozpoczyna w Kościele obchody najważniejszego tygodnia – Wielkiego Tygodnia.
Uroczystości Niedzieli Palmowej przybliżają nas do przeżyć Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego — punktu kulminacyjnego w całej historii zbawienia. Wielki Tydzień rozpoczyna się w atmosferze triumfu. Wszyscy czterej ewangeliści pozostawili opis radosnego wjazdu Chrystusa do Jerozolimy. Zmierzając ku miastu od strony Góry Oliwnej, Jezus dosiadł osiołka, a tłum witający Syna Bożego rozścielał na drodze płaszcze i gałązki drzew. (…) Liturgia Kościoła nawiązuje ściśle do wydarzeń sprzed bez mała dwóch tysięcy lat.
jakościowy i ilościowy.

WIELKI CZWARTEK — USTANOWIENIE SAKRAMENTU KAPŁAŃSTWA
Wielki Czwartek to wspomnienie ustanowienia Sakramentów Eucharystii i Kapłaństwa. Jest to więc święto wszystkich kapłanów. Jest to dzień, w którym bardziej niż każdego innego dnia w roku mamy okazję uświadomić sobie,
jak wiele kapłanom zawdzięczamy. Św. Jan Maria Vianney napisał: „Gdybyśmy nie mieli sakramentu Kapłaństwa, nie mielibyśmy Pana. Kto Go umieścił w tabernakulum? Kapłan. Kto przyjął naszą duszę u początku jej życia? Kapłan. Kto ją żywi, by dać jej siłę na wędrówkę? A gdy dusza będzie umierała, kto ją ożywi, kto jej udzieli ciszy i pokoju? I tu kapłan. Nie można sobie przypomnieć ani jednego dobrodziejstwa Boga bez spotkania obok tego wspomnienia obrazu kapłana.”
W dniu, w którym Pan Jezus ofiarował Kościołowi dar Eucharystii, a wraz z nią ustanowił kapłań‐stwo, pragniemy skierować słowa
podziękowania oraz życzeń do kapłanów pracujących w naszej parafii, ks. Zdzisława Torby, proboszcza oraz ks. Roberta Pajora, wikariusza oraz księży Alberta Judy i Ray O’Connor.
Pragniemy Wam życzyć by droga, na którą zaprosił Was Chrystus – Najwyższy Kapłan była dla Was drogą ku świętości. Niech stale w Was wzrasta miłość do Eucharystii. Niech w gorliwym i pełnym poświęcenia wypełnianiu pragnień Serca Bożego wspiera Was zawsze moc Ducha Świętego. Niech Wasza szlachetna posługa siania ziarna Bożej Prawdy i prowadzenia ludzi do spotkania z Chrystusem w sakramentach przynosi radość. Niech przyczynia się do budowania jedności Kościoła – naszego Domu. Matka Chrystusa, Matka Kapłanów swą macierzyńską miłością niechaj broni, osłania i czuwa nad Wami. Szczęść Boże!
Geneza Wielkiego Tygodnia

Piotr był rybakiem, a Jezus uczynił go rybakiem ludzi – ks. Federico Lombardi SJ.
Przedstawia on na błękitnej tarczy w górnej części czerwone litery IHS, czyli skrót
imienia Jezus, na tle promienistego słońca z krzyżem i trzema gwoźdźmi. Jest to emblemat zakonu jezuitów, do którego należy Franciszek. W dolnej części tarczy herbowej widać gwiazdę, symbol Matki Bożej, i kwiat spikanardu, symbolizujący św.

Unlike a lot of churches I’ve visited, my home parish church, St. Constance on Chicago’s northwest side, does not present a large depiction of the crucified Christ. The corpus is always present at Mass on the hand held cross which the altar servers carry out from the sacristy, but the large relief statuary on the front wall of the church above the altar depicts the risen Christ in flowing robes with his hands upwardly extended. At least since my wife and I joined the parish in the mid‐1980’s, that’s the way it’s always been. Which is not to say there haven’t been a few changes along the way. Most notably some years back, an artist was commissioned to add legs and feet to the image (in the original work, only Christ’s upper torso was visible beneath the robe). It took me a while to warm to the new look. I did with time, though. In fact, I often focus on the risen Christ after receiving Communion, so I’m surprised I didn’t see the latest change in the image until my wife pointed it out to me after 10:30 Mass just this past weekend. The statuary now has stigmata… Gail said she actually noticed the nail marks in the relief statue’s hands and the lance wound in its side a few weeks prior but didn’t mention it to me, so I briefly stared at them wondering how I could have missed them. Then I asked a few friends still in church if they knew anything about the new look. Turns out everyone knew about the new look, and everyone told me it was recent, but nobody could tell me exactly when the change went down. One
friend showed me a picture he’d snapped of the statuary at Christ‐mas, though, just to confirm that the marks weren’t there then. Regardless of the timing, I like this new look, too, and right now I’m focused on the nail marks because of something in today’s Gospel, our Lord’s Passion according to Luke. Upon Christ’s death in Matthew’s version of the Passion, the centurion stationed nearby to watch over Jesus says, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” Similarly upon Christ’s death in Mark’s version, the centurion says, “Truly, this man was the Son of God!” But upon Christ’s death in Luke’s version, the centurion observes, “Surely, this was an inno‐cent man!” Here, Luke focuses not only on Christ’s undeniable innocence, but also on his undeniable human‐ness, which makes the nails and the spear even more horrific to consider. Yes, Jesus is Lord and savior. He walks on water, gives sight to the blind, raises the dead. On the tree, though, he is you and me. He anguishes the same as you and me. He bleeds the same as you and me. He cries out the same as you and me. A few weeks ago on the mountain with Peter, John, and James, we saw Christ in all his Godly glory. Today, we see an innocent man crucified, and his nails bring us to tears. The new statuary stigmata‐‐whenever those nail marks arrived‐‐helps me to appreciate this more, which leads me in turn to ponder more deeply Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. Lord, I still don’t truly un‐derstand it, but I am grateful for it beyond words.
