JUNE 26th, 2016 “I’ve got a ton of paperwork facing me back at the office.” “He’s a zillionaire with no money worries.” “It was hot as hell today at the ball-park.” We know not to take statements like these literally. They, and a raft of others like them, are exaggerations meant to make a point in conver-sation. All of us make them without a second thought in the belief that they will help us make our point more forcefully. A message with punch in it. Bear in mind that the language Jesus spoke in His earthly life had no superlative degree, as English does. So Jesus exaggerates as He lays out the main condition for being His disciple. Just listen again to His responses. “I have nowhere to rest My head.” “Let the dead bury the dead.” “Nobody using a plow should ever look back.” Jesus would have had no disciples at all if people took those answers literally. But His meaning is clear nonetheless. Being a disciple, as we well know all these centuries lat-er, demands being open to a radical change in our thinking from whatever philosophy happens to hold sway at a particular time and place. Our lifestyle is likely to be different from others as an outward expression of this mindset. Besides, it often takes a giant leap of faith into the unknown on our part. What makes that ultimately possi-ble, of course, is love. In our case, that is love for a person, not for a philosophical principle. On one level, we can compare this love to that in a happy marriage. When a man and woman give their “yes” to each other for life, they do so with no idea of what’s ahead for them or how it will all turn out. There are no guarantees. Ex-cept for their trust in each other and deep love, the risk would be overwhelming. The same could be said for persons who answer the Lord’s call to priestly or religious vocation. Trust and love are paramount. All this is equally true for those who commit to the Christian way of life. Following Jesus does not give one an address on “Easy Street.” Once we set out to live our decision, we know that looking back with any regret is counterproduc-tive. Why would a person be tempted to do so? Chiefly because Satan, our number one ene-my, does not want us united to Christ. He is a highly skilled salesman who knows our weak-nesses better than we do. When we slip up by sinning, he is delighted. But when we come to our senses and turn back to God it’s something like a new lease on life. We are at peace. At this time of year, when gardening is at its peak, here’s a bit of true wisdom: “A person’s character and his/her garden both reflect the amount of weeding that was done during the growing season.” And that’s no exaggeration!

Families Bid Farewell to St. Francis de Sales School

The closing events were held to honor the memory of St. Francis de Sales

School as the students and teachers gathered on Tuesday, June 14th on the

grounds of the school to bury a time capsule. Kindergarten through eighth

grade, each chose an item representative of a story of St. Francis de Sales

School. Items such as a Franciscan cross, No Uniform Today "NUT" passes, a

year book, the school mission statement and class photos were placed in a box

to be buried at the foot of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the school

landscape. It was the students’ hope that future generations may find the arti-

facts and appreciate the school that was known as the “heart of the communi-

ty.”

The closing celebrations continued, as families of the students currently

attending the school gathered for a dinner at the Ballrooms of Boothwyn in

Boothwyn, Pennsylvania. The night was sponsored by the Home and School

Board Association of St. Francis de Sales School to give back to all the faculty,

staff and families who gave so much of themselves to the school. Carnival

games, face painting, dancing and “selfie” photos in front of a mural of the

school painted by Marie Samohod, the 4th grade teacher, made for a fun night of

memories for all. Both current and former administrators and faculty were

treated by presentations of students who gave tributes about each individual

educator’s contribution to the school. The eighth grade gathered as a class for a

final time at their graduation mass and ceremony on Wednesday, June 15, 2016,

at the parish church. The 24 graduating students wore caps and gowns in the

school colors of green with gold tassels, as they represented the last class to

graduate from St. Francis de Sales School.

On Thursday, June 16th, 2016, the doors of St. Francis de Sales School

opened to welcome students for the last time. The school had a mass, led by Fr.

Okon, to express their thanks for their school and academic year and ask for

blessings for the summer. The children received their final report cards and

those students that were awarded academic honors were recognized. The ad-

ministrator, teachers, students and families had hugs and tears for each other as

they wished each other well in their transition. Although the students were be-

ing redirected to many other schools, St. Francis de Sales School would forever

be in their hearts. As the doors closed, the principal, sisters, and teachers were

comforted that their students would always remember and live the creed of

St. Francis de Sales who said, “Be who you are and be that well.”

The students, faculty and staff of SFDS

say good bye to their “little school on the hill.”
