5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER · May 10, 2020
Friends, When I first heard the Archbishop confirm the recommendation of the governor to allow the public to attend Mass again, I was ecstatic. There is nothing more important to me as a priest, or to anyone really, than the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Even though I was personally never denied this opportunity, and even though the inestimable value of the Mass was never deprived from our parishes, it is painful beyond belief not to allow, and in some cases, positively deny parishioners the opportunity to encounter Our Resurrected Lord in the Mass. The reality that this purgatory was ending filled my heart with joy. As the days move closer to this reality, this joy began to be corrupted by fear. As I look at the positive tests increasing in our area, the potentially deadly effects of the Corona Virus on the vulnerable, the disastrous effects this could have on small, tight-knit communities like ours, not to mention the potential overwhelming of our local health care systems, I began to wonder if this decision was prudent in our area. Compounding this fear were other Catholic pastors in the area, all of which I hold in high regard, making compelling cases that Catholic Churches should remain closed to public celebrations for the time being despite the Archbishop’s permission. Since the most vulnerable might be the most likely to put themselves at risk at Mass, why tempt them to risk long-term disability, or even death, when there are perfectly adequate and reasonable avenues for them to encounter the love of God in profound ways during this time of pandemic? Why rush back to public celebrations of the Mass? Part of the reason is because, perhaps surprisingly, safety is not the Church’s highest priority. Allowing people to experience the love of Jesus Christ is the Church’s highest priority. Since these are not mutually exclusive priorities, the question pastors struggle with is how to balance safety in encountering the Lord. There is NOT a universal or simplistic answer, and, to my mind, there is not a right or wrong answer. Nevertheless, I am resolute in my decision to allow those wishing to attend Masses the freedom to do so fully whenever Masses are offered in our parishes. Throughout the history of the Church, men and women of faith have put their lives at risk in order to attend Mass. Even when the consequences were exponentially more certain than they are today, Catholics have not only risked death to receive Jesus, legions have actually died because they went to Mass. While there is never an obligation to do this, I cannot deny those who wish to risk everything to encounter the Lord in Holy Communion that opportunity. In our parishes today, there are definitive and catastrophic risks in coming to Mass. These risks are impossible to quantify and may or may not come to fruition. However, they could have catastrophic temporal consequences, not just for those coming to Mass, but for the community as well. On the other hand, the benefit of receiving Our Lord worthily in Holy Communion is also impossible to quantify because it is infinite. This benefit is not only infinite in the temporal realm, but in the eternal realm as well. Whereas the contingent risk caused by the virus only has the possibility of impacting our lives, the certain benefit of Holy Communion will do so infallibly. It is certainly a laudable, although not obligatory, decision to risk even the most likely, most catastrophic temporal consequences, for the most glorious eternal ones. I cannot in good conscience deny someone that opportunity when I have the ability to provide it. It is also unclear to me just how catastrophic the Corona Virus is for much of the population. There are clearly populations at higher risk than others. However, these risks are deemed manageable for “essential” businesses. If we can make our churches as safe as those, shouldn’t adults be free to patronize our “essential business”? After all, no business is more essential than the Church. (Con nued on Page 7.)

*FROM THE FAMILY OF MRS. LILA BROCK: Mrs. Brock is re%ring, she will be unable to have a typical send off or re%rement party so instead we would like to honor her with a card shower. Mrs. Brock started teaching science at Lindsay Holy Family in the fall of 1979. In 1981, she started teaching at Humphrey St. Francis and was asked to start teaching Spanish as well. She learned Spanish with her students those first three years. In 1998, she began teaching at Lakeview. 22 years flew by and now Mrs. Brock is ready to re%re. If Mrs. Brock made an impact on your future by teaching you Science or Spanish, helping you experience new cultures, or by being a mentor we are asking that you take a minute to send a note. Mail can be sent to: Lila Brock, 24634 355th St, Pla?e Center, NE 68653. Emails can be sent to: [email protected].

The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built the Notre Dame Cathedral.
She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral — a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her
baby’s body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new souls to heaven.
Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the creator than any other creature.
God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation… What on God’s earth is more glorious than this: to be a Mother.
(Con nued From Page 1) We will make every effort to ensure our churches are as safe as they can be. But, particularly in the reception of Holy Communion, we cannot do so perfectly. Even if we could, there is still risk in coming to church, maybe even more. Those who are uncomfortable accepting those risks are not less holy, less dedicated, or less loved because they choose to encounter Our Eucharistic Lord differently in a pandemic. Conversely, those who choose to come to Mass may be acting selfishly because their desire for Lord is clouding their obligation to others. However, I refuse to deny the opportunity to receive Jesus to those that are willing to accept the risks. Mass will continue to be livestreamed. If you are unsure whether or not to attend Mass, STAY HOME. Please pray for me and our parishes. I am certain that the Lord will use this time of suffering to open our hearts to an ever increasing outpouring of His Love . Blessings,
