August Blessings, When COVID 19 isolation began back in March, I made arrangements with another person to lock up church every night while they graciously opened it every day. It became a good way to end our day praying for an end to this virus and whatever needs arose. Sitting there in the front pew I would watch a silhouette of a stain glass window as the sun went down. As the days and months passed by the sil-houette moved with the days getting longer up to summer solstice and now shorter. At the height of summer Jesus on the cross shadowed the silhouette. Though it’s tough to see movement day by day, it is perceptible on a weekly basis. Last March, I was hoping this virus would settle down by the summer. That has not been the case. Last Sunday a number of our young adults committed to preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation and a couple weeks before our young children received the Eucharist for the first time. Despite the heavy cloud of COVID 19, our parish spiritual life continues to grow in faith. Faith formation will begin this fall. Though the dark cloud of COVID 19 continues to play out, our family still has birthday parties and Sunday evening meals. COVID 19 has brought our family closer together socially and spiritually. There have been many blessings from this virus. We have learned to wash our hands often and longer as well as wearing masks whenever outside the home. Someone I know was quarantined for two weeks because he came into contact with someone who tested positive to the virus. That person said he kept busy at home doing things that needed to get done, but was glad the quarantine was over because he was wearing out from all the work. I know exactly how he feels! I never realized how many things I overlooked before this virus came along. At the same time we built into our lives more time for prayer at the beginning and ending of our days. However, two weeks ago our two youngest grandchildren stayed with us a whole week. They turned our stable lives upside down. Our prayers moved from medi-tation to cooking, cleaning, and playing with them. Night prayers were done with one eye closed. We were reminded what parents go through every day. Whew!!! Christopher Pramuk of Give Us This Day offered a nice reflection for today’s gospel quoting Rabbi Abra-ham Hershal saying that “if we are not initiated in the appreciation of eternal life, we will not be able to taste eternity in the world to come.” Just going to church every Sunday out of habit will not gain us eternal life. Jesus spells out in Matthew 25:31-46 what it means to acquire a taste for eternal life in our present life. There are other things to help us acquire at taste for eternal life such as forgiving those who have hurt us, learning to be non-judgmental and striving for justice. Every Mass we celebrate has one foot in heaven and one foot on earth. The Eucharist here is a foretaste of what in to come in heaven. It is more than the homily, more than bread we eat, more than the readings proclaimed, and the songs sung. It is the people coming together to praise the Lord for the good things and the bad things of life. It cannot be fully tasted on a chair in our living rooms. The crosses we bear in the name of Christ are made holy on the altar in the Eucharist. Because the cloud of this virus hangs heavy, causing anxiety, fear, and depression, I feel like the Israel-ites of long ago who traveled through the desert to find the Promised Land. Whereas they followed the Pillar of Fire at night, Jesus leads us through this wilderness to Calvary, to the day this virus will end. Alleluia! Alleluia! Deacon Jim

Saint Augustine or Augustine of Hippo, was nothing like a saint when he was young, probably like most of us, but he became the bishop of Hippo (now Annaba, Algeria) from 396 to 430. A renowned theologian and prolific writer, he was also a skilled preacher and rhetorician. He is one of the Latin Fathers of the Church and, in Roman Catholicism, is formally recognized as a doctor of the church.

Act of Spiritual Communion A Prayer by Alphonsus de Liguori

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be sepa-rated from You. Amen

On the First Saturday during 5 Consecutive Months, the Devotion consists of: 1. Going to Confession, 2. Receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, 3. Saying five decades of the Rosary, 4. Meditating for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary. All this offered in REPARATION for the sins of blasphemy and ingratitude committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
