From the Deacon’s Desk,

In the gospel Jesus encounters a blind man and Jesus cures his eyesight. He went from total darkness to seeing firsthand the incredible mystery of creation. However as the story unfolds the blindness of this man is more than physical blindness. He was also living in spiritual blindness, not related to sin, but faith and indeed faith is at the heart of our circum-stances today.

This coronavirus is wreaking havoc in my family. There are many members of my family who work in the medical profession and they have a scientific understanding of this virus, how it works and what it affects. Because of our ages, they are advising us to become re-cluses – stay at home, do not come into contact with people. A dark cloud is sitting over our heads and how do we respond with faith? You too are sitting under this same cloud in varying degrees and how do you respond with faith?

Indeed the whole of Lent is about faith, how we are called to live in the light of Jesus. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving form the basic “to do’s” within Lent. Prayer leads to hope, fasting strengthens our spirits, and almsgiving is the response. Each of these is needed for strengthening faith.

I do not know the answer as to the right way to live in light of this coronavirus for you. However, certainly the coronavirus has given us an opportunity to pray ever more earnestly for the safety of our health care workers, the elderly, the very young, and those living under the poorest of circumstances because they are at special risk. Fasting has taken on a new dimension slowing us down, driving less, eating good food and not wasting food, using good hygiene, and raising our awareness of God’s care for us. Almsgiving is a response to faith. Regardless whether things work out well for us or not, I know that God is with us and that leads us to share generously.

Last Sunday I received the gift of being able to help with the blood drive at St Nicholas. Thirty-seven people came in to give the gift of life. Despite the fears caused by this corona-virus they came in. Few of us ever think about giving blood until we are affected personal-ly. Yet every day accidents happen, deadly sicknesses occur, and the need is always pre-sent. Perhaps, especially under the cloud of the coronavirus the need is ever more urgent. Thank you for giving the gift of life!

In the gospel story the blind man grew in faith each time he was challenged by those who had little faith in Jesus. These challenges he faced are the crosses of faith. Easter is around the corner, April 12. This Lenten season has presented us with a unique opportuni-ty to grow in faith. Indeed with this coronavirus we are walking with Jesus on his way to the darkness of Calvary. The cross is our standard that guides us to Easter.

May God give you the strength to carry your crosses!

Deacon Jim

Diocese of Evansville 75th Anniversary 7th & 8th grade projects

7th project: Our 7th grade class has chosen to run/walk at least 75 miles during Lent and donate $1 for each mile to the Ronald McDonald House in Louisville. We all know that walking is good for your health. According to Harvard Health, regular walking can also help control sweet craving, de-crease your risk of breast cancer, help with joint pain, and improve immune function. The Ronald McDonald House in Louisville helped families from 15 different Indiana counties last year alone. They provide a place to stay for families of children receiving medical treatment in Louisville hospi-tals. They are in the process of expanding to help even more families. To track the miles, you may use the slips printed in the bulletin or in the back of church. If your family of 4 walks a mile together, then this will count as 4 miles. Invite others to participate and improve your health and contribute to a worthy cause during Lent! You may turn in slips and money in stewardship baskets on the week-end or turn them in Wednesday nights during class. 8th grade project: Our 8th grade class has chosen to raise at least $75 dollars to donate to Memo-rial Hospital Foundation to help purchase a new linear accelerator. This new technology will pro-vide more refined and detailed radiation beams to target cancer cells and leave surrounding tissues untouched. This will be a great technology addition to the area and help more patients receive the latest technology close to home. You may turn in money to Wednesday night class or put the mon-ey in the stewardship baskets.
