BREAKING OPEN THE WORD 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 5, 2020

Zechariah 9: 9-10

It seems that we have been witnessing and living conflict for far too long. We are beset with problems which challenge the greatest minds among us. But we can truly rejoice because we have a just savior who will proclaim peace. How can you take some time each day this week to rejoice and give thanks to our king?

Romans 8: 9, 11-13 We are so caught up in the small matters of daily living that we seldom stop to acknowledge that we are in the Spirit and that the Spirit of God dwells in each of us. What would happen if you were to pause this week and follow where the Spirit is leading?

Matthew 11: 25-30 How often does it seem, in these COVID days, that our lives are out of control? There are so many rules and regulations and new problems to consider. Here is the answer to this increasing complexity. Jesus is offering to ease our burdens. Will you accept His gift?

Be their constant companion and their strength in battle, their refuge in every adversity. Guide them, O Lord that they may return home in safety. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

ST. RAPHAEL CENTER HAPPENINGS (To sign up for any of the following events, please go to:

Registration: online www.straphaelacenter.org, email [email protected] or call us at 610-642-5715) Race in America: Virtual Book Club Tuesdays, June 23 ~ September 15, 2020, 8:00 to 9:00pm Facilitators: Lori Okema and Jared Epler. Join us for 13 weeks as we journey through the book “White Fragility: Why it’s so hard for white people to talk about racism” by Robin Diangelo. This group is a safe space to ask questions, to voice your thoughts, and to gain a deeper sense of what it means to be white and to be black in the United States in 2020. This space isn’t about being “called out;” this is a space to be “called in” to have an important, authentic, intentional conversation about race in America, and what we (as white people) can do better. Week 1 (June 23) we will share introductions and an overview. Weeks 2-13, we will discuss one chapter at a time. The cost of participating in this group is $20; 100% of the proceeds will go to the Equal Justice Initiative; a zoom link will be emailed after registration. Images of the Holy: An Evening Retreat Wednesday, July 1, 7:30 to 9:30pm Facilitator: Jaclyn Newns Join us for an evening of praying with your eyes. Photography can be a profound way to expand prayer through the spiritual practice of visio divina (divine seeing). This evening will introduce participants to the practice of visio divina and guide them through the process three times, with three different images. Add color and creativity to your prayer life as we experience “eyesight and insight” (Margaret Miles). Jackie will share 3 images, giving participants time to pray with each of them. Participants are asked to bring a journal with them to the retreat and email one meaningful photograph of their own to Jackie prior to the evening at [email protected]. The cost of participating in this retreat is $15; a zoom link will be emailed after registration. Prayer and Reflection for Health Care Providers in Light of the Pandemic Wednesday, July 15, 7:30 to 8:30pm. Facilitators: Christine Strickland, Family Nurse Practitioner, Esperanza Health Center. Theresa Ferrari, Spiritual Director and Nursing Professor, Immaculata University. Nicolas Collura, Spiritual Director and Hospital Chaplain. Bridget McGovern, Social Work Supervisor, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Jaclyn Newns, Spiritual Director and Director of Campus Ministry, Chestnut Hill College. Join us for an hour of pause. Ground yourself in community as we pray for the healing of our world. COVID-19 has affected so many in a deep, life-altering way, especially nurses, social workers, health care providers, grieving family members. There is a weariness that calls us to seek restoration through God’s companionship. This prayer service welcomes all; with a special invitation for those serving on the front lines, ministering to the physical care of the sick. The service will consist of readings, a guided meditation, intercessory prayer, and personal reflections. A zoom link will be emailed after registration. Cost: Free. Journeying through Grief and Healing: An Evening Retreat Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 7:30 to 9:30pm Facilitators: Jaclyn Newns and Nicholas Collura. There are many forms of loss that we experience and they are all significant - loss of a job, a relationship, a dream, a loved one - and all forms deserve loving attention and compassion. Join us for an evening of prayer, reflection, story-sharing and learning. Gain sacred perspective on grief as it can lead to internal transformation and spend time with yourself in a guided space to promote gentleness and reverence, hope and resilience. The cost of participating in this retreat is $20; a zoom link will be emailed after registration. ROSARY FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY- Every year the USCCB celebrates Religious Freedom Week. This past week, beginning on June 22, the feast of Saint Thomas Moore and St. John Fisher, “Religious Freedom Week“ was observed once again in our country. In keeping with this, we invite you to come and pray the “Patriotic Rosary” with us on Friday, July 3 at 7:30pm in front of the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue outside St. Andrew Church in Drexel Hill. We will pray and sing, thanking our Awesome Father for the freedoms we have been blessed with in America these many years. We will beg him for the continuation of these freedoms, especially of Religion and Speech. On this eve of our nation’s birthday, we hope you will join us in this one-hour fervent celebration of intercession and thanksgiving for our beloved USA!! Please bring a chair if you need one, and our rosary! Any questions, call Raphael 610-613-7481.
