We Need Your Help

In every family household, we all have jobs, responsibili-ties, or chores to do to keep things in order. We too, just like at home, need helpers to take care of a few tasks here at the church. We need someone to oversee the Care of the Altar Linens. This responsibility entails; + Scheduling weekly care of linens with other volunteers. + Making sure that linens are cleaned and prepared for daily and weekend liturgies. We also need someone to Care for the Plants in church.

This responsibility would include; +Watering plants 2-3 times a week. + Re-potting and care of plants when needed. Thank you for taking time to consider this invitation. If you are willing to help us, please contact Sandy Book at [email protected] or 815-474-4896, Thank you!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When I was growing up we lived within a mile of a railway station. The line was eventually closed only to be reopened many years later as a tramline for commuters. We also lived very near to a fruit farm which employed seasonal workers during the summer to pick fruit. It was hard and they really paid slave wages.

During the summer my mother would say let’s go and work for a day at the farm and see if we can raise a few pence to take the train out to Bray( a sea side town) tomorrow. We would gladly work with her for the day and at times eat loads of fruit with all the consequences. Sometimes our trip had to be postponed.

My mother would buy a certain loaf and make sandwiches as we took our trek to the sea and hoped that the fund would stretch to an ice cream or other goodies. I look back and celebrate the memories created. Times were tough and money was in short supply and yet with great imagination and ingenuity happy and wholesome memories were creat-ed.

We learned the values of working together and it was not handed to us on a plate.

This summer as you plan your time together try to do something that costs a little but creates memories of time together. Do a picnic in the park or along the river. Chase butterflies or fireflies. Grow a garden together or search for the sheep. Great memories are created in simple ways but above all spend time together to have fun and above all pray together. masstimes.org

Manna News

Manna cards are a simple way to bring in extra money for our parish. The manna cards are purchased at a discount and then sold at face value. The discount varies from ven-dor to vendor. If you buy a $25 card, it is worth $25 at the vendor. Therefore, the card costs you nothing extra. We all buy gas, groceries and go out to eat, so why not stop by the manna table and see what we have. We accept cash and checks payable to St. Francis Xavier.

Help Wanted We are looking for volunteers to join our friendly group of manna sellers. If you can stay after Mass an additional 15 to 20 minutes, we would love to have your help. Please call Marilyn #815-353-8736

FOCUS ON THE MISSION

“There are so many things to do.” “We have so little time.” How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniving, and worrying our way to “gratify[ing] the desires of the flesh,” as Paul relates in today’s second reading, are really non-productive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah’s chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his par-ents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later.
