PASTOR’S COLUMN Public Mass and Prayer Reopen on May 1, 2020 with 10-person limit and social distancing
Thanks. We give thanks to God and our Archbishop as we reopen Churches for Public Mass and Prayer on May 1. The Archbishop has directed us to abide by the Governor’s 10-person gathering limit and social distancing requirements. The Church will be sanitized regularly as we resume services.
Dispensation; Videotaping of Mass. The Dispensation from attending Sunday Mass remains in force until things normalize, i.e. there is no obligation to attend Sunday Mass for now. For those who do attend Mass, attending Weekday Mass fulfills the Sunday Mass obligation. The 8 am Masses Monday to Saturday will continue to be videotaped and uploaded on our Parish website. The 4 pm Saturday Vigil Mass will be videotaped and uploaded on our Parish website on Sunday morning.
Who Can Sign Up and How to Sign Up to Attend Mass? Due to the 10-person limit, only Registered Parishioners can sign up for Mass. Use the Sign-Up Link on our website or Call the Parish Office to sign up for Mass between 9 am and 2 pm on weekdays (834-0340). Leaving a phone message or sending an email does not count for sign-up until it is confirmed. Until the number of people allowed for public gatherings is increased, please sign up for only one mass every two weeks. Sign-Up begins on Thursday, April 30.
Mass Schedule (beginning Friday, May 1) 6:30 and 8:00 am Masses Monday through Friday; 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Masses on Saturday (Confessions, 3:00 – 3:45 PM Saturday); 8:00 am, 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm Masses on Sunday NOTE: The 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday, 6:30 am Mass on Tuesday and 8:00 am Mass on Wednesday are reserved for those 65 years of age or older
Social Distancing Requirements at Mass:
+Sanitizer and Masks. We will have hand sanitizer in Church but bring your own bottle of sanitizer to mass. Everyone must sanitize hands immediately before Communion. Parishioners must wear a mask while attending Mass except at Communion. The priests and deacons will wear a mask while distributing Communion.
+6 Foot Distancing. Sit 6 feet apart from others in Church and stand 6 feet apart in the Communion line, unless you are with family members.
+Communion in Hand. Communion will be given only in the hand. Open your hand; let the minister ‘drop’ the host into your hand; then close your hand to consume the host.
+No Physical Contact. The Sign of Peace may be a bow or nod but no physical contact. When Mass ends, please do not socialize in Church.
Eucharistic Adoration. Our Church already is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm for prayer. Beginning May 1, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the Main Altar in Church for Eucharistic Adoration from 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. There will be one committed adorer per hour. Text Dottie Watson at 504-339-4298 to sign up as a Committed Adorer; she will text you an assigned hour. Other adorers are welcome, but observe the 10-person limit and the social distancing requirements for Mass.
Our Hope. We are hopeful that we can expand the number of people attending Mass and relax some of the distancing requirements in the near future. In the meantime, thank you, Jesus!
GOD BLESS, FR. JOE

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION: WOW! Thanks to all the parishioners and school families who came out to adore Jesus and receive His blessing in last Sunday’s Eucharistic Driving Procession through St. Francis Parish. Fr. Thien and I enjoyed seeing so many of you along the 5-mile route. Chief thanks to Jesus, our Eucharistic Lord. Thanks also to the Men’s Club Board, devoted parishioners and Staff for organizing and staffing the event. Check out the procession photos on page 5 of the bulletin.
EASTER ART & WRITING CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Thanks again to all who entered the on-line Contest. Thanks to the Judges for selecting Winners based on the published crite-ria. The Winning works and artists are indicated below. Con-gratulations to all!
DRIVE-THROUGH TAKE-HOME DINNER THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday, May 3, our parish will host a Drive-Through Din-ner of Jambalaya and Gumbo for $5.00 a plate as a fundraiser for our Parish Food Bank. The KCs and Men’s Club will pre-pare 400 dinners. The men will wear masks, gloves and ob-serve social distancing as they prepare and package the meals. The Drive-Through Line will be on Betz Avenue be-hind the school beginning at 12 noon until sold out. Cash only. Thank you, Men of St. Francis.
MARY’S MONTH OF MAY May is the Month to honor Blessed Mother Mary, remember-ing her important role in salvation history and her role as a Prayer Intercessor. The Church encourages us to pray the Ro-sary often in May. We will crown the statue of Mary in our Pavilion on Friday evening, May 1. We would like to invite everyone to attend but social distancing requirements prohibit that. We will have some kind of receptacle below the statue of Mary if you wish to bring flowers to Mary over the week-end. We plan to film the recitation of the rosary by parishion-ers and put that on our website this week – to assist people in praying the rosary. We also will put a Rite of Crowning a statue of Mary on our website for anyone who wants to do this privately at home. Hail Mary, in your special month of May!

PRAYER FOR PROTECTION AND HEALING FROM CORONAVIRUS
(Adapted from prayer in America Magazine)
Lord Jesus, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick got well. Come to our aid in the midst of the global spread of coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.
Heal those who are sick with the virus; may they regain their strength and health. Heal us from fear, which prevents nations and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from pride, which makes us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.
Stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Bring those who have died from the virus to eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair, and give them peace.
Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and medical professionals who seek to help those affected and put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection.
Be with leaders of nations. Give them wisdom to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they serve; guide them to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks.
Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, be with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of anxiety, give us peace.
We pray this in your most holy name, Jesus, for You are our loving and healing Lord. Amen.
Our Lady of Prompt Succor, St. Joseph, St. Francis Xavier, St. Roch and St. Rosalie, pray for us!
SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
The Eucharist or Holy Communion is the Body of Je-sus. It is a source of great spiritual strength. The Church encourages the faithful to receive Holy Communion frequently, which ordinarily takes place at Mass. For the time being, that is not possible because of precau-tions being taken due to the coronavirus threat.
When we cannot receive Jesus in Holy Communion, we can still make an Act of “Spiritual Communion,” in which we express our faith in Jesus and in His Presence in the Eucharist, and we ask to unite ourselves to Him. The Lord grants graces and strength through this ac-tion. The key elements of Spiritual Communion are an Act of Faith, an Act of Love, a desire to receive Jesus, and an invitation to Him to come into our heart.
The following is a revered prayer of St. Alphonsus Liguori when making a spiritual communion:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
We hope you will consider praying this prayer regularly until public Mass is restored in our Church.
