The RCIA (Rite of

Christian Initiation

of Adults) is an

exploration of

Catholic teachings,

traditions, and

practices.

Participants attend

weekly sessions

beginning in the fall

each year. It is a

process whereby

adults become fully participating members of

the Catholic Church. Is there someone you

can invite to explore the Catholic faith –

someone unbaptized, or baptized in a non-

Catholic Christian tradition? Perhaps you

know a Catholic adult interested in being

confirmed. Please contact Fr. Rob at

[email protected] for more

information.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

For the greater glory of God...

Dear Parish Family,

Picking up from last week’s discussion on

confession, I’d like to talk about three things that

every Catholic should know about this beautiful

sacrament of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

The first is to always remember that it is Christ

who forgives you of your sins and not the priest.

Only God can forgive sin. The priest is His

instrument but the One who forgives you is truly

the Lord Jesus Himself. When the priest says, “I

absolve you of your sins…” it is Christ speaking

through the person of the priest. Christ gave the

apostles the authority to forgive sins after the

Resurrection when he said: “Receive the Holy

Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and

whose sins you retain are retained” (John 20:22-23).

Second, you should never let the fear of

forgetting how to go to confession prevent you

from going. If you don’t remember what to say

or do, I’ll be more than happy to walk you

through it when you’re there. There are even

“cheat-sheet” cards in the confessional to help

you! Also, you won’t need to memorize the “Act

of Contrition” because it is already there on a card

for you. Just come as you are and don’t worry

about memorizing all the steps.

Finally, every Catholic should be consoled by

what is called “the seal of confession.” This

means that the priest’s lips are completely locked.

What is said in confession stays there. There are

no circumstances whatsoever that a priest could

reveal another person’s confession. Some priests

have given up their lives as martyrs to protect the

seal of confession.

Peace and blessings,

Fr. Rob
