Saint Gabriel the Archangel Saddle River

“If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Si-rach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichev-er you choose, stretch forth your hand." This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus re-minds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfish-ness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testi-mony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Peace, Fr. Frank

MEET JEFF!

Jeff is a smiley joyful two-year-old orphan in Haiti. He is obsessed with wearing boots and is always seen jumping around in them. Jeff also loves to eat and sing! We are a group of students from Northern High-lands in Allendale New working on a global service project and are partnering with Chances For Children for our campaign for Jeff. Chances For Children is an organiza-tion that helps fight Haiti’s orphan epidemic. 80% of Haitians live in poverty, with over

75% of people having no access to clean water. Haiti has been the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere for over 20 years. Chances For Children provides food, clean drinking wa-ter, regular medical care, shelter, and education for all of the or-phans. Our mission is to raise money so that Jeff can have a good education, food on his plate and clothes on his back. On Sunday, February 23rd, we will be having a bake sale after the 8 am, 10 am, and 11:30 AM masses in the vestibule. We will have pastries, baked goods, and other items available for purchase, where all proceeds will be going to Chances For Children and to help make a significant impact on this little boy’s life. There will also be a donation bucket if you don’t want to purchase anything but still want to help contribute. Any kind of purchase or donation would be much appreciated!

LENTEN RELIGIOUS STUDIES PROGRAM: Bishop Robert Barron’s

Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues

Join us during this Lenten Season as we embark on Bishop Barron’s exploration of seven deadly sins, those great spiritual blocks that inhibit our flourishing in rela-tionship with God and one another and also learn how practicing countervailing virtues can break the cycle of sin. Pride, envy, an-

ger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust: these “seven deadly sins” are patterns of dysfunction that keep us separated from God and ulti-mately lead to unhappiness. Based on Dante’s writings, the sev-en deadly sins correspond to the seven stories of Dante’s Mt. Pur-gatory. Bishop Barron shows us how to counteract these seven sinful patterns through a conscious process of opposition, known as the “seven lively virtues." These offer antidotes to each sin and help set us on the right path to healing and happiness. This Len-ten Religious Study Program will be held at the Parish Center Meeting Room on Tuesday Mornings with Father Frank at 9:30 a.m., 2/18, 2/25, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, & 3/31 and on Monday & Wednesday Evenings with Christine Ferreri at 7:30 p.m., 2/17&19, 2/24 &26, 3/2 &4, 3/9 & 11, 3/16 & 18, 3/23 & 25, 3/30 & 31. All sessions during each week are the same, so you may attend any one that is convenient for you for that week. Look for the program sign-up flyer next weekend. Call the Par-ish Office at 201-327-5663 with any questions.
