Hear to Serve …

“THE COMPLETE OIL CHANGE” When I was a kid with a newly minted driver’s license, my main mode of transportation was a ’63 Rambler. Try-ing to be a responsible car owner, I

knew it was important to change my oil and filter on a regular basis. Well, this ’63 Rambler had the oil filter in a place that was so hard to reach. The fil-ter had been on the car so long before I got it that it just wouldn’t budge. It actually started to cave in when I tried to change the filter. So, I just changed the oil and not the filter.

Even though I attempted to do some good to help the car run better, I wasn’t doing everything I should have been doing. I wasn’t really receiving the full benefits of the oil change.

When I think of that old Rambler and its stubborn oil filter, I always think of the Sacrament of Confession or Reconciliation. As Catholics we be-lieve that we receive special graces by coming to Mass, receiving Holy Communion, or receiving the other Sacraments such as Confirmation, or Holy Matrimony. That is true, but if we are in the state of sin, and we don’t go to Confession, then we are not giving ourselves the “the complete oil change.” We still have that stubborn oil filter full of dirt and sludge contaminating the graces of the clean oil.

If our soul (which is the car engine), has this oil filter that is full of all this sludge (our sins) then we are not getting the full benefits of these Graces (clean oil) from Jesus. In fact, we are doing internal damage we can’t see.

I don’t know if it’s arrogance, fear, or em-barrassment that keeps most of us from going to Confession. We don’t need to take a poll to know that the number of people that go to the Sacra-ment of Confession is down drastically.

I urge you to do whatever it takes and go. If you have been away from the Sacrament for a number of years and forgotten how it works, have fears or questions, please contact me. I would be glad to help. (Don’t worry, you do not have to tell me your sins.) Reconciliation is not difficult. You can even take an instruction sheet with you in the confessional. Remember, our eternal life doesn’t depend on us memorizing or understanding all the facts, but it depends on the attitude of our hearts and minds. I was a twenty year man myself at one time, and it does take a lot to muster up the cour-age to go again. But I promise you, if you do go to Confession, you will not be disappointed.

Make 2021 the year that you give yourself all the advantages you need to spend eternal life in the presence of God. Give yourself the “Complete Oil Change.”

Deo Gratias, Deacon Gary

Eucharistic Bells During Mass SG is looking for volunteers to ring the church bells five minutes prior to the start of each Mass ‘calling the faithful to worship’ and again during the Eucharistic prayer as described above. The altar server will continue to ring the bells for all those present, but the ringing of the larger church bells makes the announcement to the community. The sound of bells does add to the reverence and the solemnity of the Mass. Most importantly, they highlight in a sensible way the sacred action taking place on the altar. Therefore, we have a tradi-tion that is not only practical but also beautiful. Can you help keep the tradition alive? The goal is to have bells rung at ALL Masses. Contact the parish office if you are willing to help with the ringing of the bells.

Thoughts for Today’s Readings To the Point: The magi arrive in Bethlehem intent upon finding the “newborn king of the Jews” who has been revealed to them by the light of the star. Upon encountering him with his mother, Mary, they are not content to only fall down in worship; they also desire to offer something tangible to the child. From their treasures they present him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In our own unique ways, we too have encountered the child of Bethlehem. We find him in the faces of those we hold dear, within the bread and wine of the Eucharist,

and within our very hearts. In what ways might we respond, both in homage and through gifts, to the revelation of Christ within our midst? Connecting the Gospel to Experience: While we find within the gospel and the epistle historical events in which Jews and Gentiles (signifying all the people of the world) are brought together by the light of Christ, we are still waiting for the fullness of Isaiah’s prophecy to take place in which the radiance of God’s peace will eradicate the darkness of violence, war, and blood-shed. As we wait for the fullness of God’s kingdom, we are invited to work for the peace and unity that God dreams for the world. 1. In all three of today’s readings we hear of different nations and different faiths coming together. How does your faith com-

munity reach out to those of different religions and different nationalities? 2. It was challenging for the early church to navigate the inclusion of both Gentile and Jewish followers of Christ. In your own

parish, what groups have difficulty interacting with each other? How might they enjoy greater unity? 3. The newborn king of the Jews is not found in the palace in Jerusalem but in a humble home in Bethlehem. How do you rec-

ognize Jesus in the poor and the vulnerable? 4. Upon encountering Jesus, the magi respond by offering him gifts from amongst their “treasures.” What treasures (either

material or spiritual) are you being called to place at the service of Christ?

What is a Home Blessing? After Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, the Holy Family was visited by three Magi from the east. They came to worship Christ and bring him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on the 12th Day of Christmas, January 6th, but in the United States it is moved to the Sunday between January 2nd-8th.

On Epiphany, it is traditional for families to bless their homes, remembering the hospitality of the Holy Family to the Wise Men and asking for protection and blessing on the home and all who enter. The home blessing is done by writing on the door or door frame or a plaque with chalk the symbols 20+C+M+B+21. The 20 and 21 represent the current year. The + reminds us of the cross on which our Savior died. The C, M, and B stand for the traditional names of the Wise Men, Caspar, Mel-choir, and Balthasar, as well as an abbreviation for the Latin phrase “Christus mansionem bene-dicat” which means “Christ bless this house.” Writing on the door also brings to mind the Passover of the Jews during the final plague in Exodus, when the blood of the lamb protected the inhabit-ants within. Supplies: Scripture for Epiphany (choose one): Chalk Isaiah 60:1-6 Bible Psalm 72 Ephesians 3:2-6 Matthew 2:1-12 Revelation 21:22-26 How to Bless Your Home • Make the Sign of the Cross • Read an Epiphany Scripture passage • Pray: “Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by

the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

• Chalk the door, door frame, or plaque with 20+C+M+B+21 • Pray the Our Father • Make the Sign of the Cross
