TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - OCTOBER 14, 2012

The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. - Hebrews 4:12a

GIFTS

In today’s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most.

Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God’s gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Forty-nine years ago Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council with these challenging words: “Our duty is not just to guard this treasure, as though it were some museum piece and we the curators, but . . . what is needed at the present time is a new enthusiasm, a new joy and serenity of mind.” As the participants in Vatican II proceeded with their deliberations, the first document they produced was the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, for they knew that it is from the liturgical life of the Church that everything else we do proceeds.

This seminal document, arrived at after much debate and approved virtually unanimously, set the tone for the entire Council to follow. It also set in motion the liturgical reforms that we are still implementing today. Perhaps no single phrase of the entire Vatican Council has had more influence on the life of the Church over the last half-century as the Constitution on the Liturgy’s ringing declaration that “full and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else.” —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

and deepen your personal relationship and friendship with Him. “I am come that you may have life, and have it more abundantly.” (Jn 10:10)

Your hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament will repair for evils of the world and bring about peace on earth.

"Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Jesus and be ready to make reparation for the great evils of the world. Let your adoration never cease." - Pope John Paul II, Dominiai Cenae

Prayer to God the Father of All Life

Eternal God, You have revealed Yourself as the Father of all Life. We praise You for the Fatherly care which You extend to all creation, and especially to us, made in Your image and likeness.

Father, extend Your hand of protection to those threatened by abortion, and save them from its destructive power. Give Your strength to all fathers, that they may never give in to the fears that may tempt them to facilitate abortions.

Bless our families and bless our land, that we may have the joy of welcoming and nurturing the life of which You are the source and the Eternal Father. Amen.

FIVE STEWARDSHIP KEYS FROM JESUS

At the Last Supper Jesus gave us important final messages: I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.

This I command you: love one another. (John 15:15-17). This simple message from Our Lord gives us five keys for living as good stewards:

1. Spend time with God 2. Realize God has chosen us 3. Contribute something for God 4. Trust in God’s abundance 5. Love and serve

Stewardship is not a gift we give to God, but rather a gift God gives to us.

October 7 & 14, 2012 contributions will

be reported in the October 21, 2010

bulletin.

Thank you for your support.

Attendance Counts!

Faith Formation plays an important role in the life of all Catholic families. It assists those enrolled by:

Helping family members understand themselves and their Catholic faith traditions.

Fostering an appreciation of the faith traditions of others.

Enabling family members to participate fully in the life of the Catholic community.

Encouraging a growing understanding of, and relationship with, Jesus.

Developing an appreciation of the love of God, the wonders of God’s creation and the dignity of the human person.

We look forward to seeing all of our families during weekly classes. If your child is not currently registered, please contact April Chatel in the parish office.

TO ALL THE FAITHFUL.... Excerpt from pastoral letter on the

occasion of the Year of Faith by: Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation,” Jesus said, ‘The man who believes in it and accepts baptism will be saved; the man who refuses to believe in it will be condemned” (Mk 16:15). What a difference it makes to believe in God. When faith is absent, the Lord’s work is hampered: “Jesus did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith” (Mt 13:58). When faith is active, it can move mountains, for nothing is impossible with God. Faith, which opens the door of our heart to Christ, is a great gift from Him, a free decision on our part, and a major force for shaping our individual lives and indeed the history of the world.

Boys and girls, ghouls and goblins, it’s time once again for St. Helen’s Peer Ministry 13th Annual Haunted House ! Come and jo in us on October 15th from 7-9 PM in the Teen Center as we begin our planning and construction! The Haunted House is just one way the youth in our parish give back each and every year. All donated food from the Haunted House goes toward stocking the St. Vincent de Paul Pantry for the holiday season. In order to make this year as great as every other, we need you! Make sure you bring your friends and frighteningly good ideas!

On Saturday, October 20 from 8:00AM to 12:00PM, we will be constructing the haunted house. This spooky transformation requires many hands (and lots of dads!) to help us put up the walls of the haunted house in the Teen Center basement. Bring your patience, creativity and dad if you can and we’ll bring the tools, food and fun!
