Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division encounter against our friends from Stockport Sports or Woodley Sports as they were the last time the two clubs met back in the 2003/04 season. It has been a while since we last convened here at Edge Green Street to take on Abbey Hey in the FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round and on that afternoon we were brought down to earth with a bump after winning the first two league games sinking to a 5-1 reverse. We then went on a long road trip as first we visited Barnoldswick Town where we failed to get going until three quarters of the way through the contest and found ourselves 3-0 down, goals from Mero Waugh and Alex Dunne looked to have given the visitors a lifeline before a goal in added on time from the hosts ended the comeback a secured a 4-2 win for one of the pre-season title favourites. We then took the short trip to Bootle, a ground where we have an awful record since the Bucks return to the top flight of the NWCL, having lost on every previous visit. Town took the lead through Lee Crompton before the hosts levelled prior to the break. Cole Ashton netted our goal of the season so far finding the top corner from the edge of the box before our seemingly annual penalty gift to the hosts saw them salvage a point. Finally Tuesday saw us visit Congleton and whilst we played well in spells we failed to threaten too much and a double salvo from Chris Smith saw the host claim the points. Onto this afternoons contest and we take on another of the pre-season favourites for the title in Stockport Sports. Much has been made of their full time status and international signings but they have struggled to adapt to the NWCL since winning on the opening day at Ashton Athletic. Ian and the lads will know they will need to be at their best this afternoon if we are to gain a return from this afternoons contest. The next match here sees us take on Ashton Athletic on Tuesday evening as long as our opponents do not draw in the FA Vase this afternoon. Talk of the Town . . .




In Town Today . . . The 2012/2013 season will mark a new chapter in the life of Woodley Sports FC. The club will undergo a complete makeover which will see them benefit from a full-time status, a new management team and even a new name. Stockport Sports FC will be

born and their first leader will be Aston Villa legend Peter Withe. The 60-year old has returned from life living down under in Australia to take up the position and attempt to lead Stockport back up the football pyramid, from their current position in the North West Counties Football League. It could be seen as something of a coup for the club to have attracted Withe – who represented England 11 times during the 1980’s and also won a European Cup with Aston Villa – but certainly proves that both club and manager have the same lofty ambitions. Withe (pictured above right) will not come to Stockport as a managerial novice though, having already experienced life in the managerial hot seats of Wimbledon (1991), Thailand (1998-2002) and Indonesia (2004-2007). It is with Stockport though that Withe will want to really make his mark as a manager, as he joins up with a brand new squad who are all hungry for success and want to be competing with rivals Stockport County in the near future.




. . . Stockport Sports Football Club The Club has collected a group of hungry young players who, with help from Withe, will be hoping to make their name at Stockport Sports. They will have the chance to do so on a full-time basis too, something which only a small amount of non-league clubs can boast. It gives local players who have fallen through the footballing net the chance to reignite their careers at Stockport, meaning promising individuals who may not get what they deserve at a club can still have the chance to make themselves a star at The Saxons. Another change the club will foresee is the changing of the Club’s nickname. Woodley Sports were affectionately known as “The Steelmen” but the new regime will see the Club being referred to as The Saxons. The nickname pays homage to the rich Saxon heritage of Stockport and pays tribute to those who named the town in the 18th Century. Despite all the changes perhaps overwhelming some, Stockport Sports will not neglect the community in its bid to become a major non-league side in the future. The Neil Rourke Stadium will boast a gymnasium which will be open for the public to use and the Stockport Sports Trust are also investing significant amounts of money to bring more full size and 5-a-side pitches to the community of Stockport in the hope that Stockport Sports can become a source of pride for a local community, as well as a blossoming football club. When the season starts in August, paying fans and members of the public will get to see first-hand the work that has been put in by many to set up Stockport Sports FC and the benefits it will bring to the community. To have a full-time football club at this level in the football pyramid is genuinely impressive and Peter Withe coming in as manager is another remarkable achievement for a forward-thinking Club. It will not be long before people are talking about the work Stockport Sports FC are doing both on and off the field and the rewards will soon outweigh the risks significantly. A Word from the Dugout . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for today's game against Stockport Sports FC . It seems a long time ago since our last home league game against AFC Liverpool. Today is only our second home game of the season. Three away games on the run against Barnoldswick Town, Bootle and Congleton Town all tough games against sides who finished in the top 10 last season has seen us only picking up 1 point which was our 2-2 draw at Bootle. We have took a lot of positives from each of the games the lads work rate and attitude has be spot on in every game we just need to stop conceding silly goals this is something we have been working extra hard on in training. Another positive is that we are competing well

against every side we play we don't look out of our depth but we will need the same attitude and commitment today if we are to take anything from the game . Today's opponents SSFC will be no push over I expect a really tough game against a side managed by European Cup winner Peter Withe and his assistant European Golden Boot winner Gary Bennett two former professionals who have played at the highest levels of the game and achieved so much in there careers. I know Gary personally and it will be nice to have a pint and a chat after the game. Stockport are a lot of people's favourites to win the league this season and I know Chairman John Hindley has some fantastic plans for the club I wish them all the best for the season apart from when they play against us of course . A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with Stockport Sports FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. After three successive away league fixtures we make a return to Ashton and having opened the season with two league wins it’s proved a little more difficult on the road. We’ve only claimed a point from the three games at Barnoldswick Town, Bootle and Congleton Town - with mixed performances against good sides. Barlick saw the lads fail to get started until the final 15 minutes; Bootle we played really well and only for a ‘generous’ penalty to deny us a fully deserved three points but had to settle for a share of the spoils. Last Tuesday at Congleton was another battling performance - the home side had quite a few chances in the opening half none of which hit the target and the second period saw Andy Mawdsley rattle the post before a break away goal put the Bears in front despite what appeared to be a blatant off-side. The home side confirmed their victory with a second from the penalty spot which probably should have seen the Town man dismissed for deliberate hand ball - another odd, but welcome decision from the officials. Another late rally after a change in formation saw Matt Conkie in the Congleton goal make a number of smart saves but once again it was too little, too late. Today’s visitors have re-joined the NWCFL this season having been demoted (as Woodley Sports) from the Evostick League at the end of last season. There’s been plenty of action at the club over the summer period and the installation of Peter Withe as manager and the addition of a whole host of new players both from home and abroad had seen them promoted to championship favourites before a ball was kicked. As we all know it doesn’t work like that and Stockport Sports have had a mixed bag of results with the competition proving as tough as ever. Tuesday evening at Congleton saw our first 500+ Club draw and the £250 prize pot went to Stephen Edwards 083 (£150), Brad Wilkie 123 (£75) and D Clayton 400 (£25). Congratulations to all the winners and the next draw will take place at the end of September - anyone wishing to join please see a member of the committee for details. Next up for Town sees a trio of former Town players and staff return to the club with Ashton Athletic next Tuesday evening - Ian Street and Jimmy McBride have recently been joined by coach Terry Hoey. A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that

league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

St Helens Town AFC Managers . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side

sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured left) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the

club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006

-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley (pictured left) steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season sees Jimmy McBride makes a return to Town following a brief spell in the Cheshire League with Billinge FC but it proved a

difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite is appointed following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC.

St Helens Town Youth Team . . . The aim of the North West Youth Alliance is to assist its members produce better players as part of their Youth Development Programmes. The NWYA does this by providing high quality competition between the under 18s teams of League and non-League clubs. The Competition is registered under the Lancashire FA, and also includes teams affiliated to Derbyshire, Liverpool, Manchester, Cheshire and The FA. The 2012-13 season comprises of three Divisions - ’The Premier League’, and two comparable leagues - ‘La Liga’ and ‘Bundesliga’. St Helens Town Youth have been

placed in ‘La Liga’ and will play their homes fixtures at Bobbies Lane, Eccleston.

The Reserves started their St Helens Combination Premier Division with a good 2-1 victory over former champions Knowsley South FC. Ste Powell getting both Town goals, the first from inside his own half before the visitors reduced the arrears late in the first half. Town had plenty of second half chances but almost paid the price when South missed a great opportunity when failing to hit the target from inside the six yard box.

When St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town have met Manchester City on four occasions. Strictly speaking, the clubs have only met twice, the first two occasions, soon after the transfer of Bert Trautmann, City faced teams of St. Helens-born players, drawn mostly from other Football League clubs. Both those games were played at the old Town ground at Hoghton Road, in April 1950 and again in May 1951. The other games were much later, a pre-season friendly, again at Hoghton Road in July 1996 and, more recently, at the athletics stadium adjacent to the Etihad Stadium, in November 2009, that game coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Bert’s transfer, when the clubs met to play for the Trautmann Trophy. Programmes for all four games are shown. Facsimile copies of the first two programmes were produced and given away free with the 1996 programme and the 2009 programme – produced by Town – included a facsimile copy of the programme for Trautmann’s final Town appearance, against Bangor City on 1st October

1949 in the FA Cup. The game in April 1950 was arranged as a “thank you” from City for Bert’s transfer and produced a ground record attendance of 4000 which still stands today, although the record for a Town match is 3102 for a Liverpool County Combination game against Burscough on 9th October 1948, when Trautmann played in goal. He was a former German prisoner of war, who stayed on after the Second World War and his debut for Town came in the opening match of that season, against South Liverpool, at Hoghton Road, on 28th August 1948. Bert went on to greater fame at Maine Road, playing twice for City at Wembley in FA Cup Finals, in 1955 on the losing side against Newcastle United and returning to win the Cup the following year

against Birmingham City, in a game in which he broke his neck but played on nevertheless. He enjoyed a career lasting 15 seasons at City, also representing the Football League on two occasions. Alive and well and living these days in Spain, he’ll celebrate his 90th birthday next year. The 27th April 1950 programme was an eight-page publication, double the usual number of pages for a Town issue and the first held together by staples. There was an article by Jack Phillips (who had been Secretary of the original Town club, which was formed in 1901 and lasted until 1928) and another by then-Secretary George Fryer in which he outlined the club’s ambitions




. . . met Manchester City of election to the Football League. At that time, Town were nearing the end of their third season – their first in the Lancashire Combination – and the sky was the limit following a quite spectacular run of success at the new Hoghton Road ground. It was back to four pages for the clash on 2nd May 1951 and the programme notes encouraged spectators to return the following evening for the match against Lancaster City, promising to present further football occasions of similar stature should the St. Helens public respond to the club’s ambitious aims. Town were promoted as Second Division champions in 1951, but their high expectations wee dampened the following season, finishing bottom of the First Division in 1951/52. Put into perspective, however, the Lancashire Combination was among the strongest leagues in those days, possibly the equivalent of the Blue

Square leagues of today, featuring clubs such as Wigan Athletic and Morecambe among their numbers. The programme for the pre-season friendly against City’s reserve team on 24th July 1996 was a full-sized Town issue, comprising 36 pages. Programme editor in those days was current club chairman, John McKiernan, and there was a wonderful account by Jim Barratt, now Town’s President, of his meeting with Bert Trautmann a few years earlier when he had conducted Bert in a nostalgic tour around the district. The team line-ups on that day 16 years ago included the ever-youthful Brian Hatton, as well as Gary Bickerstaffe and Adie Reilly.

A team of City legends entertained Town at the Regional Athletics Arena on Sunday, 15th November 2009, for the Trautmann Trophy and an enthusiastic gathering of just under 400 saw an entertaining game settled at 6-5 in favour of Town, the last occasion Town lifted a trophy. The programme was produced by St. Helens Town, but featured articles by various contributors at City and Maine Road FC, who still have close links with the reigning Barclays Premier League Champions. St Helens Town v Bootle . . . Tuesday 21st August 2012 North West Counties League, Premier Division Bootle 2-2 St Helens Town 0-1; Lee Crompton 24 Minutes, 1-1; Jamie Hay 37 Minutes, 1-2; Cole Ashton 53 Minutes, 2-2; Lee Thompson (Penalty) 67 Minutes. Town bounced back from two consecutive defeats to gain a point at league leaders Bootle but it could and probably should have been more. The hosts proved their league position in the opening quarter of the contest and carved out a couple of decent openings, the first attack saw two former Town players link as Liam Blakeman did well down the right wing before centring towards Lee Thompson who appeared to control the ball with his hand but play was allowed to continue and his effort was met with a fine save by Dale Newbrook in the Town goal. Thompson was soon involved again as he latched onto a poor pass out of defence and his effort from 25 yards out was claimed by Newbrook at the second attempt. As the half wore on the visitors started to threaten more and Carl Osman and Ash Rimmer were starting to cause the hosts problem, the latter had a cross come shot which went just over the bar from the left wing and after a foray forward by Osman was stopped by foul means Rimmer delivered the free kick into the area and Dave Standley glanced the ball onwards where it was collected by Lee Crompton and he made no mistake firing the ball home to break the deadlock and see Bootle concede their first league goal of the season. Further pressure from Town saw Cole Ashton win the ball in midfield and he linked with Ste Edwards whose effort was deflected wide of the target. Rimmer was the next to profit from a slack pass as he collected a loose ball and advanced down the left wing his cross broke to Ashton on the edge of the area but his effort was turned around the upright by a defender. Parity was restored on 37 minutes when after poor

Match Report and Photos communication saw the visitors gift the home side a corner the mistake was punished as Neil Prince delivered the set piece to the far post where Jamie Hay was on hand to apply the finish and the sides went in level at the break. The visitors started the second half quickly and had regained their lead less than 10 minutes after the restart. Brian Hatton saw his free kick from the edge of the area deflected behind for a corner and from the resultant dead ball the centre was only cleared to Ashton on the edge of the box and he returned it with interest beating a defender before curling an effort into the top right hand corner of the net. Just after the hour mark Osman advanced down the right wing and at the edge of the box he turned the ball into the danger area and the ball was cleared to the edge of the box where Scott McNair collected it and shot just over the crossbar. Further pressure saw McNair get down the right and centre the ball was collected by Edwards and his turn and shot went inches wide of the right hand post and moments later a counter attack from the hosts saw them awarded a contentious penalty after a challenge just inside the penalty area. Thompson picked himself up to convert the spot kick and this was to be the last goal of the contest leaving Town musing what could have been at a venue which has not been kind to them over recent years.

North West Counties Club News . . . Over recent years, The Football Association have been promoting the Respect campaign visibly both on and off the field, with the aim being to reduce the dissent and foul and abusive language that is used during football matches. As part of this process, a new automatic charge has been implemented which will affect all teams at at Steps 5, 6 & 7 for the forthcoming season. An automatic charge will be raised by the County should a team receive 10 or more yellow/red cards in a season for Dissent or Foul & Abusive language. Further charges will be raised on 15/20/25 sanctions. The table below provides further details on the sanction that will be imposed if the thresholds are exceeded by a team throughout the season. To clarify, the only discipline that counts towards the charges are yellow cards for Dissent and red cards for Foul

and Abusive Language.

The NWCFL Management Committee is fully behind the FA campaign, and League Secretary John Deal says that the committee will be firm in dealing with any offenders in our League. “We would like to reaffirm that we will be carefully monitoring any reports we receive regarding clubs who are clearly not adhering to the standards laid down by the Respect campaign. I am sorry to have to report that already this season, we have had three clubs appear before the League’s Emergency Committee with regard to their conduct, and we will be equally firm in dealing with any other offenders”.

Visitors to AFC Darwen's Anchor Ground will notice a few changes on arriving at the front gate for future games. Following refurbishment of the clubhouse and balcony over the summer, work has now begun on the entrance to the ground, including the installation of new turnstiles. Work began last Thursday, and will involve the existing access area at the front of the ground being pulled down and a new front being built. The old single turnstile will be taken away and replaced with a double turnstile, and it’s anticipated that the building work will take around two weeks to complete. The story behind the new turnstile is an interesting

one, as AFC Darwen webmaster Steve McKelvey explained. “The new double turnstile being installed has been brought from Brighton & Hove Albion’s new ground, the American Express Community Stadium. When I was at our game against Northwich Villa last week at Flixton, I saw a turnstile there and asked one of the officials there if they used it. He said they did, but he gave me the details for a gentleman who could supply one and it just went from there. It turned out the firm he put me in touch with buys used ones from Football League clubs when they upgrade their turnstiles, and there was one available from Brighton. We got a local company who deals in nationwide pickups to collect the turnstile for us. It needed lifting by a small grabber and placed on the trailer, which did cost us extra. The driver travelled through the night, arrived in Brighton at 5am last Wednesday morning, had a break as required before he loaded up and set off back, and the turnstile was there at the ground when the work started on Thursday morning. Once the position of the new double turnstile has been decided, the building work will then be carried out around it, and the same with the gates. The front of the ground will still have the same elements, but the gates and turnstile will be in different positions and look more attractive to the eye”.

North West Counties Club News . . . Alan Farnworth – The League Vice-President is once again getting acquainted with hospital food, as he is back for another course of treatment in the Royal Bolton Hospital. As ever, Farny has his mobile with him, and he’ll be grateful to hear from anyone who can keep him up to date with events around the league. Wigan Robin Park – this season, the Robins’ spectators will be picking a man of the match award. Committee members Paul and Margaret Wood have donated a set of medals, and one of each will be given out in the bar after each game. The first winner was defender Dougie Pitts in the opening game of the season against Maine Road, and he was nominated by former Rochdale Town stalwart Jim Picken, who was at the game with his family. Runcorn Town – reserve team player Jordan Dwyer created a bit of history last week when he became Town’s first ever “rolling sub” in the Cheshire League. The League has this season adopted rolling substitutes as part of a two year trial by

FIFA. The idea is that when a player comes off, he then becomes a substitute himself and can rejoin the action again later on. Jordan has the distinction of being the first ever Town player used as a rolling sub, after he was substituted with 25 minutes to go but then came back on for the last ten minutes. Leek CSOB – this season will be the last that the Old Boys host home games at Harrison Park. The ground sharing arrangement with Leek Town will end next April and the club will make a new start at a new home in Cheddleton, just outside Leek. More details about the move will be released during the course of the season. Ashton Athletic - after recently advertising for a first team coach, the club have now appointed Terry Hoey to the position. Terry played for St Helens Town in the mid 90's with current Athletic manager Ian Street and under current assistant manager Jimmy McBride, and has been recently coaching local teams around the St Helens and Wigan area. Player movements - in response to some enquiries, the reports on player movements and registrations will be published from the first Friday in September. The registration forms have been flowing in thick and fast to Registrations Secretary John Cowley over the past few weeks, but hopefully by the end of this week the 'beginning of season rush' will be over.
