BLESSED When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes oc-cur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evange-lists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Je-sus throughout the Gospels. BIENAVENTURADOS O DICHOSOS Cuando pensamos en la palabra “bienaventuranza” pensamos en el discurso de hoy del Evangelio según Lucas, o en el más familiar según Mateo (que comienza “Dichosos lo que tienen espíritu de pobre . . .”). En realidad, las bienaventuranzas ocurren en los profetas y evangelios. Hoy, en Jeremías (con un eco en el sal-mo) oímos: “Bendito el hombre que confía en el Se-ñor” (Jeremías 17:7). Luego de su resurrección en el Evangelio de san Juan, Cristo proclama: “¡Dichosos los que creen sin haber visto!” (Juan 20:29). Los evange-listas colocaron estos dichos por todos los evangelios como cortos recordatorios sobre las caracteríscas de quien sigue a Cristo, características que ayudarán a diseminar la Buena Nueva en esta vida y llevarnos a la dicha eterna en la próxima. En latín, los santos son llamados Beati o “Beatos” porque son aquellos que vi-ven la vida “feliz” descrita por Jesús en los evangelios. ¡Qué dichosos somos cuando nos esforzamos por hacer de nuestros días bienaventuranzas vivas! Después de recibir las peticiones de los feligreses, este pasado Adviento y en las temporadas de Navidad, di permiso para algu-nas de las partes ordinarias de la Misa (Santo, Santo, Santo/el Misterio de la Fe/Cordero de Dios) para ser cantado en latín en la Misa del sábado 4:00PM y sólo en esa Misa. Durante el pastorado del Mons. Torres, se volvió una práctica el cantar las partes comu-nes de la Misa en la lengua oficial de la Iglesia Católica Romana durante las temporadas de Adviento y Cuaresma. Esta prác-tica continuará en la Misa del Sábado por la tarde duran-te esas dos temporadas Litúrgicas. La Cuaresma comienza en pocas semanas. ¡¿Algunos podrían estar confundidos y decir “pero el Vaticano II se libró del latín?!". Muchas personas honestamente piensan esto porque eso es lo que se les ha dicho. Supongo que podríamos lla-marlo "noticias falsas". La verdad es que el Vaticano II no hizo tal cosa. Lo único que hay que hacer es leer los documentos reales del Concilio Vaticano II. En la Constitución del Consejo sobre la sa-grada liturgia Sacrosanctum Concilium, leemos “El uso de la lengua latina, con el debido respeto a la ley particular, debe ser preservado en los ritos latinos. Pero dado que el uso de la verná-cula ya sea en la Misa, la administración de los sacramentos, o en otras partes de la liturgia, puede ser con frecuencia de gran ventaja para el pueblo, un uso más amplio se puede hacer de esto, especialmente en las lecturas, directivas y en algunas ora-ciones y cantos” (párrafo 36). Vemos entonces que la Iglesia nun-ca tuvo la intención de eliminar completamente el Latín de la Mi-sa. La intención del Vaticano II, que se detalla en la cita anterior, era la de principalmente hacer las lecturas en el idioma del pue-blo, mientras que la mayor parte del resto de la liturgia permane-cería en Latín. Sin embargo, todos sabemos que esto no es lo que realmente sucedió. En cambio, el Latín ha desaparecido casi total-mente. La mayoría de los obispos y sacerdotes se tomaron sobre sí mismos para ir mucho más allá de las reformas del Concilio en casi todas las áreas de la liturgia, desde el lenguaje, la música y la reverencia. El resultado es que la Misa como se celebra en la ma-yoría de las parroquias católicas tiene poco parecido con la "Misa del Vaticano II". ¿Por qué el Latín entonces? El Latín era la lengua del Imperio Romano en el momento que el cristianismo comenzó a extenderse rápidamente durante sus primeros siglos. San Pedro, el primer Papa, fue el primer Obispo de Roma y fue martirizado y enterrado allí. Desde entonces, la iglesia ha sido gobernada desde la ciudad de Pedro en Roma. Por lo tanto, el nombre católicos romanos. Desde los primeros siglos, la liturgia se celebraba gra-dualmente cada vez más en Latín hasta convertirse en la norma del Rito Romano. En una Iglesia que existía en casi todos los paí-ses de la tierra, se consideraba un signo de unidad para orar en un idioma común. Más allá de la Misa, el Latín era y sigue siendo el idioma oficial de la Iglesia Católica Romana. No da lugar a celos. No favorece a nin-guna nación, sino que se presenta con la misma imparcialidad a todos y es igualmente aceptable para todos ". Finalmente, el libro de reglas de la Misa, la Instrucción General del Misal Romano afirma: "Dado que los fieles de diferentes paí-ses se unen cada vez con más frecuencia, es deseable que sepan cantar juntos al menos algunas partes del Ordinario de la Misa en Latín "(párrafo 41). En una parroquia como la de San Henry que habla dos idiomas, sería beneficioso seguir esta instrucción de la Santa Madre Iglesia en las celebraciones principales donde las comunidades de habla inglesa y el hablar español se unan. Para esos pocos momentos, todos podríamos estar unidos en orar jun-tos el mismo idioma.

WHAT’S WITH LATIN? After receiving requests from parishioners, this past Advent and Christmas seasons, I gave permission for some of the Or-dinary parts of the Mass (Holy, Holy, Holy/Mystery of Faith/Lamb of God) to be chanted in Latin at the 4:00pm Saturday Mass and only at that Mass. During the pastorate of Msgr. Torres, it became the practice to chant those common parts of the Mass in the official language of the Roman Catholic Church during the seasons of Advent and Lent. This prac-tice will continue at the Saturday evening Mass dur-ing those two liturgical seasons. Lent begins in a few weeks. Some might be confused and say, “but Vatican II got rid of Latin?!”. Many people honestly think that because that is what they have been told. I guess we could call that “fake news”. The truth is that Vatican II did no such thing. All one has to do is read the actual documents of the Second Vatican Council. In the Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacro sanc-tum Concilium, we read “The use of the Latin language, with due respect to particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites. But since the use of the vernacular, whether in the Mass, the administration of the sacraments, or in other parts of the liturgy, may frequently be of great advantage to the people, a wider use may be made of it, especially in readings, directives and in some prayers and chants” (paragraph 36). We see then that the Church never intended to eliminate Latin completely from the Mass. The intent of Vatican II, spelled out in the quote above, was to principally make the Readings in the language of the people while most of the rest of the liturgy would remain in Latin. However, we all know that this is not what actually happened. Instead, Latin has almost totally dis-appeared. Most bishops and priests took it upon themselves to go far beyond the reforms of the Council in almost every area of the liturgy from language, to music, and reverence. The result being that the Mass as it is celebrated in most Catholic parishes bears little resemblance to the “Mass of Vatican II”. Why Latin though? Latin was the language of the Roman Em-pire at the time that Christianity began to spread rapidly du-ring its early centuries. St. Peter, the first pope, was the first Bishop of Rome and was martyred and buried there. Since then, the Church has been governed from the See of Peter in Rome. Hence, the name Roman Catholics. From the earliest centuries, the liturgy was gradually celebrated more and more in Latin until it became the norm in the Roman Rite. In a Church that existed in almost every country on earth, it was considered a sign of unity to pray in one common language. Beyond the Mass, Latin was and remains the official language of the Roman Catholic Church. All her rituals, all the letters and decrees of the Popes are first published in Latin and then translated. Pope St. John XXIII (who convened Vatican II) wrote a document on the promotion of the study of Latin in which he wrote, “Of its very nature Latin is most suitable for promoting every form of culture among peoples. It gives rise to no jealousies. It does not favor any one nation but presents itself with equal impartiality to all and is equally acceptable to all.” Finally, the rule book of the Mass, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal states, “Since the faithful from different countries come together ever more frequently, it is desirable that they know how to sing together at least some parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin” (paragraph 41). In a Parish like St. Henry’s that speaks two languages, it would be beneficial to follow this instruction of Holy Mother Church at major cel-ebrations where the English speaking and Spanish speaking communities come together. For those few moments, we could all be united in praying together the same language.

He studied Philosophy at St. Joseph Seminary Col-lege in St. Benedict, La, graduating in 2009.

He studied Theology and received a Master of Divin-ity from Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales Corner, Wisconsin in 2014.

Ordained to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ for the Diocese of Lafayette on June 21, 2014.
