October 14th, 2012 — 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Fr. Paul’s Ponderings
RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP...
The Gospel this weekend points to radical discipleship. Jesus tells the man who runs up to him to go and sell what he
has and give it to the poor and then follow him. The man cannot do it, and so he walks away. The disciples are
astounded at the turn of events. None of them have any great wealth, but they wonder if anyone can be saved. One of my
favorite Saints, St. Francis of Assisi (whose feast we celebrated this past week) took this Gospel in a quite literal sense,
and so ended up disposing of everything. Clearly we are not all meant to be St. Francis. But his radical interpretation
reminds us that we can cling too closely to all that we have and lose sight of the greater meaning in our lives. Since all
that we have is already a gift from God, we recognize that these things are only ours for a brief time before we are called
to give an accounting in the age to come.
YEAR OF FAITH 2012 – 2013
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic
Church, Pope Benedict XVI has announced a Year of Faith, starting October 11, 2012 and ending November 24, 2013.
The chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis of the USCCB, Bishop Ricken, offers ten ways Cath-
olics can live the Year of Faith.
Participate in Mass: The year of Faith is meant to promote the personal encounter with Jesus. This occurs most
immediately in the Eucharist. Regular Mass attendance strengthens one’s faith through the Scriptures, the Creed, oth-
er prayers, sacred music, the homily, receiving Communion and being part of a faith community.
Go to Confession: Like going to Mass, Catholics find strength and grow deeper in their faith through participation in
the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Confession urges people to turn back to God, express sorrow for falling
short and open their lives to the power of God’s healing grace. It forgives the injuries of the past and provides strength
for the future.
Learn about the lives of the Saints: The Saints are timeless examples of how to live a Christian life, and they provide
endless hope. Not only were they sinners who kept trying to grow closer to God, but they also exemplify ways a person
can serve God through teaching, missionary work, charity, prayer and simply striving to please God in the ordinary
actions and decisions of daily life.
Read the Bible daily: Scripture offers first-hand access to the Word of God and tells the story of human salvation.
Catholics can pray the Scriptures (through lectio divina or other methods) to become more attuned to the Word of God.
Either way, the Bible is a must for growth in the Year of Faith.
Read the documents of Vatican II: The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) ushered in a great renewal of the Church.
It impacted how Mass is celebrated, the role of the laity, how the Church understands itself and its relationship with oth-
er Christians and non-Christians. To continue this renewal, Catholics must understand what the Council taught and how
it enriches the lives of believers.
(To be continued next week)
Have a faith-filled week!

THE YEAR OF FAITH HAS BEGUN!
Pope Benedict XVI has designated that a “Year of Faith,” which we are celebrating
from October 11th, 2012 until November 24th, 2013. The beginning of the year also
marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th
anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
THE FOUR-FOLD PRESENCE OF CHRIST
“Christ is always present in his Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations. He is
present in the Sacrifice of the Mass not only in the person of his minister, “the same now offering, through the
ministry of priests, who formerly offered himself on the cross,” but especially in the Eucharistic species. By
his power he is present in the sacraments so that when anybody baptizes it is really Christ himself who baptiz-
es. He is present in his word since it is he himself who speaks when the holy scriptures are read in the Church.
Lastly, he is present when the Church prays and sings, for he has promised “where two or three are gathered
together in my name there I am in the midst of them.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 7)
REFLECTION
How do I experience the four-fold presence of Christ at Sunday Mass?
PRAYER
O God, who has accomplished the work of our redemption through the Paschal Mystery of your Son Jesus
Christ, grant that we who proclaim the Death and Resurrection of the Lord under sacramental signs may
experience your presence and grace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
STEWARDSHIP: SHARE YOUR TIME AND TALENT!
As Christians, we recognize that our gifts of talents and skills are meant to be cultivated and shared with
others, beginning with our family and friends, with those whom we gather to share the Eucharist, and with the
world. The gift of ourselves blesses the particular community of Christians we are involved with and blesses
those whom our parish hopes to touch.
Christ has called us to use our gifts “to love and serve the Lord” — to be sent forth. Sharing our God-given
gifts by actively participating in the life of our parish communion is an expression of stewardship. Christians
contribute their talents in whatever way they can. A commitment to stewardship motivates us to use our gifts
to serve our community of faith. If we are going to love and serve God’s people and thus God, a particular
place and specific group of people help assure us that such service is real and responsible.
In our parish there are numerous ways to get involved! These include altar flowers, gardening/landscaping,
painting, repairs, visiting the sick, preparing meals, volunteering in the office, assisting with fundraising,
teaching religious education, and much more! Please share your time and talent for the benefit of all!
For further information on the Year of Faith, please visit www.aod.org/yearoffaith, where you can print off
prayer cards, see events for the year, and find links to other resources.
