MASS TIMES

ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm.

Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am

“A new teaching—with authority!” What did it

mean for those in the synagogue who described

Jesus’ teaching with this way? And right here, in

this moment, what does it mean to speak “with

authority”?

The authority of Jesus’ teaching refers to the power and dignity with

which he speaks. It is a power beyond his right to teach in the

synagogue. It acknowledges his personal call to offer a “new teaching”.

Jesus bravely enters into his God-granted authority: he exerts power

over unclean spirits and heals on the Sabbath. Jesus clearly has a sense

of authority. He knows who he is and what he is about, and his listeners

are amazed. They ask, “What is this?”

We also ask, “What is this?” We hear Moses’ advice about heeding the

words of God’s prophets, and consider our own call to be a prophet. The

psalmist encourages us to keep our hearts soft and open to God’s word.

Paul would be delighted if we all claimed our God-granted power and

dignity to live the life to which we have been called. In doing so, we

would discover our own authority.

When Jesus spoke in the synagogue it was new and it was with authority.

Today, Jesus speaks to us in Word and Sacrament. It is still new and he is

still with authority. We are blessed.

Brenda Hildebrand.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

‘IF YOU WANT TO SERVE THE AGE, BETRAY IT.’

What does that mean—to betray the age? Well, to me, it means

exposing its conceits, its foibles, its phony moral certitudes.

It means telling the secrets of the age and facing harsher truths.

Every age has its massive moral blind spots. We might not see

them, but our children will … What are the ideas right now worth

betraying? What are the lies we tell ourselves now? What are the

blind spots of our age? … It might be something as simple as our

deep down refusal to believe that every human life has equal

worth.

Brenda Kennnelly.
